Great news all-round.

The question is, who will be presenting and punditing?

All the pre-Channel Four crew are either a) otherwise employed, or b) dead - so who will it be?

Are they just going to take Sunset and Vine's team (Nicholas, Boycs, Hughes et al) on loan for the winter?

Personally I'd like some opinionated former naughty boy like Cork or Reeve to be involved.

Oh this is good news.

As for the commentary team, how about asking Michael Vaughan?

If they could woo Simon Hughes (while preferrably avoiding eye contact with Mark Nicholas) that would be a good thing. Oh and please, BBC, no Graeme Thorpe.

I can see Agnew transferring to TV.

It'll be Gary Lineker, clearly.

"But the popular BBC cricket theme tune, Booker T and the MGs' Soul Limbo may be resurrected."

yay!

Ashes squad announced.

Flintoff as captain seems wrong to me. Not only bcz he's coming back from injury to having to bowl and bat really well, but also he'll have to look after the tactical side.

Even more importantly is that I'm too SURE AT ALL about his captaincy, he seems too 'nice' a person. The friendliest moments in the Ashes came from Flintoff being all chummy to Brett Lee. Maybe nice as a player but I'm not sure whether that will do as captain.

On the other hand, Strauss has done v well, but Pakistan were an under-strength team, which is why that last test ws kinda important to see how eng (both Strauss and the batsmen) did under a bit of pressure. On balance I would've said Strauss simply bcz it takes a bit of the stress away from Flintoff.

Surely pundit will be "star of Strictly Come Dancing" Darren Gough? One for the ladies, and all that? I have no idea who it will really be (nor do I really care), but surely for recognition/lowest-common-denominator both him and Phil Tufnell must be involved?

Flintoff as Captain? ROFL. So the Poms aren't serious then.

And a 14 man back-up squad based in Perth? Expecting some injuries then lads?

Yes we're taking at least four crocks, but the strategy of having a bunch of blokes in Australia on stand-by, rather than flying them halfway round the world if they're needed, strikes me as a reasonable idea.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

Makes sense really, we let Langer and Gillespie recuperate in county cricket, letting a few of our stand-bys have a game in grade seems the least to be done in return.

The Aussies getting cocky already, good news!

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Flintoff as captain is a good idea if only because he seems to be the only bloke who can get the best out of Harmison.
