suggestions for road trip

I'm planning a road trip from Western Massachussetts to Los Angeles. I'll be stopping first in Toronto to visit a friend of mine, then coming down and stopping in Michigan (Detroit or Kalamazoo maybe?), then heading to St. Louis, then possibly Denver, CO before heading to my final destination. Any suggestions for stops, roads to take, etc would be very helpful.

I'll also be dumpster diving across the country so any tips in that area are also welcome.

$300 in cash, two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.

ROAD TRIP THREAD

Vacillatrix (x Jeremy), Saturday, 12 August 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I just came back from my Ohio/Michigan road trip home last Saturday.

That which made my trip great was including these songs on a mix:

Eddie Holland - Jamie
Jackie Wilson - Call Her Up
Inez Foxx - Hurt By Love
Ray Charles - This Little Girl of Mine

Things I did:

Funeral for ladyfriend's family in Ohio (I'd skip this if I were you)

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (again, SKIP IT)

CEDAR POINT (do it)

Had Multigrain pancakes at Bob Evans (worth doing once I guess)

Went back to my tiny hometown of Albion Michigan (beautiful park!)

Pizza @ Cascarelli's, Ice Cream at Frosty Dan's (Albion MI)

Root Beer from the Hi-Lite Drive In (Marshall MI)

Greenfield Village in Dearborn (it's fun for a minute; grows old fast)

Motown Museum (hald assed, short, but still exciting)

I'm nostalgic already, even for the bad parts, thanks to that mix.

Some friends and I were going to see the biggest ball of twine somewhere in Minnesota before school starts. Unfortunately, it never panned out.

after st louis, i guess you would end up in kansas city, so after that, i think i'd do one of 3 vagueish routes

south: wichita, liberal, dalhart, tucumcari, santa fe, farmington, monument valley, grand canyon, vegas, mojave desert, la

middle: wichita, garden city, walsenburg, durango, canyons of the ancients, monticello, blanding, glen canyon, hanksville, bryce, cedar city, caliente, death valley, la (hmm, might need to cut some of this one out!)

to do denver: i guess i-70 to denver, green river, goblin valley, hanksville, bryce, beaver, miltord, ely, mono lake/yosemite, fresno, bakersfield, la

Timmy, me and sgs drove from Denver to LA (and she's from W Mass for what it's worth) so if you want to contact me/us off board we might be able to make suggestions.

where should I go in Michigan? Detroit? Ann Arbor? Grand Rapids? Kalamazoo?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Sunday, 13 August 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

How are you getting to Toronto? Kingston or Buffalo? Eitherway, stop by the wine regions in Prince Edward County or Niagara and pick up enough cheapo wine to last you to Nappa or Sonoma.
If you're coming from Kingston we can get fancy, but from Toronto to Hamilton (and for most of the 401) it is best just to get the miles behind you.

If you're stopping in Buffalo, I can recommend some tasty food.

Seriously, the best hot dogs in the world.

Buffalo's best chicken wings

There's a great vegetarian place too, down the road called Betty's.

The big ol'Rust Belt mansions are worth a look as well.

Yeah, where in Western Mass? Where I'm from!
Rte 5 along Lake Erie between Buffalo and Cleveland is very beautiful. It's grape country—the lake visible beyond the vineyards, beautiful farmhouses. Also, if you want to take a break from dumpster-diving, I had the best moussaka I've ever had in my life at a restaurant right on the lake around there. I CAN'T REMEMBER... And I don't think it even had a Greek name. Big parking lot—asphalt right to the water, lots of glass and chrome decor. I'm going to have to go back and find it myself.
