strangely, damon jones is a huge celebrity here and has his own line of shoes. they're totally knockoff jordans but with a modified swoosh. he's on every second commercial on the one sports network.

i kept seeing signs for MOMA here and just assumed it was, you know, a MOMA, but it's just a gigantic upscale apartment complex. there's also a SoHo, which is the same thing, fucking huge apartment complex.

just keep eating! it's not a question of "i have eaten so and so" it's all about "OH MY GOD I MUST EAT AS MUCH AS I CAN BEFORE I CAN NO LONGER DO THIS"

ken c (ken c), Friday, 11 August 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

the people's army guys seem to look exactly the same as the police and exactly the same as bank and mall security guards. i saw some turbo diesel vans full of guys rocking a bit of camo, but they just parked on wanfujing and started setting up big mcdonalds picnic umbrellas and giant red flags with yellow characters on them.

i don't have anymore cash to eat tonight because i blew my budget on massage girls. i seriously only have a few 1 rmb notes. is it common for there to be a brothel connected to a hotel????????

Seems like a duplicating of resources.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 August 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

when will i ever again get the chance to have sex with two beijing prostitutes on a rock hard bed in an 18 degree room?

you guys can recommend stuff in shanghai and anywhere in china, too, since i plan on being here for a long time. i seriously know nothing about china. i've learned how to say hi, rice, watermelon, chopsticks, and tea.

the guy i met last night told me that shanghai people are very "clever." in a negative sense. but also sort of admiring, i think. beijing people all work for the government and shanghai people are clever capitalists. and when you go to eat, they give you small portions, so you have to order lots. and if you want to eat seafood, make sure it's alive right up until it's cooked. i was eating a braised fish head in his restaurant and i don't know if it was that fresh.

oh, another thing, is there a rule for seeing other white people when traveling? they've mostly been rich euros in the louis vuitton stores and shit or fat clueless dudes with fanny packs. i got a nod or two from the fannypack dudes and just pretended i didn't notice.

sorry, posting/reading ilx makes me less homesick.

i heard 99 problems coming out of some building down some hutong and had to just stand there and mouth the words and shit. it was immensely comforting. I'M FROM THE HOOD STUPID WHAT KIND OF FACTS ARE THOSE. but i still can't really relate to the british dudes waiting in half a block long lineups to go into a fucking pizza hut. how good is that shit gonna be? i can see kfc or something but not pizza hut.

but good luck!

dylannn, Thursday, 8 October 2015 15:19 (ten years ago)

have you ever been to beijing before?

dylannn, Thursday, 8 October 2015 15:19 (ten years ago)

yeah i was there for work just before the olympics (2008?). we met with the sister-in-law of a colleague and she took us around some of the big tourist places and also to some local cafes etc. my main memories all involve the other guy i was travelling with at that time (russian expat living the uk, firmly anti-socialist to the point of being a paid up member of the British tory party) clashing with our guide (who i believe worked for the government in some capacity). we were standing in tiananmen square and he was asking her why there wasn't a memorial of the students who died. crushingly awkward. i remember the air quality being pretty bad that week, having amazing food and riding the subway for very little money.

i'm travelling alone this time and will be spending most of my time at tsinghua univ. i had to book a hotel somewhere near there in what appears to be a pretty dull business district.

what could be more fun that meeting ilxors? (serious q)
