Secret Cappuccinos, you guys!

The sales assistants know what the drink is and they have a little button on their cash tills to ring it up. It's cheaper than the other drinks on offer, but it doesn't appear on the menu.

Starbucks claims that's because they don't have room on the menu board. Coffee Republic doesn't even have that excuse: there's a blank space with no price where this drink should be listed.

It's called the "short cappuccino", and it's smaller, cheaper and better than the smallest size on the menu, the "tall".

I don't understand why they bother having a product they don't want to sell though... don't make sense - Why have it at all?

For people who say "I don't want a big one", shop say "wait, don't go. Tell you what..."

The other "Secret" product I found out about was when there was a "let's order from McD" initiative, and someone wanted a McRib.

Me: "They don't still do those!"
Person: "They do, you have to ask"

So I go to shop, nothing anywhere about it.

We got it.

I'm really curious as to what other secret things you can get in shops and restaurants.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

me too. i wonder if there's a site or something?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Some pound shops will give you things for 99p if you ask. They've usually got a load of them in the back room.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

is that article trying to do the same thing as starbucks? it's point is about as hidden as the secret cappucino: it's there - you just have to prize it out.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Is it better because there's a higher coffee to milk ratio?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

I can tell you the story.
IN THE BEGINING - three sizes - short, tall , grande - then the american public demanded a bigger size and starbucks was only too happy to oblige, thus Venti (20oz, "twenty" in Italian) - eventually no one ever ordered short, so they took it off the menu, but left the cups and button for older customers.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 25 August 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

I just got a Venti the other day and had to pour it out on the sidewalk. Totally useless. About a teaspoon of coffee in it.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 25 August 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

you can get two shots in a tall - thats the best

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 25 August 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

A cappucino is supposed to be close to equal parts espresso, milk and foam. The very idea of a Venti is absurd, especially in one of those tall, narrow cups.

is a "short" starbucks cup what they give you when you order a shot of espresso or whatever? that's the only size cup i ever get there!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 25 August 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

IBM did it with a printer: the economy version for home users was simply the top-of-the-range model with a chip in it to slow it down.

I like the idea that the cheaper printer was actually more expensive to make (regular printer+slow-down-chip > regular printer).

I'm pretty sure it's what they give you for a doppio (but is there a smaller cup for a single shot?).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 25 August 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

dunno. i always get a double espresso anyway, if i'm going to starbucks.. supersize me! in the smallest cup!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 25 August 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

what the fuck is up with having to have vanilla in your hot chocolate, starbucks?
