The thread for particularly bad examples of numarketing

I use "numarketing" as a catchall for all things involving "viral marketing" and other novel techniques for reaching various demographics.

Exhibit A is Toyota's "DIY: Drive It Yourself" campaign for the Yaris (which sounds like a Hindi word for clit or something).

They sponsor indie rock concerts and use lots of precious little character illustrations. They also let you stencil your own tees!

From their "contributors" page:

ReadyMade Magazine is for people who see the flicker of invention in everyday objects, and for those who just like to make cool stuff. Over 80% of the ideas you see in the magazine come straight from the mag's readers. ReadyMade is the only DIY magazine for people like us on the newsstand today.

Maybe not quite on topic, but I encountered a video crew one time that was traveling around the country filming a gimmicky Norwegian band called Hurra Torpedo, as well as just filming their own misadventures on the road. The obnoxious part was that the end goal of this wasn't really what they were putting on film, but to be able to put chunks of it on the web in order to promote the Ford Fusion - the amazing new car in which they traveled, editing the video right in the back seat! The band, the documentary, the escapades were all being brought into alignment just to make webisodes that would somehow relate to the car. I wouldn't have been surprised if the band, and their schticky prop-comic approach to rock and roll, also turned out to have been assembled on spec...

And the funniest part is that such an effort strikes me as much more elaborately thought out than traditional advertising and much more doomed to failure.

i read about that project and it sounds so boring

They were horrible tippers too, and that's with a lot of ordering rounds for the whole bar, etc.

They are not, actually. But also, I'm pretty sure they're not the type of guys to have any qualms about ahem Selling Out, given a good opportunity. I gave some more information about them in the thread Hurra Torpedo.

I found the perfect can't put it down, page turner, laugh out loud chick lit book. And I don't read chick lit. "The What if Guy" by Taylor Wilshire. The thing that makes this book so good is the spiritual twist. The main character is looking for her soul-mate and along the way she finds her authentic self, her spiritual self. It's a chick book with substance. Check out the reviews and more at www.thewhatifguy.com

why do all "healthy" food and drink companies now have to put "innocent"-style twee shit on the side of the packaging like "Hi I'm a delicious healthy salad who was lovingly prepared and packaged by a Care Bear called Ryan. Ryan went to great lengths to pick only the yummiest rocket leaves for my base and squeezed and the vinaigrette is made out of his very own bum-ghee".

Because their products are pitched at twee wankers?

they're probably more like tree-wankers who wank off trees and drink the juice.
