Describe the requirements and functionality and perks of your theoretical favorite net forum, within legal limits that is. (i.e. keeping in mind that mp3 linking may not be available as a feature.)

How would it differ from ILX, LJ, MySpace, 43places, etc.?

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I would like a forum with a theme that makes it look like an Excel spreadsheet for workplace camouflage.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Wahtever I like to post it doesn't.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

An 'Anything Goes' off-topic board, where literally anything goes and nothing is ever moderated.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

I LOVE COMICS

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

tags system to posts, instead of boards (i.e. boards but a thread can belong to multiple), like gmail. plus a decent search engine.

basically like gmail, but multiuser.

Louis Jagger:
we tried this. twice. and one turned into the brooklyn bros pickles bored and the other one got blowed up by the admin because the folks who posted to it forgot they had no right to complain.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

www.apug.org or www.rangefinderforum.org with a few modifications (no avatars, mostly).

Just as easy to read as ILX, a space for members to pay for upkeep by purchasing a small amount of space to store their vanity photos and dancing Alizees, code that seems generally to work well without excessive re-writing by our admins.

I'm not sure how server demands differ, though.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

One thing ILX got totally right: No avatars, smileys and Monty Python quotes clogging up every post.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't played with it much, but RForum is nice and simple and clean.

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

Tombot, was that the 'I Don't Mind Everything' board?

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

it was the aja/dante hostile javascript board, grasshopper.

heavyweight grebt (sanskrit), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

RForum is nice because it also acts as a nntp server so you could potentially use a USENET-style news reader instead of a web browser.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Penguins.

Also Aja/Dante was shut down due to the Admin/Noize conspiracy, not any wacky javascript claims. We still have every right to complain. Especially the penguins.

But since King Buttpipe Andrew won't be in charge soon, it may come back!

Domenico Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

I like it the way it is.

The tags sound promising and a skin for at work is genius (that's great, TOM).

Black text on white background with no avatars, sigs or any of that other bullshit.

No nested comments/answers. The simplicity of this board makes it so much easier to carry out a real discussion, or multiple discussions on the same thread.

Make it more searchable. I don't think there's any need to expand user profiles. People can always link to their website or myspace or blog, etc.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

i do miss the lil red 'x unread answers' flag, but otherwise i like it the way it is.

would it (slightly) help database/bandwidth issues to make it a default to only show the last x posts on a given thread, which you could then click through to see the rest if necessary?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

I like avatars.

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

I really, seriously like it the way it is.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

I do hate signatures though.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

And smiley animations are obv. awful. But I think avatars are above all these other common crap msg board traits. They have potential to amuse and inspire in ways that are difficult to predict (or so I have noticed when using LiveJournal).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

But I think avatars are above all these other common crap msg board traits.

Agreed, avatars is clearly lesser of those evils. In case some readers don't visit other boards that much and think we overreact, behold a couple of post from An Tennis Forum. The thread, by the way, reached 2240 posts, requiring 150 pages. [vomiting emoticon]

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

I notice there was also once a cricket board. How dare you kill the domain of man's greatest pastime!

Back before HTML was banned from the display name field, I stuck an image in there. It was k-funny for 5 seconds.
