Research from the London School of Economics indicates that physically attractive couples are 36 percent more likely than unattractive couples to produce a girl as their first child.

Okay, here's a theory. I read somewhere that women under tremendous stress—in active war-zones etc, are more likely to give birth to girls. Nature's way of making sure the species goes on, as it only takes one sperm donor but you gotta have multiple uteri.
SO...maybe the very attractive women are under tremendous stress because of the creeping suspicion that they've been selected for their looks and could be rejected when they lose the looks. Maybe being beautiful is like living in a bomb shelter! OH THE POOR THINGS!!!!!!

Come WWIII, EVERY child will be a girl, which will mean the end of organised team sport as we know it.

I had a dream that I had a newborn son last night. I was having trouble preparing his cereal(?) correctly so my mother had to help me. But then I sat down and breast-fed him! Strange dream.

I have two daughters, and they are absolutely beautiful which is a huge surprise as both their father and I are hideous.

If I force my sons to get sex changes, will I become beautiful?

Yes, but people would hate you.

Except me. I don't hate anyone.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

i heard that if you plan to have a child and watch the calendar and conceive immediately on the first possible day, you are more likely to have a boy. there's some reason for this that I can't remember right now.

It's something to do with the different swimming behaviours of 'girl' sperm' and 'boy' sperm, iirc.

is the younger one funnier than the older one?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, yes she is.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Our younger was more of a clown, too. I think it's a sibling-order thing. The older one is so domineering, and so pissed off at the attention paid to the younger one—the younger one fashions him- or herself a clown in reaction to all the storminess of the older one.

"He discovered that 56 percent of first babies born to very attractive parents were girls"

Much as I'd like to believe this story (cos of my wee girl), I gotta say it looks like garbage. If the error in this study is not more than 6%, then I'll be very surprised.
