Got this one of Chris' in my living room (Lords, Last of the Real Hardmen, Wolves! of Greece, sometime member of Damo Suzuki's Network, and probably lots of other things besides. He's a grumpy sod, though):http://www.gigposters.com/posters/44537.jpg
Oh, and I like the style of the Cosmic Bubblegum ones, rrrobyn, but I feel guilty about preferring them to Seripop, who seem to be creating their own aesthetic (rather than aping a classic style) much more.

And Stevem, yes flyers matter a lot. It might be slightly different in other cities but in Manchester we can run around town catching gigs and the end of clubs. No doubt this would be trickier in London, but it could and should be done to an extent. Plus it's more than just telling people about the night: we've heard about people pinning the Clique ones to their wall, shop-owners love them so put them in prime position and tell their customers, press people love a well-designed flyer, it gets our clubbers more involved as we use photos of them, etc.
Myspace, press and word-of-mouth also matter a lot but there's nothing more memorable than having a great little image thrust at you after a night out. It's vital to do them well though, a little scrap of photocopied paper is more likely to put people off than anything. From the design stuff I've seen of yours I'm sure you could come up with something superb. I'm sure Pisces has more to say on this.
Another great Manchester flyer:
