Wish I could go for 3 days to see a dozen or so of these 352, but not likely:

The new Guy Maddin feature is there, plus "Borat" at midnight.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

i'm planning my itinerary already... the publicist emails are coming fast and furious.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

damn you! :)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

it's my first year ever with official accreditation!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, new Verhoeven, I had no idea!

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

me neith!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man, thank god for the movie industry and the crazy words that have come from it - ie "starrer" (as in "[movie], the Reece Witherspoon starrer").

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

"shingle"

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

i just spent an hour typing film screening times into ical... i predict total nervous breakdown by day 3

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

No... good nerv-break test is seeing 35-1/2 features in 9 days, like I did three years ago.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Huh, Sarah Polley directed a film based on an Alice Munro story. Bet the Canadians are excited about that.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

(kills self)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in a short film that's playing in the "Short Cuts" category, so I'll be going, if only for two and a half days. PLEASE let there be a screening of "The Fountain" during that period!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 August 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

trying to plan for this is driving me INSANE. there's like 30 (no exaggeration) press screenings on thursday ALONE.

ARGH.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

As I wish I was there, no sympathy! Looks like I have Lynch tix for NYFF, tho.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

INLAND EMPIRE is ready?!!!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

One of these years, I'll make an effort at getting press accreditation. If, by some weird chance, they give it to me, I'll go.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

and if you go, you should see some movies while you're there!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I'd ever do the full length of the fest again; sensory overload. Eric, you should go for at least 4-5 days some year, accredited or not.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

it's all about deauville, mens.

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

and if you go, you should see some movies while you're there!

That's way not my style.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

how were Maddin and Shortbus, s1locki?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

the maddin was great. really entertaining, i was surprised at how much i liked it, it got better as it went along. live narrator/foley/orchestra was great too. there were some technical glitches in the beginning but ultimately they didn't detract. really fun.

and you know what, i was skeptical but i ended up really going for shortbus, it's a very likeable and funny movie. very sweet. i'm a shortbus supporter.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

i've seen:

wind that shakes the barley
volver
il caimano
shortbus
the host
borat
brand upon the brain!
lights in the dusk (kaurismaki)
for your consideration
the lives of others
primo levi's journey
bliss
sharkwater

in 20 mins i'm going to this, and at 8:30 i got this.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

consensus seems to be "minor Kaurismaki."

My friend who goes every year really misses the old theater they razed after '03. Any nice new venues?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

it is minor... but nice.

there are a couple of new(ish) venues this year but so far i've only been in the varsity, the cumberland (both "classic" TIFF) and the elgin (lovely old theatre).

i just made the AM-PM mistake with "rescue dawn" :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

oops!

I remember seeing K Kurosawa's jellyfish movie at 9 a.m.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

gift bags this year are teh suck. i got a bottle of fabric softener in one.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

For a sequel to My Beautiful Laundrette?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

haha there actually is a kureishi movie here! but no. for the HELLO! party!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, Kureishi is the Peter O'Toole Oscar bait film, right?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

yeah! venus.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

syndromes and a century by Apichatpong Weerasethakul... absolutely my favourite movie so far.

http://www.e.bell.ca/filmfest/2006/films_schedules/films_description.asp?id=298

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

So the new Maddin was there after all? I kept skimming the papers but didn't see any references to it. Not that I could have gotten a ticket, I'm sure.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

WARNING WARNING DO NOT SEE "PENELOPE"

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

However, I am really looking forward to Dong.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

actually Chris, if you show up on the standby line early enough at the TIFF you can get into almost anything but a H'wood megaproduction. That's how I saw Saddest Music 3 years ago.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

syndromes and a century
starter for ten
american hardcore
[go for ridiculous dinner w/italian directors & industry types where i'm like the only english-speaker at the table]
that john waters stand-up thing
colossal youth

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

How was the Maddin? Did you see it w/ live orchestra, foley?

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

i got a bottle of fabric softener in one.

"i got a rock"

wow, worst swag ever

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Thursday, 14 September 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

Unless it was part of the Borat gift bag.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 September 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458328/

fyi, Verhoeven's also announced to be working on a flick about the Bataan Death March

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 14 September 2006 04:15 (nineteen years ago)

what happened to verhoeven's jesus movie?

also
did shortbus have an entire hidden camera soundtrack
how were the politics of wind...compared to his other films, and was it obliquley mdoern, and were there hotties in uniform
did you go to the borat screening that failed to function or the later one at the elgin
was the john waters thing this film is not yet rated and if so, was it one of those impressionistic free floating things like moore and do you want fries with that, or was it more substantial. also how did they handle the queer content

and have you met my friend rachel, shes the sexiest woman there

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 14 September 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

Syndromes have North Amer distrib yet? Maybe in a week.

Eric's idol Sicinski was disappoined in Maddin, and he usually likes him ... thought Nuri Bilge Ceylan's (Distant) new one was ace tho.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 September 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

^ and considers Fay Grim a Hartley comeback! ^

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 September 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

fay grim was so fucking awful

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

...saw it this morning. so bad.

anyway... i mostly liked the verhoeven a lot except for two plot points that were so stupid they pretty much ruined the movie for me. still it was a fun screening... thru some publicist magic i ended up sitting like ten feet from young hoev (and the very foxy star).

as for anthony's questions:

1) no, there was a lot of animal collective
2) yes defly obliquely modern... and really sad
3) went to a borat press screening, so neither
4) the john waters thing is called "this filthy world" and it's basically a 90 min stand-up act about his obsessions and movies. quite funny. and quite queer.
5) no i haven't met rachel

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

you should meet rachel, shes a hoot

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 14 September 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

coming into the final stretch here... it's been a super-fun week although i realize what a freaking noob i am to the tiff thing

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 September 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

You didn't mention seeing Alatriste, but have you heard much buzz about it?

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 14 September 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

no i haven't. what do you know about it?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 September 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

"Dark, bloody, depressing" from one source; apparently "painterly," as in they studied Velasquez very carefully in the design; I heard there was a 10-min. standing O after the TIFF screening the other night, but this is coming to me 3rd hand via my wife, a Viggophile who hangs out online with a bunch of other Viggophiles, so, like, grains of salt.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

wow, a sort-of microremake of Short Cuts, ie one Carver story (I liked Lantana OK):

http://www.e.bell.ca/filmfest/2006/films_schedules/films_description.asp?id=164

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 September 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that's supposed to be good! didn't catch it though.

last night i saw severance, which was a pretty fun the office-meets-deliverance slasher in the midnight madness programme. great crowd too. i'm interviewing the guy in an hour. oh shit, i should get going!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 15 September 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

wow that's a good choice for a carver adaptaton. it's quite a strange story for him though.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 15 September 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

if you just accepted the numerous coincidences rather than questioning them Lantana was very good. great performances

jed_ (jed), Friday, 15 September 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)
