A lot of threads skirt this, but it's never been asked directly.

Sir Dr. Rev. PappaWheelie Jr. II of The Third Kind (PappaWheelie 2), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

surely it has?

Black Hat by a hair. CB4 is pretty damn funny.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

WTF, I've never even heard of FoaBH!

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

i think black hat. just cos the dialogue is sharper, more cutting and goes straight for the jugular. the meeting they have with the record exec guy is hilarious.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

which one, the first guy, or the second guy? both soundtracks are great, with "Straight Outta Locash" vs "A Gangsta's life Ain't Fun" (or whatever). Black Hat does have tighter dialogue("Heads _totally_ exposed to the sun"), tho.

Deezer D is in both films.

kingfish trapped under ice (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Fear Of A Black Hat by a wide margin. Chris Rock hadn't really hit his stride at that point, and none of the song spoofs in CB4 can touch "I'm Just A Human Being" or "Come And Pet The P.U.S.S.Y.".

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

haha CB4 was the first time I ever saw Gibby Haynes' face, he looked exactly like I thought he did.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

CB4 was on VH1 last night and seemed really stiff to me... even tho I haven't seen FofaBH in years I'd give it the edge. Rusty's a funny dude - funnier than Chris Rock for me, plus much respect for his work with Chappelle's Show (which is pretty much funnier than 9/10ths of Chris Rock's material).

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

WTF, I've never even heard of FoaBH!

You're missing out. Great stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I think Nickalicious would dig Black Hat. I haven't seen it in aaaaages, though.

Fear of a Black Hat. Top 5 movies ever, no question.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

I never saw "Fear of a Black Hat". I roffled a lot at "CB4", though.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

I never saw "Fear of a Black Hat".

!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

CB4 is good fun too but I still annoyedly remember a promo interview that Today did with Chris Rock and Phil Hartman -- they spent almost their entire time talking to Phil Hartman about his Clinton impersonation. I'm thinking to myself, "HELLO, is it THAT hard to talk to Chris Rock about the actual reason why both of them are there?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Fear... is better as a madcap spoof kinda dealie, CB4 playing it a little bit more straight-faced. I like 'em both, but: CB4.

Tasty Taste: This is a bazooka, see? And you just pick this up like this. It's-it's-it's-it's kind of heavy. But I figured if I couldn't pick it up, I need to have it.
Nina Blackburn: Why would you need a bazooka?
Tasty Taste: Well, sometimes you gotta take out stuff like a bus or a building, or a *bunch* of muhfuckas.

nickalicious, Monday, 10 March 2008 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

Ice Cold: You know, so by the time they got back to the plantation from being in all the heat, they was too tired to rebel against their masters, right? So what we saying with Niggaz With Hats is, "Yo, we got some hats now, muh-fuckers."
Tasty Taste: And we ain't too tired to bust a cap in yo ass.

Do I look like the kind of person who could KILL A WHOLE BUNCH OF WHITE MOTHERFUCKERS? I mean, yeah, given a reason, but not on a humbug.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Sunday, 14 September 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

whoever said Fear didn't age well is wrong as all hell. Just because it's about a period of rap that isn't really relevant anymore doesn't mean it isn't still funny.

If I could fucking FIND my copy, I'd be watching it right now.

Officer, I Just Shot Seven People (Bo Jackson Overdrive), Sunday, 14 September 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

Kurt Loder was one of the best cameos in that movie, too.

Ice Cold: But see actually that shit was suppose to be "NWH: Fear Of A Black Hat," subtitled "Don’t Shoot ‘Til You See The Whites."

Nina Blackburn: Of their eyes?

Ice Cold: Whose eyes?

I wonder if Fear is funny if you weren't paying attention to 90s rap. I wouldn't know. But you wouldn't get jokes like Parsely, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, or Ice's son rapping upside down, etc if you weren't, like, watching Rap City and Video Music Box circa 90-93. I'm not sure kids born after '85 would even know who 'Kriss Kross' is. Maybe I'm wrong.

A movie that somehow gets funnier every time you see it (like all great comedies - Spinal Tap, Half Baked, most of the Christopher Guest films...)

"And this is mama, Ree-Ree."
"REBECCA."

Also, the scene in the classroom. "How you gonna be a hard ass, OG gangsta editin' the yearbook?"

Classic beyond classic.

'Now that's fly. That's pretty live with all them cops with their butts up in the air like that. And us standing over them. Right, Friesch?'

'Hang on a second. What, exactly? How many cops on the pile?'

"Fifteen."

'Fifteen. And you want?'

"None."

'None? Why don't we split the difference? Seven.'

"No. That's not going to solve the problem."

"That was not good: Kicking the record company guy's ass. That was counter-productive."

"They say it's the quiet ones that you have to watch out for."
'And, if you've noticed, I ain't said shit for a couple minutes now.'

"Are these guns registered with the state?"
'State of siege!'

"the media was trying to say that the people looting was lazy and didn't want to work. But I tell you what, you try carrying a leather sofa...all the way from Slauson and Crenshaw...down to Pico or Venice or somethin' like that..and then going back for the matching end tables.

That's some work for your ass."

always bothered me how there was a MC Hammer parody character named MC Slammer, and then at another point in the film, the record exec asks them "can't you guys just dance around like Hammer", implying that both fake MC Hammer and real MC Hammer exist in this world
