"Craig Brewer's follow-up to last year's Sundance sensation Hustle & Flow comes as close to exploitation heaven as any studio based film made in the past 20 years," says Esquire.

This ISN'T a porn parody of Black Hawk Down? How disappointing.
― StanM, Friday, 6 June 2008 04:27 (seventeen years ago)
I liked it.
The movie says something true that isn't expressed much in movies, or anywhere else, at least not this directly or visually--with that chain to the radiator late in the film. It's about authority, about how being an authority in someone's life can help that person, how authority can express familial love, how it can be felt as familial love, and maybe, for some people in some situations, be the truest parental love.
I'm saying this as somebody who has suspected authority all his life--I've been an anarchist since I was 16. Most movies about authority see nothing good in it, and a lot of these are my favorites films (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, to pick at random). If a movie about authority does see something good about it, it usually gets at the issue sideways, through old tropes about the tough love of good parents, or the character-building aspects of boot camp or a merciless coach. If a film gets to the emotional heart of authority's appeal, it's usually in an erotic way, or in a fascistic way, or (if it's anti-authority) in a way that demonstrates that the one with power is the truly needy one.
Black Snake Moan bypasses all those cliches by making a series of seemingly bizarre and openly provocative choices about characters and plot (right down to the meant-to-be-mistaken-as-sexual title) that actually wind up serving to isolate the issue. To my eyes, critics who wanted it to say something more profound about race or sex were missing the point.

Which only works if there's an authority in your life. I honestly think it's a very healthy thing to do. I sadly didn't rebel (until later in life). But that's apropos of nothing. Just wanted to say I STILL need to see this movie. Damn.
