*yawn*

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ten years ago I was not a Tupac fan (I had never really taken the time to become one.) The night he died we were at a seedy bar in Houston seeing crap indie bands and the openers (Junior Varsity) came on and announced that Tupac had not survived his gunshot wounds. They proclaimed mock sympathy and the audience applauded. My husband and I were disgusted and walked out.

I wonder if people still have such a misguided knee-jerk reaction to Tupac and artists of his ilk a decade later.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

He'd be alright if only he stopped releasing terrible albums

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, yes they do. it took me five years after his death to stop disliking him outright and the last five has seen indifference shift to general respect and increased interest in the work (ILM and certain posters on it have helped here). ten years from now I'll be like one of those weirdos with his face tattooed on their belly at this rate.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think if he had lived he would've become known less for his music and more for acting/writing/activism. He was brilliant. But he died at 25 and did/said some dumb things like most young people do. The world never got a chance to fully experience his potential.

On the bus in the morning I always see kids with ubiqitous tupace flea-market tees (and shoes!). Which is bizarre to me. these kids were not alive/in diapers when he was making music! are white high schoolers walking around with cobain tees today? (I don't see white high schoolers so I truly don't know.)

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

I am not doubting the existence of 8-year-olds with Tupac gear on, just boggling at the concept. Wow. I'm gonna be the most boringest dad ever.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Every generation's gotta have their Jim Morrison, I guess.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

I was in freshman year of high school. WOW

Really cool, wickedly cool, cooly cool bon apetit! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno about white, but in Toronto I saw an Asian high schooler with a Cobain t-shirt this weekend.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

are white high schoolers walking around with cobain tees today?

Certainly in the UK, bloody loads of them are, yes.

emil.y (emil.y), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

yeh Cobain shirts got relatively popular with kid whose first experience of RAWK was Korn. this Tupac thing is no different.

Equal rights for gang rapists?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

This is an example of the knee-jerk reaction I was talking about.

I'm imagining that falls in to the category of "dumb things (that) most young people do" (xxxpost)

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think the knee-jerk negative reaction a lot of people have to racists is something society needs to overcome if it can ever truly love "Ghetto Gospel".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

that's rapist

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

What? Aren't "most young people" rapists?

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Although ten years ago I believed he was guilty of sexual assualt, I no longer do. I've read and heard more about the case against him and believe he was wrongly convicted.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Well that's convenient isn't it?

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

oh i remeber that day. hi tupac, i ain't mad atcha.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Are people not allowed to change their minds Dadismus? He was always adamant about his innocence and once I actually took the time to investigate beyond tv soundbites, I believed him.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

go ahead and tell us why then

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not interested in defending my feelings for Tupac, that isn't why I started this thread nor do I find it neccesary. But since it appears some people are too lazy to google here are a few often overlooked facts: he was not convicted of sexual assault(rape) but did 8 months for "sexual abuse: touching of buttocks"; there was no physical evidence to support rape by anyone whatsover, much less him; the judge in the case said he didn't think tupac was guilty of assualt but that he had too many criminal problems to not be convicted of something. wow, gotta love that American justice.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

lack of physical evidence in rape case, whoever heard of such a thing/

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Breean Weldrick (weldrick), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

having googled, i wonder what kind of unbiased commentary can be expected from thuglifearmy.com

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, never visited that site. Usually you have to use your own critical thinking skills when evaluating the trustworthiness of a news site. Perhaps you should work on yours.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

oh god just give a couple paragraphs and a few links dood

I AM GENUINELY INTERESTED BUT TOO LAZY TOO GOOGLE PLZ HELP

(also somehow all my tupac albums got their playorder tagged by alphbetical - how much does that suck. also too lazy to retag. there's so many of them!)

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

maybe we can discuss the scene in biggie & tupac where tupac's friend plays him the demo in the park.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

This thread is really bizarre. When did all the Britishes becomes so reactionary?
