Real or Not?

When it is o.k. to lead an internet double life? Let's say you are not a troll but just on the internet compulsively lying about your life. IE. Your internet life does not follow through with your real life. In the internet life you have a job, lover, interesting friends and travel. In reality you are in front of a computer accomplishing nothing but building up a new reality in your head. Several cases in I Love Everything and some sleuthing came up with the results that some, tell the truth and other do not.

Is this a welcome to the new e-flesh? Where an online exsistence is more preferably to a real life?

When if lying does not necessarily hurt is it justified?

Why do it?

Bob Lind, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What are you doing sleuthing, weirdo?

Sterling Clover, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was about to say, why the interest in the 'real' details? Now if you excuse me, there's a hostile takeover of Microsoft I need to complete, followed by rescuing the moon from aliens.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What sleuthing are you talking about? This is an intriguing development in the world of ILE. Please don't let everyone know that I'm really a stripper.

IS THAT "IN SYNC" ?

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't that that band Riverside who sounded exactly like the Ocean Blue?

Nitsuh, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps they are chasing the bright, elusive butterfly of love, Bob.

Kerry, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't see what's so surprising about it. People lie about themselves all the time in real life. Why should the internet be any different? It's justified and preferable in cases where the person is hopelessly ugly (sadly enough). I had the misfortune of "meeting" someone from the net who called my apartment from the pay phone across the street. Without being cruel, I can honestly say I have trouble believing people would befriend her in the real world: 300 pounds or so with inch-thick eyebrows. Honest. Wearing a black and white HORIZONTAL shirt to compliment her extreme obesity. She had tracked my website on network solutions, got my number, found out where I lived and came to "visit me"! It really pissed me off at the time, but gave me a whole new empathy for "online addicts". I could never have imagined a sadder human being if I didn't see it myself. Judging by her online personality, she sounded like your average 25 year old.

Since then, I am always anonymous on the net.

Also, what sort of sleuthing could possibly achieve any interesting results besides tracking IP numbers and figuring, "Well, that person only posts from one number ALL day!" Or tracking down the number and saying, "Hey, that's a college in Utah! He said he was the Primie Minister of Canada!"

I've seen, particularly on music boards, the assumption that someone is a 15 year old kid living with his parents one too many times based on IP sleuthing. How you could get that from an IP is beyond me.

As for me, personally, Mr. Korzen from Barcelona successfully figured out what company I used to work for, so at least there's verification for that for the Friends of March listees. As far as my girlfriend and my many, many travels (two), I guess you'll just hafta take my word for that...

Based on the "first one smelt it, dealt it" rule of thumb, I'm guessing you lie about your life online? (just kidding).

Nude Spock, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still want to know the big secret. I'm intrigued.

Ally, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So am I. Baffled as well.

this is really disturbing , why are you looking about ?

anthony, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony, is this you and your friend playing around? ;)

Nude Spock, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not Bob Lind by the way, without IP addresses I'd like to know how 'he' did 'his' sleuthing. Besides, after levelling those kind of accusations I couldn't help but look at 'his' IP address. Touche!

DG, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I kno his big secret is about me, lying fuckface. maybe i'm just paranoid.

ally, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, this'll learn me. I use the word 'sleuth' one little time, and look what happens...

Kim, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I met a girl online a few years ago where the chemistry was more than apparent. She had sent me her picture and she was beautiful and more than troubled. I am married but told her I was not. She gave me life and I gave her lies. Nothing happened with the relationship but after the tenth meeting I told her that I was married. I regretted doing so ever since. So lying is not justified if the person or persons want to bring the internet lives into reality.

M. Sawinski, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're lying to people and then planning on meeting them so they can find out that you were lying, it's just pointless and silly and more harmful than good, I think.

I've got two livejournals, though. One's my real one, and one's the fake on that I forgot existed. All fuuulll of lovely lies! I don't see the harm in it as it's just for my amusement.

Maria, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose it's sad, but such people would have a life no less sad if there were never an internet. Whether it enhances a life that would otherwise be doomed to sadness or reinforces it is not clear to me : I've known a lot of people who have never been near the internet who are hell-bent on staying in a rut. They'll just sit in front of their tv or hang out at the racetrack instead. All I can say is caveat lector. Also, you can very often sniff out authenticity on the internet as you can in real life.

Kerry, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All I can say is caveat lector.

Was this intentional or not? Brilliant either way!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In real life I am a fundamentalist Amish woman with a hankering for cucumber sandwitches

goeff, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, shucks. I speak Latin, the Language of Romance, so it wasn't that hard. Although I wasn't thinking of any other Lectors, or Lecters, or Spectres/ors to be truthful. :)

A little decoding fun

Although "Bob Lind" may not even know who Bob Lind is (was?). Shows you how old I am. And I am not Bob Lind! Just as intrigued as all of you are, not about faux personalities, but Bob Lind.

Kerry, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

True or false: Hannibal L. was originally going to be Hyppolite Lecter, in ref.to "hypocrite lecteur, mon semblable, mon frère", the reader as addressed in one of Baudelaire's poems, as basically being as sick as B.himself...

cept Hyppolite = a bit naff, plus hannibal rhymes with know-it-all

mark s, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my internet life mirrors my real life.

jel, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If by "rhymes" you mean "ends with the same letter."

Pyth, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Kerry, I remember that song as well and wasn't it a nice one? It was in the mid 60's or thereabouts. :)

Gale Deslongchamps, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the secret? DG - do you mean Bob Lind is a girl? Why would you bother to lie on the internet? I thought the opposite - no-one knows you so it's much easier to tell the truth.

maryann, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(hannibal rhymes with cannibal pyth, but i got bored...)

mark s, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just a double life ? some of us are already spiralling into infinity with multiple addresses on different forums. It's not good.

))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))), Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Maria, You stated that you thought that if you lied to someone for your own amusement, that all be hunky dorey? ( justified) What if... you fell madly in love with someone and they led you on for a time, talking love talking together, and then told you they were just amusing themselves. How would YOU feel?

Gale Deslongchamps, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gale, I think you've read far too much into her post. The way I read it, she's implying the opposite.

Kim, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gale, it's a livejournal, not a conversation. It's more like writing a story than telling lies to someone I love.

Maria, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Maria, Why would a live journal be here? Please explain further.

Gale Deslongchamps, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

frankly i don't care if people on this forum lied about themselves. i come here to get entertained, not to make friends. i'm not saying i haven't become fond of any personalities here, its just that the reality is i won't meet most of y'all so i've got better things to do than check up on a bunch of lines on my computer screen. bob, you need to stop taking the internet so seriously.

di, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I leave a few aspects of my life out online but I don't fabricate anything. Mostly because it'd just lead to me becoming yet more paranoid.

Tom, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gale, a livejournal is an account set up at http://www.livejournal.com. You can go browse through randomly to see what they are.

Maria, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for getting back with the info Maria.

Gale Deslongchamps, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
