The Comedy Central roast of Shatner

As these things go, not bad, but they sure didn't save any material for a George Takei roast.

They also pwned all the comics by showing the "Rocket Man" clips.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

it was okay. andy dick needs to be put to sleep.

HO SNAP

mentalismé (sanskrit), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

Betty White stole the whole show!

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

"Shatner's nuts"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

a shatner roast sounds like the most redundant thing ever

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

I asked my mom to Tivo this for me, she called me about 10:30 and was like "oh no I'm sorry I forgot" and I could hear my dad in the background all "it's not like it's not gonna be on every hour of every day for the rest of our lives!".

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

I am just...imagining...a long ... parade of comics holding out their hands ... and doing the umpteenth imitation... of the trademark Shatner delivery, where he uses ...pauses... for emphasis...the way a rockabilly singer uses hiccups.

My Little Ruud Book (Ken L), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

this was hilarious.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

it was okay. seemed kinda lazy to get so much mileage out of "Takei is GAY" jokes.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Tagay more like it amirite

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

the TJ Hooker punchlines were few but choice.

Takei and Nichelle Nichols delivered. Farrah Fawcett's participation was kinda cruel, really.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

I was watching this sporadically, but is Andy Dick the person least capable in the entire world of taking a joke, or what?

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

oh c'mon, the whole stomping-around-making-a-face thing is funning. Jeff Ross (who I've never seen be funny aside from these things) did it once too.

Dick is basically there to provide material for others (but his solo bit had some resonance given the long history of KirkSpock gay fanfic).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

In Britland, 'roast' has an entirely different meaning nowadays. And I'm not talking about the Sunday joint.

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

yeah say what? Dick's whole schtick is behaving badly and then letting other people riff off of it. His own bit was a little clumsy but I was glad he went for the classic Kirk/Spock fanfic angle rather than more jokes about Takei.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Farrah Fawcett's participation was kinda cruel, really.

It was the biggest disaster since Anna Nicole Smith at that awards show. Fawcett couldn't put a single sentence together and blew the punchline on every single joke. It was unbelievable.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

That guy from the Howard Stern Show was pretty damned funny.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

I hope by "that guy from the Howard Stern Show" you mean Artie Lange.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Because I love him. I'm in love with him.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

what was Farrah doing there anyway? I'm not aware of her and Shatner ever working together...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

I hope by "that guy from the Howard Stern Show" you mean Artie Lange.

Yeah, he was on fire.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, fair enough, I admit that I wasn't paying close attention, but the parts I did see just made him seen like a giant baby. If that's his schtick, however...

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Because I love him. I'm in love with him

Nickalicious, you are a sick, sick man.

Although I must say the only reason I saw this was b/c of my boyfriend's mancrush on all things Howard. ::shudder::

chaki (chaki), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

the Lange guy seems about as funny as Stern since H.S. became another sad old geek dinosaur w/ a girlfriend young enough to be his daughter.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

yah umm.. something tells me howie isnt really trying to appeal to your demo, dude.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

you know what i never want to see? a christopher walken roast.

gear (gear), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

I loved Lange's Kevin Pollack rip.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 21 August 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

I would totally go for a Walken roast if Buck Dharma showed up to give him some shit.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

if the aliens from Communion showed up that'd be awesome

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

Has anyone seen the Bob Saget one, and witnessed the blinding brilliance of Norm McDonald?

kenan, Sunday, 24 August 2008 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

yes. it was one of those "wait, is he really going to do this?" moments.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 24 August 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

i said "what the h is that for??"

max, Sunday, 24 August 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

"Yeah, a cauliflower"

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Sunday, 24 August 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

thing that got me about Norm was how the audience wasn't really into it, but the other people on stage were dying. though he wasn't the "funniest", he was by far the most memorable.

rockapads, Sunday, 24 August 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

Bob, you have lot of well-wishers here tonight. A lot of them would like to throw you down one -- a well. They want to murder you in a well.

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 24 August 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

"that's not your only resemblance to rin tin tin"
"...?"
"your fucking dog-face"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 24 August 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

The way he swallows the punchline of the "Lions versus the Tigers" gag may be some of the best stand-up craftsmanship I've seen in fucking ages.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Sunday, 24 August 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

i swear i seen this thread somewhere before

deeznuts, Sunday, 24 August 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

There are two other threads and a poll about it.

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 24 August 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

dang i thought it was some kind of mystical deja vu thing but thats probably a more reasonable explanation

deeznuts, Sunday, 24 August 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Norm was fantastic. The clip where you only see his stuff for Saget is good, but the lead up to it was awesome too.

polyphonic, Sunday, 24 August 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

ladies and gentlemen... this man is for the birds!

max, Sunday, 24 August 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

I also liked the comeback to the obscure Jim Norton joke: "I don't think there's a person in this room who wouldn't love to watch Henry Fonda pick blueberries."

though he wasn't the "funniest", he was by far the most memorable.

Oh I dunno. I have a witness: I was losing it laughing. I had to go blow my nose and wash my face after that. I love that way that it wasn't insult comedy (Christmas seals?), but it was really the most insulting bit to everyone in the room by being a complete balls-out pisstake.

kenan, Sunday, 24 August 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

None of the people I watched with got the Norm performance. Even after explaining the gag, they still didn't think it was funny.

I may need to find a new, better set of co-workers.

milo z, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

Norm McDonald: shortlist of most underappreciated comedians.

kenan, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

the Henry Fonda line had me and my gf in tears.

rockapads, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

i watched on youtube today. norm had me laughing like crazy. and i liked gilbert's bar jokes too.

scott seward, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

i tho cloris leachman was pretty lol too

max, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

when they have the token non-stand-up at these roasts i wonder who writes their jokes. jeff ross probably.

scott seward, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

was norm pretending to be doing full house style jokes? it was funny in any case

abanana, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

Sounded to me like he has stolen some terrible comic's jokes from a sad gig in the Catskills in the 40's.

kenan, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

The main thing, though, is that he was making fun of everybody for participating in this hoary old comedy tradition that doesn't really translate.

kenan, Monday, 25 August 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

I looked up the norm clips - amazing.

Simon H., Monday, 25 August 2008 06:05 (seventeen years ago)

yeah even beyond the conceit of it he really hits all the right notes until a couple jokes near the end where he tipped his hat a bit too much

tremendoid, Monday, 25 August 2008 07:38 (seventeen years ago)

i want to see the jeff ross special. kind of.

tremendoid, Monday, 25 August 2008 07:39 (seventeen years ago)

I can't find Norm roasting Saget on YT!? Halp pls.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

Comedy Central website.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

pat saget roast parts 4 and 5 i think

Pat Sajak? Bob Saget? David Suchet?

David R., Tuesday, 26 August 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Please don't soil the Shat thread with other roasts!

there's some new pb Shat "encyclopedia" that details a lot of his douchey Star trek behavior, ie, flipping out when a reporter came to watch Nimoy's ears being put on cuz the Shat hairpiece was being glued on in the flanking chair.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

the Farrah element really has not aged well

(also there was an audience shot of David Carradine)
