Reading books because a movie adaptation will be coming out: C or D?

Inspired in part by the "A Scanner Darkly" thread, and partly by my decision to give "No Country for Old Men" a go because the Coen Bros. are doing it. Oh, and because I really like "Blood Meridian," but that was definitely a secondary consideration.

Oh yeah, I just finished Ellroy's "The Black Dahlia" for this reason, too. So I'm on the C side, obv. Anything that gets me off my ass and into a decent couple hundred pages is C.

essentially, if it's a book you've always meant to get to, you gotta do it cuz the film could be shit and then the book is kinda poisoned for you.

I can't think of an instance where I've ever done this. H-wood mostly seems to adapt things I read 10+ years ago.

dunno if C or D, but isolating the impulse is C

i did this with "scanner darkly" and was glad to have read the book first. but i think having the book too fresh in your head can be a detriment to experiencing the movie as a movie. maybe the best is to have read the book long enough ago that you just remember the gist of it, the feel of it, etc. but obviously it's hard to plan that.

I sometimes do this so I can buy a book before it's only available with a cheesy movie cover.

I'm thinking about reading The Prestige.

I'm thinking about doing this with Atomised. But I've always been wary about Houellebecq, and have a long list of other things that I need or want to read, so... not sure.

Oh yeah, I also got a Peleccanos out from the library because of the new season of the Wire.
