Battlestar Galactica Season 3

I still can't find a b!tt0rr3nt for The Wire S4E1, but my OCD-like searching of bittorrent sites has revealed that the Sci-Fi network's website, http://www.scifi.com/pulse/ has begun airing a set of 'webisodes' filling in the gaps between the previous and next seasons of Battlestar Galactica. The next season proper starts in under a month!

So go for it, space nerds!

Oh, fer...can some kindly mod please google-proof the second usage of that ten-letter word up there?

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

Bah, blocke din the UK. (Well I could jiggery poke my settings I guess).

Actually not seen series two yet, so it would be a bad idea to watch anyway!

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

Actually not convinced by the googleproofing above: it does not offer offers much protection. After all ILX is the number one hit on Google for b!tt0rr3nt but in the low thousands for the actual word.

And I reckon the security people might have worked out such grade one dodges.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

it seems canadians can't view via scifi netwrk site either. but it's available by other means, obv. also: october 6! and: yaaay!

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Thursday, 7 September 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

wow, less than one month

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 7 September 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
they really just went for it, drawing in every last line of the metaphor of humans under cylon occupation as iraqis under US occupation. this is an episode in which the heroes of the last two seasons are now soliciting volunteers for suicide bombing missions.

as grim as this is, this is still just television, I was watching with friends who were saying 'how can they even get away with showing this', which was a bit of an overreaction, but this is still some serious national therapy

this show, not really just for space nerds (lacking some credibility for saying this being a space nerd, but now that this show has finally made things literal it's going to be a bit harder to ignore)

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 7 October 2006 06:03 (nineteen years ago)

Fat suit on Adama's son is silly and fake in a fucked up and pathetically ugly manner. Looks like something Michael Myers would wear.

Annoying but too late to change: Ugly filters on video making things look cold or diseased.

Urnst Kouch (Urnst Kouch), Saturday, 7 October 2006 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

why is there a second episode on torrent sites? s03e01 and s03e02

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Saturday, 7 October 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

They showed two episodes in a row last night, Alan.

Amusingly, one J. Goldberg, who has spent the last two years going on about how much he loves the series via NRO, posted something today essentially saying "Uh...I'll get back to you all on Monday."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

thanks. downloading ep02 now.

mid way in that 1st ep (when they made contact) i was reflecting on the fact that tho this is just a fantasy, a manufactured human drama, it has quite an effect on me - i care about the people here. and i'm not bothered by the relentless mood, and obv its not kickabout fun (obv). quite unusual for me to be into this. and i never expected this when it started 2 years ago (i didn't like what i saw in the trail, and i was never too keen on the original show either)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

I never thought I'd be into this show either, but it is my favorite now.

Scifi sometimes shows all day marathons of the original Battlestar as well as Battlestar 1980, and they are enjoyable as campy fun but not as much else.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed on the comedy fat suit, with the comedy waddling not helped by the constant reminders - as if every time he has a conversation with somebody they're going to end it with FATTY, as well as the close ups and LOOK NOW HE EATS SNACKS BECAUSE HE IS FAT. It's not the weight, Apollo, it's the way the fat suit doesn't work so you walk around like Mr Blobby. Ha, why did nobody do something about this?! It's so OTT. Can't actors put on weight anymore? Way to go make up dept.

Osama Bin Tigh, though.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think Tigh looks more like Omar Abdel-Rahman:

Yeah, you're not wrong! I just go for the big names, like.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

The Cylons are pretty neurotic for machines.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 8 October 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh, I totally spaced out and forget this was back. On again tomorrow night, thankfully.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 8 October 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

randomly the 2nd ep i downloaded had the credits AND the "next time" trail, which TOTALLY SPOILERED the "OMG theyz all ded" cliffhanger.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 8 October 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

yaay, i finally watched the new eps tonight!

i agree about the weird fat suit, but it seemed by the end of ep2, they were getting back into appolo's actual character rather than just relying on fat suit as character. i'm hoping he'll 'slim down' really quickly...

what most intrigued me though was the starbuck/cylon 'relationship' and that weird apartment she has to live in (which i'm pretty sure is in the building my brother lived in for 6 years until v recently! he met a few of the cast even several months ago when they were filming.) yeah, this subplot seems the most effed up and freaky, as effed as the scare The People into submission cyclon tactics are too.

i'm mostly happy to see new episodes, as much as i already miss the big space battles. (but those'll come again soon enough.)

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Monday, 9 October 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for passing on the spoilerage alan!

anyway... though i thought the 2nd half of steazon two had some REAL weak shit in it the pilot double-whammy has restored my faith. yeah it's so obv iraq but somehow it totally works. can't wait to see where they go with it and i think it was a brilliant way to keep the series from treading water.

EXCEPT

they gotta stop adding cute kids to the cast. when dude came in with starbuck's baby my heart totally sank.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

I kept thinking "please please please let Starbuck kill the baby", I think if she had, it would have been the greatest thing I've ever seen on television.

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

I so wanted her to kill the kid, or at least for the kid to be dead when it cracked its head open. I wouldn't put it past the Cylons to have a whole room full of the little fuckers just in case, though.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

fair point, sorry. tho i didn't say what the spoiler was specifically, hem hem

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

I kept thinking "please please please let Starbuck kill the baby", I think if she had, it would have been the greatest thing I've ever seen on television.

-- Hanna (hanna.fah...), Today 6:28 AM. (Hanna) (later)

me too!!

the whole baby gets hurt and starbuck gets attached thing was a little contrived.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the kid is really Starbuck's. The cylons were so desperate to get ahold of Boomer and Helo's baby that I don't think they would risk leaving a cylon/human child with someone as unpredictable as Starbuck. It is probably some blond human child that was picked off of the street.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

But surely she was faking the whole hand-holding softening-up part at the end? God I hope she was. Seems so out of character.

I wonder how they're going to let this play out - I really really don't want Starbuck to have a cylon-bastard kid running around her feet for the rest of the season. That would ruin all her cool.

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

But surely she was faking the whole hand-holding softening-up part at the end? God I hope she was. Seems so out of character.

I don't know, she's been in captivity a while and they've been messing with her head. She could be faking it or she could just be losing her mind/developing Stockholm syndrome.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

even though nothing as crazy as starbuck killing a baby went on, i still thought that kid at bottom of stairs, face down, with river of blood coming from head was disturbing...

starbuck may be freaking out and may have true feelings for the kid - she's tough not heartless, even if she has doubts about the kid being hers - but she's gotta be faking the cylon handholding. which is rad.

the actors and head writer person are rumoured to have said that this season is supposed to be BLEAK. but, uh, in a good way? hm, not sure how much disturbing and depressing i can deal with in mid-winter...

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

I MISSED THESE! WHAT CAN I DO? Stay late after work and hope no one notices in the streaming video or similar? I need to join the modern world one of these days....

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Sci-fi reruns them all of the time, so I wouldn't be surprised if they show them again this week before the new episode.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Problem is a) my schedule, b) too many people in my house and only one (1) television I can watch. But I'll try to keep up, I'm DEPENDENT on this show.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

trouble is starbuck has been incarcerated for how many months now with the creepy cylon? mentally she's fuxored. anyone see a parallel with Jack's plight in lost?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

brit explain: is it a big deal that nbc may be picking this up?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

They're one of the big broadcast networks, so yes. (Stretching the comparison here but it's a bit like a successful 'indie' band signs to a major...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Doesn't that mean that NBC are gonna be all like "Dudes! Lighten up!" ? Which would utterly ruin the whole mood (and indeed point) of the show.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

i don't want to compare battlestar to lost right now, gotta say. (i still like Lost, but they are v dif shows to me. i am also for some reason staying away from the Lost thread. can't deal.)

oh, starbuck's brains are messed up but srsly, a day or two before she holds his hand she's stabbing him in the neck with a piece of metal. she has a soft side but it's not that soft.

i really hope she gets to fly a spaceship again. and that there are more space battles soon.

xpost

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

y'know, i don't know if NBC would do that these days. I mean, The Unit is pretty gritty for network tv!

also, Laurel, do you have someone who could download/tape new eps for you? 2 fit on one cdr!

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, yes, but we're not really speaking anymore. Next!

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

we will find a way, even if i have to send from canadaiana! someone in ny must understand.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

I too wanted her to off the kid. I don't understand though why she didn't slowly torture this dude -- keep him at death's door, but not actually dead so he doesn't regenerate.

A month or two of that and he won't be so into her when he's finally reborn. PLus they remember their deaths, so he's going to remember months of excruciating pain, yo.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Last episode was pretty good, served as an efficient build-up towards the next one, where I'm hoping for some spectacular space battles. I'm thinking they'll off one of the main characters soon, and am hoping it won't be Adama. Though that Lee/Adama good-bye scene did seem suspiciously sentimental and teary.

I'm a bit confused about this business with the babies. Why is the Hera kid so much more valuable and special than Starbuck's baby? They're both supposed to be hybrids, what's the difference? Also, Starbuck's baby looks much, much older than Hera, which doesn't really make sense.

The Tigh/Ellen scene where he found out she was the traitor was great. Loved Tighs one-eyed face and expression.

Didn't really like the beginning of the episode, when they were in the woods, the whole settings looked so amateurish.

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

am still working through series 2. was watching Homicide on saturday morning and michelle forbes, the new ME turns up. watched BG on saturday afternoon and michelle forbes, the new admiral, turns up. funny.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

Hurrah: I can join the gang having caught up completely.

Reasons why Hera is special:
a) Naturally conceived (Cylon's couldn't do that)
b) Roslin doesn't know about KC
but here's the real rub...
c) KC probably isn't really Starbucks baby. As mentioned above, she is far too old, and the whole ovary harvesting thing just sounds pretty implausible She's probably just a stolen human baby.

Beginning of the episode was complete King Of The Rocket Men cheat though to save Roslin and Zarek for CERTAIN DEATH.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

Bah. That vidoe has been removed. What was innit.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone following the podcast commentaries on scifi.com? I've only listened to a couple, but the last one was funny - Ron Moore and his wife sitting in his study, bickering and giggling with a couple of cats running around their feet. He talked about how this and the next episode were supposed to be squeezed into a single one, and that they had to go back and shoot some new scenes when the decided to make two. Hence Chief's suddenly shaved-off beard!

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

OK, when people start making cakes, you have a cult hit.

That's a fun video Alan, but no Boomer love...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

! that cake idea is awesome! the cupcake fighters! (what would also be awesome is a tardis cake and dalek and cybermen cupcakes.)

it's possible that KC is starbuck's kid even though the timeline can't work (KC looks about 1.5 yrs old, maybe closer to 2.) - but maybe accelerated growth? OR maybe she is a new cylon model. crepey.

TOTAL cheat with the beginning of this episode. end of last ep: cally was totally in the woods when shots went off. but hells, it's tv and i kinda love it for doing stuff like that anyway.

i haven't yet watched the commentaries on scifi site. i'll cross that line today though, i'm sure...

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not just gonna skip Season 3 and move on to Razor/Season 4 come on now

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

nothing in s3 was as bad as Black Market

blueski, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

season 5 is pretty good but why are you guys so excited? this shit came out in the 80s. pretty corny.

jeff, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

Was "Scar" in S3? That was p terrible.

W4LTER, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

oops i meant season 3 above. scar was season 2.5 i think.

cutty, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

man you guys are harsh. I wouldn't call any of the episodes "terrible", the series in general being better than everything else on TV as well as better than 99% of sci-fi produced today, in any medium.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

horrible episodes =

black market
the one where the black guy shows up and strangles adama
boxing grievances

cutty, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

boxing!!!!

jeff, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

agreed except i liked the boxing one :/

Jordan, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

The boxing one was sweet.
And yeah "terrible" was too strong, sorry.

W4LTER, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

what about the ones where they go to the ghost town on vacation and an old prospector locks baltar in a jail cell

jeff, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

what about the one where baltar thinks he has a cylon STD

cutty, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

what about the one where adama has to talk down a cloud with father issues

Jordan, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

or the one where apollo and starbuck get sent back to 19th century england

Jordan, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

or the one where Starbuck builds a colonial fighter out of coconuts

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

i hear that in s4, there are a few episodes where they go to hawaii but they encounter a string of bad luck once apollo finds an ancient taboo idol

jeff, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

what about the one where apollo finally kills that polar bear that has been terrorizing the colonial fleet

cutty, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

s6 was really when the writers hit their stride - the plot and theme arcs really held together, some amazing high points in a consistently high-point season: the cave wars! collision with the pirates! the wedding hijinks ep! dual-star explosion - was it really "g/God"???
seriously great stuff

rrrobyn, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

series doesn't really pick up until Tighe's little cousin Oliver joins the crew and Starbuck and Apollo's adorable baby Raven is born

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

also the episode where President Roslyn has menopause

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

The final episode of Battlestar Galactica, known as "The Last One", ended in a context different from every other episode of the series. As the viewer pans away from snow beginning to fall on New Caprica, the scene changes to William Adama's autistic son Lee "Apollo" Adama, and Saul Tigh in an apartment building. Adama arrives home from a day of work, and it is clear that he works in construction from the uniform he wears and from a conversation in this scene. "Tigh" is revealed to be William's father, and thus "Apollo"'s grandfather. William laments to his father, "I don't understand this autism thing, Pop. Here's my son. I talk to him. I don't even know if he can hear me, because he sits there, all day long, in his own world, staring at that toy. What's he thinkin' about?" The toy is revealed to be a snow globe with a replica of Old Caprica inside. "Apollo" shakes the snow globe, and is told by his father to come and wash his hands. William Adama places the snow globe on the family's television set and walks into the kitchen and the camera closes in on the snow globe.

i liked this one OK

dow, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

> thanks. the real issue here though is that this dvd is $38.99 on amazon.com. must be msrp?

i paid nearly as much in pounds. still, was much cheaper than subscribing to sky or getting broadband installed. (series 2 did eventually end up on freeview on sky3, about a month after i got the dvds. oh um)

> i'd rather buy an American one and save £££

but they will come down in price dramatically in the next few months - series 2 was £15 when i bought it, the miniseries was a fiver (and still is)

i'm still waiting for the dagget to turn up.

koogs, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 08:39 (eighteen years ago)

My usual Amazon route is to buy it and put it up for sale in market place the same day for a quid cheaper. You get to see the full whack for about 4 quid tops that way.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

my least favorite episode is the one where it randomly turns out that the "Kat" character has a secret history of being a drug runner or some shit like that

latebloomer, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

the christmas carol themed episode where different "head 6s" are xmas past/present/future and baltar buys the biggest turkey in the shop at the end. brilliant.

the 'gay issue' one with the ressurection ship glitch.

Alan, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

Tiscali has suddenly started carrying Sky One (did you notice this Alan?) so may get to watch S4 that way (not sure how big the gap is between new episodes shown in the US and in the UK).

blueski, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

yes we noticed it a few weeks ago - been watching ST:TNG late at night. lovely. 2, 3 and arts are there too, but they were broken until v recently. is this some cheap deal from sky to spite virgin, yeah?

Alan, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

also, hurray for Lost and 24 when it's back. unless this is a mistake :-(

Alan, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

is this some cheap deal from sky to spite virgin, yeah?

i reckon so.

it will push me into a 'shall i just wait a few days so i can watch Lost on TV but with annoying breaks or shall i just download it right now' dilemma

blueski, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

somehow i miss the credits on real telly. plus recall the schism on the Lost threads about the "next time on Lost" bits :-)

also why does the sci fi channel (UK at least) never show widescreen?

Alan, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

you need to make your imagination widescreen and stop this 4:3 thinking

blueski, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

what about the episode where starbuck and athena have a push-up competition and starbuck is caught doping up on cylon blood?

(sorry, i thought about this last night and started to laugh)

So, Has anyone seen the um, highly legal version of Razor flinging its way around the web? It's really good. I still think the show never went off the boil, but anyone who wants a bit of lean, Season 1/2-style BG is going to be quite happy.

And there's also a nice bit of Season 3 style WTF-ery, so it covers all the bases really.

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 10 November 2007 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

The end was good. The bit with the talking Cylons was completely WTF, though.

Lee Adama is so blatantly the last member of the Final Five.

James Mitchell, Saturday, 10 November 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

the talking Cylons were an homage to the original series weren't they?
