Dead...as a Dando?

(That was the worst meme ever and that was before memes were invented.)

Eazy-Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

But seriously tho, Barry George, what a stitch up

Ich Ber Ein Binliner (Dada), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

can you elaborate? i have next to zero memory of the whole thing.

i'm not teh_kit, ffs! (g-kit), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

g-kit google have just launched google news archive today

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not teh_kit, ffs! (g-kit), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

"Results 1 - 1 of 1 for barry george what a fucking stitch up."

i'm not teh_kit, ffs! (g-kit), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

It was on the telly last night!

Doubts over times and whether it was actually physically possible for him to have been there to carry out the murder.

One fucking microscopic fragment of gun residue that was found in one of his coat pockets - but which PROPER experts (i.e. not Met experts) say could have come from anywhere) and anyway might not have had anything to do with the gun that killed Jill Dando.

About 20 odd people failed to pick him out in identity parades, two people did:

1. A woman who subsequently changed her description of the murderer
2. A woman who didn't recognise him at first but then changed her mind having had a conversation with Woman 1 in the back of a police car AND who ended up having an affair with the police officer in charge of the case!

Plus lots of dodgy stuff in the jury room etc etc etc

Ich Ber Ein Binliner (Dada), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

was he an obsessive or something? i forget most of this.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for that. i missed the show.
were there any theories on who actually did it? Princess Di?

yeah, if memory serves, he was obsessed with her.

i'm not teh_kit, ffs! (g-kit), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

the tv show about it (channel 4? four years ago?) CONVINCED me he had fuck all to do with it.

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, if memory serves, he was obsessed with her.

He was a creepy weirdo and an obsessive - but absolutely not about Jill Dando. The police found over 800 old newspapers at his (manky) flat of which exactly EIGHT had articles about Jill Dando and none of them had been cut out or scrawled over or drooled on the way creepy weirdo obsessives normally do

Ich Ber Ein Binliner (Dada), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Fulham Palace Road is noticeably bereft of grassy knolls, even when you get to the Bishops Park end.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

he was a creepy obsessive about freddie mercury wasn't he?

more excellent detective work from the met, fit up the local looney YOU SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGS

The Real DG (D to thee G), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

He was a creepy obsessive about women in general, he just claimed to be related to Fred... so nothing creepy or obsessive there!

Ich Ber Ein Binliner (Dada), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently, he went back to his local Citizens Advice Bureau to 're-establish' an alibi, as he'd already been nearly fitted up interviewed about the Rachel Nickell case.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

no one made a funny about "g-kit have you been SEARCHING PORTSMOUTH have just launched GOOGLE news archive SYSTEM today" or something yet.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

maybe Jill felt The Power and BG was jealous.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

Have the Bee Gees been questioned yet?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

The prog last night certainly raised enough reasonable doubt abt the George conviction, although I think he remains the most likely culprit - the combination of George's local proximity, women/celebrity obsession AND gun nut tendencies certainly suggests he was CAPABLE of killing Jill Dando (it does seem significant that it was a 'friend' who told police that George might be the Rachel Nickell killer. some years prior to the Dando murder.)

If he is at some point pardoned/released, will the police ever arrest/apprehend another likely suspect?

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

But seriously tho (again)... he has to walk at the end of this trial, anything else would be a travesty.

Tom D., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

It's always be a story about Bobby George to me

Tom D., Thursday, 15 November 2007 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

Gentle pretty thing
Who only had one spring
You bravely faced the world
Ready for anything
I'm happy that you lived
For your life is mine
What have I except to cry
Spirit never die
Birds of the air
Beasts of the earth
Overjoyed at Dando's birth they gambolled in the glade

Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?

Murder murder murder
Someone should be angry
The crime of the century
Who shot little Dando
Never trust a hippie
'Cause I love punky Dando
I'll kill to find the killer
In that rotten roll army
All the spikey punkers
Believers in the ruins
With one big shout
They all cry out
Who killed Dando?
Who?

Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?

Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?
Who killed Dando?

onimo, Thursday, 15 November 2007 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

No, Nathaniel
Oh no Jill Dando!
No, Jill Dando, no
There must be more to life
There has to be a way
That we can restore to life
The love we used to know
Jill Dando, no
There must be more to life
There has to be a way
That we can restore to life
The light that we have lost

one month passes...

Barry George has been found not guilty of murdering BBC television presenter Jill Dando outside her London home.

Mr George, 48, of Fulham, west London, denied shooting 37-year-old Miss Dando on her doorstep on 26 April 1999.

He is expected to be released later and walk free from the Old Bailey after spending eight years in prison.

Frogman Henry, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

Eight years for being a creepy loner. Fucking shocking. I wonder how many coppers knew they had the wrong guy from the start.

onimo, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

The Met Police said it would reflect on George's acquittal and "consider how best to proceed".

Commander Simon Foy, head of Scotland Yard's homicide and serious crime command, said: "We are disappointed by today's verdict but especially disappointed for Jill's family and friends. However, we respect the decision of the court."

Well, at the moment they seem to be in denial. They probably still think they got the right guy. I met West Mids police officers in the mid 90s who still thought the Birmingham 6 were guilty and got off on a technicality.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

The technicality being that that were not guilty.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

In 1981, George somehow persuaded a stadium in Derby to stage a stunt in which he jumped over a row of double decker buses on his rollerskates. The stadium sold hundreds of tickets for the event. At the last moment, having seen the platform and ramp which had been constructed, George tried to back down but plucked up courage and managed to complete the leap.

onimo, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

Dad, everyone's sick of that story!
