you guys can recommend stuff in shanghai and anywhere in china, too, since i plan on being here for a long time. i seriously know nothing about china. i've learned how to say hi, rice, watermelon, chopsticks, and tea.
the guy i met last night told me that shanghai people are very "clever." in a negative sense. but also sort of admiring, i think. beijing people all work for the government and shanghai people are clever capitalists. and when you go to eat, they give you small portions, so you have to order lots. and if you want to eat seafood, make sure it's alive right up until it's cooked. i was eating a braised fish head in his restaurant and i don't know if it was that fresh.

i heard 99 problems coming out of some building down some hutong and had to just stand there and mouth the words and shit. it was immensely comforting. I'M FROM THE HOOD STUPID WHAT KIND OF FACTS ARE THOSE. but i still can't really relate to the british dudes waiting in half a block long lineups to go into a fucking pizza hut. how good is that shit gonna be? i can see kfc or something but not pizza hut.

― dylannn, Thursday, 8 October 2015 15:19 (ten years ago)
have you ever been to beijing before?
yeah i was there for work just before the olympics (2008?). we met with the sister-in-law of a colleague and she took us around some of the big tourist places and also to some local cafes etc. my main memories all involve the other guy i was travelling with at that time (russian expat living the uk, firmly anti-socialist to the point of being a paid up member of the British tory party) clashing with our guide (who i believe worked for the government in some capacity). we were standing in tiananmen square and he was asking her why there wasn't a memorial of the students who died. crushingly awkward. i remember the air quality being pretty bad that week, having amazing food and riding the subway for very little money.
i'm travelling alone this time and will be spending most of my time at tsinghua univ. i had to book a hotel somewhere near there in what appears to be a pretty dull business district.
what could be more fun that meeting ilxors? (serious q)
