horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

i only saw the second part. it was pretty good, but pretty predictable. in that half, at least, i didn't feel like i learned anything i didn't know.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

really want to see this.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

I also really want to see this. I even looked into temporarily getting HBO for it but it was prohibitively expensive. :(

Handmaiden of Hip Hop (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

I found a co-worker to tape it for me, hopefully I'll get a copy today.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

I'm presuming there'll be a DVD, like, before the midterm elections?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

boo.

I should check with my brother. he always bootleg movies before they're even released. surely he can get hbo, right?

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's very good--the first half is anger, the second is profound sadness and loss.

It's difficult to watch this and not think GWB should be impeached. What an incompetant fool, what a terrible leader.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

is it true that there was no narration, just well-edited footage speaking for itself?

ath (ath), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yes.

It was really good. Shookout OTM.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

They are showing segments this week, and then the whole thing on the weekend, right?

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

what gypsy said.

don weiner (don weiner), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm presuming there'll be a DVD, like, before the midterm elections?

I was kind of hoping there'd somehow be a theater release before the elections, but maybe that's too much to hope for.

gypsy mothra, I don't think I found out anything new watching it, but the detail was laid on really skillfully, I thought. Just gathering all the information and placing it in this inexorably paced, sickening narrative was really powerful, I thought.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

It's four and a half hours total; I don't think you're going to get a theatrical release.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

there might be a theatrical release, actually--it's playing at toronto so who knows

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

why did bush knock down the leveees?

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 24 August 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

Alicia Titsovich (sexyDancer), Thursday, 24 August 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

Fetchboy (Felcher), Friday, 25 August 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen so much cheesy angst and misdirected anger.
It was a freakin' hurricane, people - an ACT OF GOD. Time to move on.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 25 August 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

why weren't you banned a long time ago?

gear (gear), Saturday, 26 August 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen so much cheesy angst and misdirected anger.

... since you looked in the mirror

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 26 August 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

You'd think Karl Rove would have better things to do than posting on this board.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Saturday, 26 August 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

this was pretty good. watching it in all in one sitting is a bit overwhelming, but i liked the sort of improvisational or free associational flow it had. it seemed to just follow ideas wherever they led, spontaneously, and then sort of come back to the main narrative when a certain avenue was exhausted.

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 06:20 (nineteen years ago)

so if this ever makes it to torrent let me know plz.

It's already up. We d/l it and watched it last night.

I believe that cats should be incinerated, for reasons of public health, safety, and general entertainment.

argh, I don't really understand bittorrant. I r stupid.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

I was kind of interested in what people had to say about this and then ilx went down, so if you've got anything more to say, please by all means resume :)

I'm down for runnin' up on them crackers in the city hall... (papa november), Monday, 4 September 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't seen it yet. Any mention of Kanye's "George Bush doesn't care about black people" incident?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 4 September 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

yes, the clip of West saying it + Mike Myers's reaction shot is shown a couple of times, and West is interviewed as part of the movie. I think a couple of "regular people" also comment on it.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 4 September 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

More cat-hating fun:

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

Just saw the first half. Really well conceived and edited. Infuriating. The woman who apologizes once or twice for cursing is priceless. Lots of moving moments.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 14 September 2006 06:31 (nineteen years ago)

I finished the second half last night. It's well worth watching.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 September 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

where are you guys getting this?

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Thursday, 14 September 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

I had a coworker tape it for me off HBO.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 September 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Just watched the second half tonight. Squirrel Police, do you have film-watching-comprehension problems? [Controls self, barely, while reaching for the caps-lock key] Did you see the part where the Army Corps of Engineers were clearly implicated in the levees' failure?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 28 September 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

squirrel police's post on this thread is probably the top dumbest thing i have ever read on ilx.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

spike lee should make more documentaries.
I loved that they interviewed the "go fuck yourself mr cheney" dude and that he turns out to be an EMERGENCY ROOM PHYSICIAN.
also phyllis montana leblanc rules. I forgot the name of the white woman drinking a beer by the bare foundation of her friends' house who says she figures she'll get electricity to her trailer whenever she decides to give someone a blowjob but she also rules. and wynton marsalis. and bunk.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

I felt sorry for the CoE LTC putting the levees back up. Dude is in a no-win situation.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

also this is like the only spike lee joint that doesn't have a dolly shot

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

I could totally see it though: Displaced New Orleans man floats through Ninth Ward.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

yeah um

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

there were a lot of displaced new orleans folks floating through the ninth ward for a few days

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

you just reminded me I almost started to feel a little sick during the sequence of shot after shot of the bloated bodies. I rarely feel nauseated by anything but that came pretty close. I think I'd rather be burned to death than drown and float

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

there were a lot of displaced new orleans folks floating through the ninth ward for a few day

Bad choice of words on my part, but you know what I mean. Like Malcolm X floating down the sidewalk to the Audubon.

I didn't watch the whole thing. I just kept getting angrier and angrier.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

I had to watch all four hours in one sitting for fear that if I stopped at any point before the end I wouldn't be able to sleep at all. Getting to the end at least felt like some level of closure.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

Finally got to see this, pretty damn great, heartbreaking and sickening but essential viewing. Most infuriating was the part when the insurance companies screwed over people who'd been paying their subs for 50 years and used every weasel excuse to deny them their dollar. In the immediate chaos of the storm I can understand and almost forgive people making mistakes but the cold blooded way in which the insurance companies fucked people over was really sickening. Even more so since it appears that the subsequent lawsuits against them failed.
