first of all he was 2 hrs away from teh aids conference in toronto and missed it to spend time with his family and second he is pressuring the provincal and municpal governments of vancouver to shut down the safe injection site there, even though it helps stop the spread of a number of diseases more effectivley then any other way we have.

i have never been so angry at the man

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

he fucking sucks and i hate him

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

I have.

Like when he banned the media from services for deceased soldiers.

Or when he questioned what Canadian UN workers were doing in Lebanon when Israel blew them up.

Or when he appointed a Conservative Senator to cabinet and then sweet talked Emerson into crossing the floor when he had been highly critical of such things only a matter of months earlier.

Or when he stopped lowering the flags to honour fallen soldiers.

Or anything to do with that pathetic softwood lumber "deal"

Or every time he uttered "made in Canada environmental plan" (when he had none whatsoever)

Or... well, you get the idea, I have to get back to work here.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Not doing too much to dispel the notion that he thinks that people with AIDS deserves it, is he?

everything (everything), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

Who are you talking about? (the only Harper I know is Collins)

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't even know that was a notion.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

i was wondering too

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Let me rephrase that. "Not doing to much to dispel MY notion that he thinks people with Aids deserve it".

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, stephen harper, our prime minister, keep up dudes.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Wow I thought Chretien was still yr PM. I am embarrased now.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 August 2006 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

Chretien was pushed off a cliff onto an ice flow by his former finance minister Paul Martin

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 August 2006 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

and then Stephen Harper harpooned Martin from his ceremonial cabin cruiser.

hahaha, totally!

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Thursday, 17 August 2006 03:25 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, thanks. For some weird reason, Canadian politicians don't get mentioned on the news very often here in belgium.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 17 August 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

Or anywhere, probably (much like Aus politix)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 August 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

There are worse things than complete and total global irrelevance.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 17 August 2006 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

OK, here's where I confess that I don't understand why people are so upset about Harper not attending the AIDS conference. If he'd gone, then it's a bonus, but I'm not sure why he should be *expected* to go. We all know that heart and stroke disease is the #1 killer in Canada, always has been, probably always will be. The Canadian Cardiovascular Congress meets every year, has the PM ever gone? *Any* PM? If so, then I would be happy to be proven wrong on this point.

If I had to pick between the two (probably a false dichotomy, but whatever) then I'd rather have a PM who gives proper attention to the biggest health problem in Canada than one who makes a token PR appearance at an AIDS conference.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 17 August 2006 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

barry do you not think there's a difference, politically, b/w AIDS and heart attacks?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 August 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

I think the aids conference is about a little bit more than just what is killing Canadians.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 August 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

I already acknowledged the political importance of the AIDS conference -- the first of its kind, a major world issue, famous guests, etc. However, given that the PM doesn't attend other health-related conferences (again, if I am wrong about this then tell me), I'm not going to lose sleep about him not attending this particular conference. Like Thermo said, there are plenty of other things to get pissed off about.

If you really want to talk about politics, then health care is consistently the #1 issue on the national agenda. It dominates every election campaign. It seems like every week there's an article somewhere about people who are sick or dying because they're on a huge waiting list for a serious operation. Toronto probably hosts dozens of internationally renowned medical-related conferences per year -- you'd think that the PM would show face at one of them.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 17 August 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Barry, quit picking on AIDS.

Tony Clement did bother showing up - and really you don't need the Prime Minister to attend, as long as the Health Minister does. This is probably one of those situations tho, where having a deputy PM would come in handy for Boss "I Don't Need No Stinking Deputy" Harper.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 August 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

its the one of those one two punches barry--not going to the conference, and then working against effective aids policies for ideological reasons...

its like not only not going to the cardivascular conference, but then outlawing dietican adn nutrionist clinics, because jesus told him to

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 17 August 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Harper really has no clue what he's doing.

More info on Vancouver's Safe Injection Site and a handy form to let Mr. Harper and his American bosses know what you think about the issue here: http://www.communityinsite.ca

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 August 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/08/17/safe-injection.html

The federal government won't be making any announcements on the future of Vancouver's safe-injection site or AIDS funding this week because the prime minister believes the issue has become "so politicized," a government spokesperson said Thursday.

BTW, does harper still finish his speeches with "god bless Canada"?

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Thursday, 17 August 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

What's more "politicized"? Considering ACTUAL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH or shutting something down because it offends your smug sense of moral superiority?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 August 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

And as if it never was "politicized" to begin with.

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Thursday, 17 August 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

He does realize he's a "politician", right?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 August 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

no, he is a servant of god, dammit

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 17 August 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't vote for him to fill that possition either.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 17 August 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

The federal government won't be making any announcements on the future of Vancouver's safe-injection site or AIDS funding this week because the prime minister believes the issue has become "so politicized," a government spokesperson said Thursday.

Yeah, this is above and beyond the call of stupid.

NEWS FLASH: Tory politicians to go on extended vacation, citing their jobs as "too political".

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 18 August 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

okay that's just fucking maddening

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Friday, 18 August 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Just when you thought they couldn't bring it to the next level
Tory MP hits new low.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Well that was bound to happen.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

oh sorry are we mocking someone talking about this hezbollah?

perhaps i have confused them with the beirut kitten sanctuary :(

The Real DG (D to thee G), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

hmm?

The Real DG (D to thee G), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

It's more the insinuation that the Liberals, Bloc and NDP are all pussies because they dare disagree with PM who thinks that killing 1200+ people including our own citizens working for the UN is a 'measured response' to kidnapping two soldiers.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

they should have dropped puppies on the 'bollah :(

The Real DG (D to thee G), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

oh sorry are we mocking someone talking about this hezbollah?,
yes, that one.

The Real DG (D to thee G), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Lets face it, no matter what the subject - comparing anything to Nazis is just retarded. It completely diminishes any point you may be trying to make.

And no one is comparing Hezbollah to the Humane Society or anything here.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

the boys in company Hez would be quite flattered with the comparison

The Real DG (D to thee G), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

What's that supposed to mean?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

i mean w/laughing boy adolf, not the humane society

The Real DG (D to thee G), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

cats that look like Hitler

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, this thread got awesome! Thermo OTM, btw.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
I've been pretty quick to call Harper out when I disagree with him, which is often, but I'm on his side with regards to China. I'm happy that there's at least one head-of-state not bending over backwards to kiss their ass, and ignore all the evil shit that they carry on with just because it's in the corporations' best interests. Human rights were cited as major reason as to why Beijing didn't win the Olympics in 2000, and yet, the whole world will be flocking there two summers from now. What's changed? As far as human rights, nothing. But their economic clout has now placed them beyond reproach. Mr.Harper and myself will probably see eye-to-eye on very little else, but good on ya Steve.
