Of definite interest to JBR & Gareth, and possible interest to every other geography fan on ILX, I noticed that Flickr finally added in built-in support for geocoding your photos.

Hey, nice. So that supplants that earlier applet, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 August 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

i read that as "built-in genociding"

Yes it does. I'm vaguely annoyed that it uses Yahoo's map database instead of Google's, but I like the Flickr interface for adding photos several hundred times more.

I love that Flickr made it easy to convert your previously geocoded photos into the Flickr system.

Boy, the map part of the whole thing is flaky. How do you control scrolling properly?

Sampling of mine.

Oh man, I did NOT need this. One more excuse to waste away hours moving little photo icons around on Flickr. Sigh. BUT WHEN I'M DONE MY PHOTOS WILL MAKE A BEAUTIFUL CONSTELLATION ACROSS ATHENS GEORGIA, MY GOODBYE PRESENT TO YOU MY CITY!

six months pass...
So, being both a geographer and amateur photographer, naturally I love this feature. But I mapped this picture of a dead cardinal I took yesterday and it placed it in Barbara, Arkansas. THERE IS NO SUCH PLACE AS BARBARA, ARKANSAS! It also did the same thing to a couple other photos I mapped, making them appear to have been taken in McNair and Junction, AR, neither of which I have heard of. And you can't edit it. What's this all about.
