we want ken fap (Glasgow, 25th August, @ Mono)

Didn't want this to get buried in another thread.

As those who read beautiful places in scotland will be aware, Ken C is driving round the extremities of Scotland, and ending up in Glasgow on Friday. This evidently means we have to go to the pub.

Plan is kind of early-doors-ish, probably around 4 so people can join in after work. There may be dancing at NPL at the Woodside later on too.

Now if someone could suggest a nice pub that people will get a seat in on a Friday after work, that'd be marvellous. A reconnaissance mission on Friday just gone there by myself and Onimo suggests that Sporto on Waterloo Street doesn't get very busy compared to its neighbours.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

I also vote for Club Tropicana (drinks sadly not free) 80s bar on Hope Street, which is so horrendous it's funny. The DJ looks like the dead one out of Black Lace with Limahl's hair, and dances in his DJ booth. The barmaids, none of whom look like they had even been born in the 80s, all climb up on the bar and dance to organised-fun things like the TimeWarp. When I was in there, they were performing to, erm, me and my mate. And no-one else. This was about 6.30 pm on a Friday. You get a free paper garland handed to you when you buy a drink. And you get to listen to Tight Fit.

I think we'd get a seat in there.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

(we should also maybe plan some drinking for Belle and Sebastian in Edinburgh on the 27th?)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

Can't they fucking organise it themselves?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

Haha.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

like i said on some other thread somewhere else: i'm well up for this, although i have no idea yet what shape my friday is going to take.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

This is very exciting.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be out. Can we go to a nice pub?

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

we're certainly not going to an eighties theme bar.

well, i'm certainly not.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

i had a dream last night that i went to Glasgow! i met my friend in a shop!

that is all.

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

follow your dreams man

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Someone suggest a nice pub. I don't know what Madchen means by a nice pub anyway. I hope this does not equate to poncey. Or, worse, a *bar*.

I forgot to mention that when we were in Sporto on Friday they were playing Smash Hits TV or something of that nature, and the feature was 20 Dudes Who Dance, presented by Chico. (Stop! Hammer Time!*)

*possibly only funny to Onimo, and even then, probably not that funny.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

I had a dream last night that Elton John did a special show at the Woodside Social Club, but I'm not going to go there. (anyway, his mic cut out during the first song and he threw a right barney).

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

i've been to Glasgow a bunch of times before to see said friend. maybe i should again sometime...

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

yes. do. you can come with us all to an eighties bar.

if i say "let's go to mono" i'm gonna get yelled at, i suppose. the station? i think ken would like the station.

sleazy's? the variety?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

The Station! (doesn't Stet hate the Station? I don't care, I've been once and that was enough to convince me of its top pubbishness credentials)

I'm sick of the sight of Mono. Variety/Sleazy's aren't conducive to sitting together/hearing each other, generally. We had quite a good night in Tuts the last time, but I imagine that could get full of post-work folks quite quickly.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think stet hates the station. like me, he runs the risk of bumping into assorted workmates, but hey. that's hardly a problem.

unless it's the guy who wants to bust my plums with a hammer. still, not much i can do about that. and it'd be a form of entertainment, i suppose.

the great thing about the station is that it serves PROPER BEER from PROPER PUMPS, which gets you PROPER PISSED and in the mood to listen to MEAT LOAF on the jukebox.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

I've not been to the Station, but I like the sound of it.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Best thing last (only) time about the Station was that it was snowing and cold outside and I got to sit right next to the big roaring fire and keep all toasty and warm whilst simultaneously blocking all the heat from getting to Grimly and Stet.

It also has a barman who mumbles unintelligibly at you. I love it.

unless it's the guy who wants to bust my plums with a hammer.

That *is* stet, isn't it?

I think we have winner. Especially since I will be in my Glasgow office about five minutes away from there and I get out of work at THREE O'CLOCK on Friday. I sense ruin.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god, please not the Station. I'm on holiday! I shouldn't have to see work people, looking at me and getting ready to gossip about all of youse. Seriously: the station is for all intents actually our office, so it'll be just like going to work. (More so if the landlord was baldy).

How about ... GF, what's the truly terrifying pub opposite the theatre? That's got equal old-manly qualities.

stet (stet), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

it pains me to say it, but stet has ... gaah ... a ... poi ... MMMPH ... a point.

for once.

but we are NOT going to mcconnell's (subs pls check). it is the worst fucking pub in the universe.

i'm off ALL FUCKING DAY on friday. i might start drinking as soon as i wake up. ie 2pm.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

and getting ready to gossip about all of youse

also, i don't think this will go much beyond:

"look, simon's over there."
"aye."
"he's a wee twat, isn't he?"
"aye."
"pint?"
"go on."

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

i'm typing this very hurriedly from my local library in dennistoun - my home phone can't be reconnected until the 5th Sept - but am now settled in Glasgow and wld like to make it along to this drink up, so will check this thread again, thanks

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 08:28 (nineteen years ago)

my friday is now taking more shape ... it'll probably be 6 or 7pm before i'm actually able to get to a pub, but i'm not going to edinburgh until saturday now. dunno about NPL, but i'll see.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone actually know any pubs you can get several seats in in Glasgow city centre on a Friday evening then? As I said upthread, Sporto wasn't busy last Friday, and despite the name, the intrusion of sport is minimal, unless there's actual real sport on (though come to think of it I was in there when Andy Murray was playing at Wimbledon and they managed to not even have that on).

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

What about what was the Carnavon?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Over the M8 = not city centre. Curtails my drinking time if I have to go miles to get a train. I am teh selfish.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

It only takes 20 seconds to cross the M8!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

It's miles away. It's not convenient. Next!

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Thing is, pubs next to stations are shite.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

There's next to stations and there's THE OTHER SODDING SIDE OF GLASGOW. Then there are lots of things inbetween. Compromise?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

(also Hopkins to thread to prove you wrong about pubs next to stations)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

I realise I've ruined the Oscar Slater (pub what used to be Carnarvon) being useless argument by enthusing about the Station which is also similarly miles away.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

i will come but there's no way i'm going to the southside.

southside it is then...

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Oscar Slaters is not southside. It's St George's Cross. It's in no-man's-land.

No-one should go to the southside. Last time Glasgow-ILX did that, we wandered for miles in the rain whilst Grimly led us a merry dance to a totally shut pub. Then we ended up somewhere weird.

Last time I went to the southside, I wandered forever trying to find a bank machine. What sort of unsophisticated hellhole of an area doesn't have a cash machine except the ones in pubs that charge you £1.50+ to get at your money, eh? That's £1.50 that'd be better served getting on a bus to somewhere that isn't the Southside.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hopkins' pub advice is 'interesting'. 15 years I've been in Edinburgh and Hopkins' favourite pub is one I've never heard of. In fact, I was sure he'd just made it up until I bumped into it about 6 weeks ago. I'm waiting 'til he comes to visit until I go to the place.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Are you coming out to play on Sunday, KeefW? Perhaps we could go there and check it out.

Pleasance-FAP Mark 2, perhaps? I have to go somewhere with my brother for a few hours post-him-getting-to-Edinburgh/pre-B&S.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

Ailsa, I can't... I'm in France. Anyway, it's at Meadowbank, which is probably as far as St.George's cross is from Glasgow city centre. But be at liberty to try it out! It's just off of London Road, next to Meadowbank shopping centre. It's called the 'Hop, Step and Jump'. I like the Pleasance.

Sorry I keep managing to not be about when you're over.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think you're avoiding me. Meadowbank is way off my Edinburgh radar. I shall be at The Pleasance, I should think.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

You met Kev, though the other week, didn't you!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

I did?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, yes, I've just worked out what you're talking about! Grimly's birthday, that bloke that knows you. Right. Sorry.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

On Sunday, can people meet in Bert's Bar in Stockbridge, as it's brilliant and does good pie and has footy on.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

if the main criteria for friday are tables and the town centre, how about - cough - the griffin?

or that bier hall place on sauchiehall street, above the sports shop?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

or pewter pot?
it has several advantages:
1) rather local, thus usually empty and relatively cheap
2) funny wee 'beer garden' out back for smokers/in case of nice weather
3) ken's been there before, thus knows how to get there
4) it's close to an underground station, thus easy to get to
5) it's close to the woodside, for those who will be attending NPL afterwards
6) KARAOKE

oops.. maybe i shouldn't have mentioned the last one... if it's any consolation, it doesn't start til 8 or so... and if it's rubbish, there's always the lansdowne 'round the corner for you cultured lot

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

The Pewter Pot was closed last time I was in that general direction (quite some time ago, I hasten to add). I take it it's reopened?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

The place on Sauchiehall St is also closed, I think.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

yes, it's reopened. i walk by it every day.
go wherever you want, though. i doubt i'll be there

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

The Bierhalle, I've just been informed, is all boarded up. I won't be able to make it out for pubbismo, though there's every possibility I'll make a shambling performance at NPL in the evening.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

arse! the bierhalle on sauchiehall street? what about the gordon street one?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

I *may* be at Pop League. This depends on the level of ruin achieved earlier. What time are people going to the pub then?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 24 August 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

i think it'll be 7/7.30 before i'm there.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 24 August 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

ha! mono! you guys suck.
that is all
see you later ally

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

what the hell is wrong with you people?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 24 August 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

Let it be noted that I said "not fucking Mono again"/"I'm sick of the sight of Mono" upthread. I capitulated in the face of pressure, and lack of time. Really, there are *how* many pubs in Glasgow? Pub rockists, the lot of you. (also Sam Smiths' stout is horrible and organic wine is horrible and vegan food is horrible and we're never out of Mono)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 25 August 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

:) :) :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 25 August 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

I must admit to chuckling when i saw the name change to the thread. I've never been to Mono, is it like the old 13th note on Glassford St?

leigh (leigh), Friday, 25 August 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

i think so, although i never went there.

jed: despite yr obvious disgust at the venue, are you coming tonight?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 25 August 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

I like the fact that Ken C hasn't posted here.

g00blar (gooblar), Friday, 25 August 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

he's probably stuck in a bothy somewhere, halfway up a mountain.

i take it someone has his mobile number and has texted him?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 25 August 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

oh, they have. cool.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 25 August 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

Can i give someone my mobile number so they can txt me with details of the Edinburgh FAP on Sunday as i won't be online over the weekend?

leigh (leigh), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

simon, i'm not disgusted at the venue, my thoughts are about the same as ailsa's but since ken would like it and ward f has never been it's the obvious choice. i'm coming down but prob not til 10ish. see yeez later.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

well done glasgow, well done.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

bollox, i was just trimming my beard, trying to look 'presentable' for this eve, when i shaved far too much off one side of my face. so if you see a fat bloke dressed in black w. a wonky beard, that's me (at least i haven't got a big zit on my forehead or something, as usually happens when I'm preparing for a new social situation)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 25 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

dude, happens to me and my 'burns all the time. i share your pain.

so what time's it all kicking off?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 25 August 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to see My Morning Jacket, being the fan of hairy southern rock that I am (and cos I'm reviewing it) and then off to NPL so I'll have to give it a miss. A shame, cos I met Ken C at ATP and he was a top chap.
Have fun kidz!

Stew (stew s), Friday, 25 August 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Change of plan - no NPL after all so I'll see y'all at Mono later on!

Stew (stew s), Friday, 25 August 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone have Leigh's mobile number if she's not going to be around online?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 26 August 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't make it to NPL after all, since after last month's sweatbox and a horrendously busy week, I thought better of it, and went to see Volver instead. Sorry I missed it though, I like it when there's no bar queue.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Saturday, 26 August 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't. It means you drink more :-(

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 26 August 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yer arse! Nothing like a few gins to help you compete with the bodypoppers!

scotstvo (scotstvo), Saturday, 26 August 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

Saturday night was fun!

Mädchen (Madchen), Sunday, 27 August 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, it was Friday, wasn't it? I did mean Friday night was fun! Honest. Saturday night was spent falling asleep to Doctor Strangelove (which was fun in its own way).

Mädchen (Madchen), Sunday, 27 August 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

friday night rocked. it was excellent to meet new people, as always. drinking myself insensible was maybe less well advised, but ... well. i think it's important to use organic cider to open up potential new horizons etc.

ken: sorry i pissed off from club without saying goodbye properly, but i suddenly had a MOMENT OF REALISATION (ie "if i don't go home now, i am absolutely fucked") and ... well, drunken logic had propelled me halfway down the street before i thought, bugger, i've not told anyone i'm going. (especially stet, for whom i think i was meant to be buying GIN.)

i have a vague memory of falling out of the taxi on my arse. and of throwing a box of fish at stet. as always, i blame stet for the whole thing.

have fun in edinburgh, everybody. i was through yesterday and had a lovely day. the spiegelgarden is pleasant in the evening.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 27 August 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, thank you all for a nice evening on Friday, and for making me feel most welcome - ILX Glasgow roxx

I really liked Mono, esp. the rec shop which is much better than the London Rough Trade shops, Selectadisc etc. - I shall def be going back there when I've got some cash - now if only I can score some smokeable hemp products, life will be complete...

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Sunday, 27 August 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

there was a time when i'd have been able to help there, but not any more. apologies.

will give you a call tomorrow as discussed.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 27 August 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

That stuff's really bad for you.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Sunday, 27 August 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

nothing is as bad for you as organic cider.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 27 August 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

Not delivering promised gin to thirsty popleaguers is going to prove very bad for someone

stet (stet), Sunday, 27 August 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

oh no. quake quake. tremble. PHEEL MY PHEAR.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 27 August 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

It's Madchen you have to answer to, fishboy

stet (stet), Sunday, 27 August 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

oops. sorry, mädchen. still, given that it's all stet's fault [1], he now owes you GIN.

[1] it just is, okay?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 27 August 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Cider 'may have health benefits'

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 28 August 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAH. o god.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 28 August 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

home sweet home.

hi guys! was good to see/meet you all! the mono was fun as usual (although i didn't know PEWTER POT was mentioned as a possible venue! i would have been there in a flash, but then would have belted out karaoke classics, so you were probably wise)

NPL was fun too, although I was already one organic beer too many by then i think!

sunday: wtf with them wrist bands eh?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 August 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

hurrah for ken! same time next week, then?

hang on, woah, i can feel a cider flashback coming on. i see stet's grinning face looming at me. and ailsa's cigarettes. arse.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 28 August 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

I have missed a kenfap, and that saddens me, but I am glad at least I didn't miss any kenkaraoke.

try glasgow again when I am back, ken!

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 28 August 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, wristbands, grumble, moan, especially at Mistopher Chris, not really of these parts but known to many, who stood inside the smug bastard arena pointing at his wristband and giving us all the finger.

Belle and Seb were fab, like, proper old songs and sounding good. Also, top beautiful venue points for having Edinburgh bloody Castle as yr backdrop. Wow.

I missed my bus by about a minute and we ended up drinking at Teviot for a while then crashing out in some backpacker hostel place sharing a dorm with bunkbeds with about a hundred Australian tourists. Marvellous.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 07:41 (nineteen years ago)

It was a nice hedge.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 08:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, wristbands, grumble, moan, especially at Mistopher Chris, not really of these parts but known to many, who stood inside the smug bastard arena pointing at his wristband and giving us all the finger.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

When are you back cathy?? I'll come back for a cathy fap!

I'm glad you managed to find somewhere ailsa! i was worried when i only saw your text the following morning! was fast asleep back at mortonhall by then.

also it turned out that our tent was like about 10 yards away from lucy's lovely friends(whom i never caught the name of)' camper-van! it was awesome. we were going to all meet up for breakfast at the burger van in the morning but it wasn't open :\

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone seems to go to night clubs and discos, in Scotland.

I will be in Glasgow, soon enough. FAP?

the pinefox (the pinefox), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I never really go to clubs, really. This is a new development, and one which my liver does not wholly approve of. When are you here?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

i go to clubs. then i leave again quickly, without buying stet any gin.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

i go to clubs and then not really remembering what happens during the club.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

-ing

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

I will be back in late september. so I am going to just miss the pinefox fap too. : (

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

When exactly is the Pinefox FAP?

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

dunno. count me in for it (if i'm about).

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)
