VANCOUVERXORS - We're visiting Sept 11-17. FAP?

I also mentioned on the other Vancouver thread (that's dropped off new answers somewhere), but I and my very soon to be legally entwined, Zac (you all know him as Rufus 3000 aka that rogue bastard, Mr Noodles) will be there for a few days to take in the sights, visit the record stores, drink, eat some seafood, etc. I'm sure we'll find lots to occupy ourselves in any case, but I don't get many chances to travel, so if you've got any advice (this is our first trip way out WEST) and/or feel like or meeting up with us, it could be fun. We'll be staying at the Metropolitan hotel, which I believe is right downtown.

I think we already have a yes from new resident, Huck, but is anyone else up for it?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 27 August 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'd fly up if I could, it's a good spot. Anyway, calling Mr. donut...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 August 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

He's in Seattle that weekend ain't he?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, probably now that you mention it, Decibel fest or something of the sort. (He's normally in Seattle anyway, of course!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 August 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

maybe! i should be in town.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, rock and roll is keeping me south of the border that week.

11th: Melvins/Big Business
13th: Nomeansno
14th-17th: Decibel Festival 2006
15th: Mission Of Burma
16th: Scratch Acid

There's a chance I might be in Toronto, Montreal, Québec (city), and Fredericton sometime next year though.

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

oh, and Winnipeg and Halifax too

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Sunday, 27 August 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

(why does ilxor shot words?)

also Calgary and Edmonton too.. it's going to be a full cross-Canadian bus/train vacation. that's the plan for next year's vacation, if I can make it happen.

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Monday, 28 August 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

So... that means I shouldn't bother coming to Toronto then?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 28 August 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, you totally should.

Ned, i can't believe that you won't fly up for us. we're getting thousands of miles closer than usual, and don't you have some money to burn? man, i spent those four arduous minutes photoshopping your head onto a lamb, and now look at the thanks I get!

Kim (Kim), Monday, 28 August 2006 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

;_;

(I'll just have to go to Toronto at some point, then. ;-) )

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 August 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

I meant, the week when you're in Vancouver, Kim! Unless you really meant that I should visit while you're gone!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 28 August 2006 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

oh. no. i did not mean that. you mean you would actually rearrange your travel sched to hang out with us fools? wait - did we know you were coming to Toronto anyway? why didn't i know that!?

Kim (Kim), Monday, 28 August 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ferdericton?!? You got a eye on the Lord Beaverbrook Gallery or doing something at UNB? You're better off getting off the train at Moncton or Sackville (the secret rock capital of Canada) then hanging arounbd the provincal capital.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I have cousins in Fredericton who desperately asked to see me after we met at my other cousins' family reunion in Victoria (which is much closer to me.) It's only fair.

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

Well I haven't actually decided whether to do it yet or not, is the thing.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Fair but unfortunate.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Word 'em up!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 28 August 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

PS, anybody got job or apt for me in Vancity?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 28 August 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

I have no info to offer, but I will say congratulations!

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 August 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

and I will say thanks!

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 3 September 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

only one week away!

(got work--too much, maybe--but still looking for cheap but clean & quiet apt)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 September 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

answer your email you, you, you... uh....... (too tired to think of anything provocative)

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

hey ok - this is soon! can someone who actually lives there or knows the city suggest a good place to meet up?

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Safe Injection Site?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

last night I saw Nouvelle Vague, and I kept wondering why their name sounded so familiar since I quite obv. hadn't heard of them before. NOW I KNOW!

Anyway, I'm on Commercial, near a SkyTrain, so I'm good FOR ANYWHERE (except W. 4th, cuz I don't really know where that is). And I don't like Granville St that much.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

omg. i'm such a Vancouver noob that that post tells me barely anything at all. maybe you should just come get drunk from our hotel minibar.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

Somewhere in Gastown? What day of the week is the 11th? I might be around, but I'm usually wracked with social anxiety, so I don't know.

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 7 September 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

11th is Monday, probably not a good day since we will have been up since 3am Pacific Salmon Coast Time.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 7 September 2006 00:21 (nineteen years ago)

to hell with social anxiety. that's where the "pint" part of FAP comes in really handy.

maybe next thurs or friday night would work best (as we may actually have begun to get our bearings by then)

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 7 September 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, maybe it's because I'm such a sporadic poster on ILX I'd feel like a fraud or something, an ILXimpost0r! I'll keep checking this thread, though. I live a ways outside of the city, but any excuse to down pints downtown I generally take.

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

there are very few good places to drink in town :( i'll think it over, though, and try to post suggestions. railway club, perhaps? i generally just drink at home or at friends' places, to save the expense.

i am also near the commercial skytrain! rock. i'm a bit of an ILXimpost0r too.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 7 September 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

I like the Rwy Club! I have been there more than any other place! With different people each time!
I think I'm available any evening.
Srsly folks, any help finding a decent, cheapish apt???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 7 September 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

Huk, I've been paying attention to your need for an apartment, but I'm drawing a blank so far. What part of town? Suburbs near a Skytrain? Definitely apartment not house share? I don't live right in Van anymore, but I still come into town and know a few people and could ask around.

David A. (Davant), Friday, 8 September 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

I miss you guys.

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Friday, 8 September 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

ok, railway club, then? thursday or friday are better for me.

one of the best neighbourhoods for transit/amenities/no yuppies/cheap apartments is hastings-sunrise, i.e. north of hastings st. between victoria and renfrew. just walk north from hastings along garden st. (one blk west of nanaimo st.) and you'll see tons of 3-4 story apartments. lots of vacancies, quiet neighbourhood, but only a few blocks from buses on hastings/dundas/nanaimo that will take you anywhere.
the neighbourhood is at a tension point between gentrification or absorption of downtown eastside refugees from gastown gentrifcation, but right now it's a lovely place. i moved to trout lake, off commercial drive two years ago, but still miss living in sunrise.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 8 September 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

we're going to be mostly offline for the next few days (kinda slightly busy with the whole getting married thing), but that sounds like a plan. hooo ray! we'll take our laptop with us to van in any case.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

this ilxmpostor is also down for railway club.

Sym Sym (sym), Friday, 8 September 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'll give it a go too. Railway Club is a good call. Vancity has the most reticent FAPs! Thursday might be slightly better for me, but Friday could also work. Too bad Donut can't be here (or Ned) -- I've never met either of them, but their online personas are eerily likeable!

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 9 September 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

thanks so much for the tip David A!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 9 September 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

hey huk, i'm giving up my cheap and main st. located one brdm at the end of the month. e-mail me if you're interested.

Sym Sym (sym), Saturday, 9 September 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

done!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 9 September 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

so, thursday at the railway club?? what time is good?

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 10 September 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

ok, we're getting on the plane in about 6 hours - must sleep, at least a little. see you guys on thursday!

Kim (Kim), Monday, 11 September 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

WHAT TIME IS GOOD???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

huk, i am going visit you when i come back to vancouver at christmas (if i come back for christmas) simply b/c vancouver does not have regular faps and even though i don't know you well nor live in vancouver, i am from there and feel i need to do my part. sayin'/warning.

my bro just got a new place at main and 4th. he said there were A LOT of people wanting it - i guess b/c that's the new hip place to be... eesh. i say the lofts/apts there are a bit pricey and you can find other places (1 bdrms and shared places) in the main corridor area (from broadway way up to 28th or so) for decent prices. i am partial to that area myself and used to live just north-west of main and broadway.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

We saw the railway club today. We were eating breakfast/lunch across the street.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 11 September 2006 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, there's some cool bands playing at the Railway on Thurs. I'd probably be there anyway.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

8-9pm good? but not knowing the city, we're not sure when things get going around town (in toronto early starts are pretty normal, but i hear montrealers won't go out until later)

oh, and what do you fools look like? =)

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

argh.
might be late. apt-hunting SUCKOS.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Huk, you do not look like that.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

I look generally like that, in that I am a male with glasses and a face and a short-sleeved shirt.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

so am I! except my shirt is long-sleeved. I hope to make it tonight, but if I don't, raise an extra pint for me.

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'll probably be arriving late and leaving early. Lots of work tomorrow. Cripes, this is just the opposite of every other adventure I've had, where work is a bane and a pox, and living is cheap and plentiful. There's a lesson here, I'm sure.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 14 September 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

today i am wearing a red checked short-sleeved shirt and beige corduroy pants. i will also probably have on a navy-blue jacket.. kind of a 'hoodie' with no hood, w/ a CBC logo on the front.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 15 September 2006 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

Stupid rain and construction on the sea to sky, we are running late.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 15 September 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

How did this go? I had the proverbial week from hell, was offline for two days and was hoping (forlornly) you'd all switched to Friday (today). Really pissed off that I missed it.

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 16 September 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

The Buttless Chaps were good.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 16 September 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Denny's = never again.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 16 September 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

im there on the rememberance day long weekend

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 16 September 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

Dennys?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 17 September 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I was in a Denny's (or Dennys, I'm also not sure!) in Port Coquitlam recently. Did you go there -- the Burrard Street one -- after the Railway Club, Huk?

(Also, Vancouver-Seattle co-FAP would be very cool, yes.)

David A. (Davant), Sunday, 17 September 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Derrick took us there after the Railway. Beer + Denny's does not = pleasant farts the following day. Luckily, where I work, I never have to take the blame for bad smells.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 17 September 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

That wasn't true of the last place you worked either.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 17 September 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

denny's is always awful! there is very, very little avaliable in downtown for food after midnight, though, so there you go.

i realised the next morning that there is a 24-hr tim hortons just across the street from the railway. we could have had soup and sandwiches. fuckin' denny's.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 17 September 2006 07:41 (nineteen years ago)

heheh. we'll keep that in mind for the next time (which, looking at our finances, likely won't be for a very, very long time)

we had a great time though. just got back tonight. did you guys hear about the huge delays at the van airport? some kind of security breach happened (like, an abandoned bag or something?) and they shut everything down. fun.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 18 September 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

might not be homeless!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 18 September 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

NOT HOMELESS (but paying more than I intended)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 18 September 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

hurrah for having a home!

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

boo for paying more than intended.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

oh, excellent! where?

did not hear abt the airport.. how was capilano?

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

We skipped that for a hike around Grouse Mountian instead. Was wonderful and very tiring.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

nr Fraser & B'way - far from ideal in every way, but eminently workable.
My brother has been hassling me to grind the grouse with him, but, um, I SMOKE CIGARETTES FULE.

Today is my first day where I neither have to work nor work to find a place to live. I'm utterly bored.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

well we did take the cable car 90% of the way up, so i suppose we're not that impressive. hiking in the Don Valley didn't exactly prepare us.

still bored? come to Toronto. no Denny's - we promise.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

oh and, (ta da!) Vancouver FAP photos:

Kim (Kim), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

what the hell did i find so interesting in the down direction?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 22 September 2006 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe you're just camera shy?

Derrick looks to have some serious lank going on.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 22 September 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, he's 9 feet tall and largely composed of aluminum.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 22 September 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, what the hell were you and Zac trying to do in that first one? i mean, i was right there and i haven't got the slightest clue.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 22 September 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

we were being all white and nerdy.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 23 September 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'M BORED.
What is happening?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

they opened a new entrance to the granville skytrain station. it kinda made my week!

have you moved yet?

yes, serious lank. 6'1 and 145 lb or something. i have bad circulation in my feet as a result.. they get really hot or really cold. but i do like being tall.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

i have keys, but there's still a dude in my place until today or tomorrow. COUCH SURFING ENDS AT LAST.
Ooooh, I might have to go downtown and check that new SkyTrain entrance out. Or I could sit on the drive and eat sweets all day. Again. (i'm turning into a fatty)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Huk, I had no clew you were moving to Vansterdamn.
I feel snubbed!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

aw, i miss vancouver already. six days was just long enough to start feeling comfortable there and i keep having the urge to go back to steamworks brewing for another salmon wellington. crap. why the fuck is it so far away?

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

if i had more money, i would go to steamworks more often. alternately, if my class across the street at harbour centre ended at 7.30 pm instead of 2.30 pm, i'd probably go there just due to proximity.

i wish i had time to be bored! i am only bored in my ottoman empire lectures. i'm getting really snobby for seminar courses, where we can argue and banter. sitting w/ 60 other students in a hall just puts me to sleep now.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 28 September 2006 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

Lecture's aren't that bad, just give in to your inner Selim II.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry Thermo!

I'm not bored now! I've got my place and I'm working nearly every day (which is lunacy) and I've got a lot to do to make my new home homey-like. (mostly make weak-ass gang symbols with my hands)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 28 September 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

NEWSFLASH: I HATE MY NEW PLACE.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Argh, no, I am all about lecture classes. I am annoyed that the two classes I thought were going to be lecture classes are getting a bit chatty.

Anyway, I will probably be in Vancouver sometime this fall. But I don't know when. I thought it was going to be Victoria, but it will be Vancouver. So. Tidy the place up for me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOUR NEW PLACE, HUK.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Chris, come to Seattle when Jaq has her housewarming fap.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

I will probably be there for the unpacking party, I think? I dunno if that's the same thing.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 28 September 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

yeah unpacking. i'm trying to talk her into shelving her books by color, but i don't think she's having it.

sorry for the derail VANCXors. i love you.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 28 September 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

small, shitty, dirty, noisy, NOT CLEANED OR EVEN EMPTIED after last tenant vacated. I mean, there's MILK in the FRIDGE.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 28 September 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

did u drink it?

jergins (jergins), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

was there any hobo-rum?

Vim with bleach + 200 bucks at IKEA can mostly fix your apt.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 29 September 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

Are there laws about what they're required to do?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 29 September 2006 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

I called the landlord and told him I'm not accepting tenancy of the place until it's been cleaned and gave him a checklist of crap that needs to be done before I assume any liability/responsibility for the place.
Also told him I'm very disappointed in him, as he seemed like such a nice young man.
On my way out was offered crack on the corner.
I am so breaking my lease.
