On and off rain has been crazy this evening- foolishly left for home without an umbrella since it wasn't raining at the time, what with the flash flooding messing up all the tunnels it took me forever to get to Brooklyn where it was mad raining again. Crazy.

I walked into a store and it was just before sundown. I walked out ten minutes later and it was black as night and sheets of rain.

I'm so happy the power's still on.

(suburban MD, not NYC, but close enough)

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

Power out for five hours and counting. I am typing by candlelight.
I'm in W.Mass., so it's presumably the same storm.

How long until you throw everything in the fridge away? I'm thinking this is the big project that I have been avoiding that has now reached critical mass. (Cleaning out the fridge is always hard, so maybe this is a sign.)

It's ridiculous- this major storm blew through, knocked out the power, and now it's STILL 85 but with no possibility of relief through electricity, fans, a small a/c. I mean, I thought that things would cool down through a soft, gentle rain after the storm, allowing me to sleep.
No-ho-ho!
I am tired and miserable, but it is impossible to sleep when I am soaking the sheets with sweat whenever I lie down in my bed. It's cooler on the kitchen floor. That's where I'm camping right now.
I do have booze, laptop, candles and a very funny/scared kitty.
He doesn't like the candles! But...he wants to know the candles!

It's late, so...hopefully I can venture out tomorrow and find out when the electricity might be coming back. It's weird - there's a tiny strip of this small town (Easthampton) that is not affected, but the rest of this town and four surrounding towns are blacked out. I know this because I went to the 7-11 in the unaffected area and talked to the people in line who had driven there from other towns. I was surprised that this ten block area of easthampton seemed to be the only focus of electricity - and, y'know, I was driving around with my SO because staying in a brutally hot apartment is silly when you can contemplate your carbon footprint by risking death driving in a big storm because the car has A/C. And we definitely noticed that the 7-11 had become somewhat of a Bethlehem for the folks without electricity.

Whatever - I'm sounding like I'm blogging. It's not a big deal - the power will be on tomorrow, and nothing is leaking from the fridge right now.
Sorry for the long post - I really need to feel connected, so you, ilx, are my connection.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

i attended an "event" in the village last nite and leaving around nine it was like The Wizard of Oz outside, wind bending the trees over and blowing dust in my eyes, lightening flashing and raindrops just starting to fall. got on the subway @14th street and took the pokey local to the UWS and when I remerged the storm was ending: rain-slick streets and fallen tree branches adorning Broadway. nice, since I didnae have umbrella.

m coleman, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

How long until you throw everything in the fridge away?

Fridges can retain cold pretty well. If you avoid opening it, there's plenty of stuff that will stay good. I avoid the milk if the power stays off for more than a day though.

we saw some fucking hueg trees knocked over in riverside park last week. walking on riverside drive I asked my son "how much force would it take to not only pull that tree (gestures) up by its roots but rip apart the pavement too? isn't that what you did in science class this year?" CMON DAD IM DONE WITH SCHOOL OK!

Yeah I was thinking about the basement apartment dwellers especially in the areas where the water rise was over the sidewalk level

calstars, Saturday, 30 September 2023 15:16 (one year ago)

It’s especially bad considering how many basement apts are illegal and how many are the homes for undocumented people.

Plumber has been trying to diagnose a long-standing leak over here, punched a hole in our wall just in time for this storm and now there is some kind of spray behind the plastic they put up over the hole which is leaking slowly onto the floor, feels like maybe is something draining from the roof.

calstars, Thursday, 23 May 2024 14:26 (one year ago)

Good timing. Just as it started my wife called and told me the school nurse called to tell her my daughter wasn't feeling well. She's in the city today while I'm working from my printshop which is a few blocks from the school so I said I'd go get her. Halfway there I had to open the umbrella. While waiting for her the sky opened. It said it was going to last for another half hour so we ran. The streets were already flooding. I had to pick her up and carry her across the street because there were literal rivers streaming down the streets. Got home and changed into dry clothes. It stopped raining 20 minutes later.
