suddenly it is autumntime! a chill in the air, leaves turning, people wearing scarves, covert vs overt sexuality, etc etc. and no more wearing sandals :( i will cling for as long as possible to summer but my bare feet got cold this morning and i pulled out my SLIPPERS and am now happy. they were impossible to wear for much of the hot summer - i bought them right before the weather got horribly hot, so i am experiencing them as new. here they are, exciting! (also: cats)

what's it to you about SLIPPERS?

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

i usually wear cheap slippers from chinatown b/c they are soft and i like the idea of new slippers every couple of months. but this time i felt a need for sequins.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

I love my slippers. One has a cat on and one has a dog. My cousin bought them for me because I don't like the ones with no backs on them because they make me slip when I'm going up and down the stairs.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Slippers are for GURLS

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Men wear slip-ONS, especially when they get old or are Chinese.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Those are so artsy and fab, Rob! I go for wool socks instead of slip-on slippers, the latter being a recipe for cold ankles This year I might try a really hokey pair of those sock ones with brown leather soles -- you know, all LL Beany.

The covert sexuality point is so interesting. I have a problem imagining it, I think.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Problems imagining covert sexuality? How so?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

Also I might love the cat behind the curtain, and I don't even really LIKE cats!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

(Is it not to do with hiding in bushes and night-vision goggles?)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

N: Not important, really. I just thought it was such an interesting comparison to make as it relates to slippers! Was just this morning discussing with colleague the girlhood ideal of satin mules with marabou trim and how we never got them and now we don't even really want them anymore.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever had a proper pair of slippers. Instead, when it gets chilly, I just wear woolly socks around the house, which turns out is a great way to break your neck whilst slipping on wood floors.

So maybe I'll get some slippers this year!

quincie (quincie), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Happy 9th birthday:

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly! Now they lie exclusively within the province of Charisma Carpenter's gold digging character on V Mars.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I sent that pic and caption to the colleague in question and she wrote back, "I want them." Apparently some of us are still 9!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

tapochki! i wore them at all times in russia but lost them. i should get new slippers sometime.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

Perfect!

9-yr olds wear vampy bedroom slippers? wtf?

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

No, no, I mean it's the kind of thing that only seems desirable when you're 9. Or should, anyway. Also, pink ones were included in all those pre-approved "dress up" kits that the toy magazines advertised (and we never had) along with other totally CRACKED princess gear.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

It took me a long time to figure out what I was looking at in Nabisco's photo -- I thought at first it was a Georgia O'Keeffe print or something.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, because "satin mules with marabou trim" means nothing to JMC and doesn't prepare him at all. Why would he know about mules?! ;)

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a little scared of winter this year: I've kinda recently fallen in love with the wearing of solid-colored Vans in an old-man-slipper sitting-on-park-bench style (with loose cuffed pants, with pigeons to feed), and cold weather stands to kill that one dead.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Rrob, along with slippers I call for the eating and feeding to others of stew and chili and other one-pot, slow-cooked meals, and for putting throw blankets on all chairs and couches to encourage nesting. Long live fall!

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

fall/autumn, yes! i have taken to wearing thinish scarves around my neck, half pirate-like, half old-lady fashion. now i am making lemon cake for a friend's birthday! yes, using the oven! (not used in summer) i got her some stripey wool socks :) i am wearing my slippers.

it used to be, lo when i lived on the west coast, i would wear either bare feet or socks, but there really is no choice here but to wear slippers. and in deep winter, no choice but to wear really big slippers. i need new really big slippers - the aussie kind, with wool and hide and thick soles. mine are looking SAD.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

i know why you got her socks.

Wuffy the cat-rescuing dog (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

it's because you BURNED HER OTHER SOCKS

Wuffy the cat-rescuing dog (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

y'all just need to grow some hair on yr feet and stfu

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm currently wearing sock-slippers as Laurel has shown. But this is also because I am home v. sick and wish to be comfy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

men wearing slippers seems very "old world"/euro to me, also maybe typical of older generations (kind of like wearing undershirts). am i off the mark?

good if you tend to bang your toes into things at a high rate of speed every few months

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

perhaps a smart slippers/smoking jacket combo

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

i need new ones.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

and, xpost, yes, i burn socks on wood stoves when intoxicated/distracted by fits of laughter and/or the world.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

I have spent the summer being almost inseparable from my shocking pink crocs, but I fear they're not really winter footwear so I may have to get something else to pad around the house in instead. Crocs may be hideously and embarrassingly ugly, but cor they feel great.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 07:42 (nineteen years ago)

I wish the people upstairs would wear slippers.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

Instead of hobnailed boots?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

those last pictured slipper are so cosy looking!

i wanna knit slippers!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

I have spent the summer being almost inseparable from my shocking pink crocs,

me too! Fortunately, here in Texas, I can probably get away with wearing these until xmas. I do often wear slippers around the house mostly b/c I don't like stepping on slobbery dog toys or hidden piles of cat puke unexpectedly.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Crocs are great! I have bright lavendar ones. Here in the dry they have one bad propensity though - if you wear them someplace with a polished concrete floor (like our grocery, or Costco), massive amounts of static builds up, so you are jolted every time you touch a shelf or another person wearing Crocs.

rrobyn, those beaded slippers are just divine!

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

they were really cheap too! i found them in the drugstore, of all places.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

They jolly well sound like they're wearing hobnailed boots!

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

I recognize that these are sort of awful, but I think I like them, maybe perversely. Don't they seem like the twelve dancing princesses would have worn holes in them every night?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

They seem like something Aubrey Beardsley would've worn.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

He himself, or one of his long, flowy princesses? I vote princess.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

They look like they're made out of wallpaper.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Or silk brocade! Wallpaper used to be fabric, y'know.

Aren't slippers the correct thing to wear with a tuxedo?

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

great photo rrrobyn

(and people, no croc talk, thanks)

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

thanks :)

omg patent tuxedo slippers

i would like those princess slippers in royal blue and fuschia, but since searching last night for those big warm sheepswool things upthread, my heart belongs to warmth and softness. why must they be so expensive :( my feet need them.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Still in love with the brocade ones.

Laurel, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

I tend to wear out the pretty girly slippers. I had a pair like the ones in the original photo, but they did not last long. :-(

But LL Bean slippers are nigh on indestructable. It takes me at least 5 years to wear out a pair! And they are so comfy! It is like wearing sheep on yr feet.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

Such barbary, wearing sheep on one's feet in this day and age!
