The Return Of Poptimism : October 5th 2006

That's right, you heard it here now. The world famous, often imitated, always bettered, Freakytrigger Pop Music dancing and drinking club Poptimism has a new home. At least for a bit. Ousted cruelly by the new management at the Polar Bear a year ago we had been homeless, homeless, not even moonlight sleeping on a midnight lake. Well I went down the Polar Bear the other day AND IT WAS CLOSED! Any connection between their closure to their FASCISTIC POLICY ON POP CLUBS is easily demonstrable.

Well fear not. After a year wandering int the wilderness, occasionally poking its head into sweaty dives looking for sustenance, Poptimism has a new home. And people who enjoyed the last temp version at the Union Tavern, will be pleased to hear that this is the venue. A proper upstairs room in a pub. With a little serving hatch, oddly padded tables and with us needing to bring the gear. But dammit, the management and staff are so nice there, and it marries all the things we like about pubs with all the things we like about pop.

So Thursday 5th October: the Return Of Poptimism.
AKA Timtimism (as it is Tim's Birthday)
Furthermore known as Mandee & Kelly-a-Rama (special guest DJ's from across t'pond)

DJ's include The Barnet Ape (who has refound his mojo), Carsmile and Cockfarmer, with guest Nu-country and Tickle Tune from Tim, plus aforementioned septics.

Come one. Come all. (Capacity about eighty - so all in the usual, not strictly accurate sense as it would be used in logic. But then if I wanted to do that I'd use an ∀).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

woo!

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

the Polar Bear seemed a really popular pub - don't understand why it's been shut down (presumably for good) - but then see also Intrepid Fox (so much for the Gothtimism branch out...).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Property development (in the case of the Intrepid Fox)

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Will there be the same nudge-wink attitude to the lastness of last orders I wonder?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

hey, it's my birthday too although i don't know if i can make it :-(

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

> as it is Tim's Birthday

this is a lie. it's actually dog latin's birthday.

awesome! i like this place. when is it until?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Only midnight, but then that worked well last time, with similar last order shenangians.

November and December are probably going to be Friday's. Nick (the manager) did ask if we minded people from ITN coming too...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

... Trevor McDonald?

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Wicked. I'm there.

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Probably just Jon Snow and Krisnan Guru-Murthy. Its a more Ch4 News kind of deal.

So if we hear "Fix You" at about quarter past midnight, we'll know why...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

what about the one with the lisp, john smith's daughter, isn't she?

also surely the channel 4 news theme is almost bosh anyway...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

the bbc is nu-rave

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

as I said already on another thread, i think there's been a disaster re: DJing. My CD-burner is KAPUT. could someone else be my proxy??

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

can you not zap your mp3s to someone for burning?

Ed (dali), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

just print out the setlist you want to play and get someone else to dj for you on the night.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

yes, i think perhaps a mix of these two options might be best, ie i bet we have some of the thing you want to play and if the rest could be gmailled/ysied i could burn a cd for you.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

I love Poptimism.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Looking forward especially to December and Club Poptimism On Ice...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Am now trying to package Poptimism to friends as thee destination venue for the G00blar Birthday Extravaganza.

g00blar (gooblar), Friday, 29 September 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Another one

Ed (dali), Friday, 29 September 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Mandee & Kelly-a-Rima? Sounds enticing, but I seem to have about 3 plans on the 5th already. Hummmm.

Badrock Example (Barima), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

You're just too much of a social butterfly, Barims. ;-)

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Monday, 2 October 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

Are there any early doors plans?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

Opening the doors early!!!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'll come and watch that bit then.

I was thinking more along the lines of Carsmile psyching himself up.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

That's not why he plays, Eye of the Tiger.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

comma abuse up 400% since RJG 'let go'.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

I think Andrew was usuing my new handle, Konal.

Eye of the Tiger (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

obvs.

g00blar (gooblar), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

I am working on the free giveaway CDs tonight.

The theme is BALLADS.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

can you make it BALLARD but sans Primitives?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh, ballads. Ballads are only good for couples. How about you play some music for the rest of us? Bah, I might boycott this. :-(

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Kate this is the GIVEAWAY CD i.e. not what we're going to play! It's for punters to take home.

(I am also compiling my CDs of stuff to play which is the usual bosh nonsense.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

that's a load of ballads, that about only for couples.

it's also for KARAOKES.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, OK, that's fine then. Carry on.

::makes note not to take free CD::

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

It's this one.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

HAng on, If 'Bold Sir Rylas' is Ballad i don't know what is?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

Apologies, a significant error was mad ein that last statement

Hang on, If 'Bold Sir Rylas' isn't Ballad i don't know what is?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Ken's comment was v. funny. Especially as TISSP's gf and I had been laughing lamenting over his almost comical state of inebriation.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

:-D

ken c (ken c), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the very idea of The Lex cockblocking is inherently funny.

TISSP!: Kate!!! Come back to Cambridge with us and listen to my post-rock records!
The Lex: Post-Rock? What is post rock? I have never heard of post rock.
TISSP!: You know, post rock! Like, non-traditional arrangements, and played on non-traditional instruments. With BEARDS!!! Like, er, Godspeed! You Black Emporer!
The Lex: What apalling punctuation! And rock music is ghastly! Kate, come away from that ghastly bearded, poorly punctuated man and leap through the window of sensible with me.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the very idea of The Lex cockblocking is inherently funny.

But not as funny as the reality of The Lex dancing to Lily Allen

Mike Giggler (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

I almost tipped my chair over with laughter.

There's another pic on my Flickr stream from that night, but it's only for "friends".

No wonder you were so utterly and inexorably fucked up! ;-)

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Sort of. I was a bit ill on the train back. And we missed our stop, and ended up in Aylesbury! (xpost)

London FAPs: 2, Returning to home mishaps: 2. Awesome!

This weekend I have been recording. In a church.

Haha Ken's assholism has reminded me of Magnus' excellent misinterpretation of TISSP's girlfriend.

What? What? Misinterpretation of MY GIRLFRIEND? Should I be worried?

TISSP = still not not looking like WBS

Oh yes he is!

What's all this about then?

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

Magnus? yes. Very worried. Keep an eye on that one.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Ah. That clears things up

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

tissp, I hope you weren't too drunk to remember proposing an all-out festival of ilx bands in cambridge!

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

No, I remember that! And I mean it. Seems like I've been saying it for a while, but things are starting to creep forward re/ actually doing it.

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, you've been saying *we* could play your Cambridge ILX festival for ages.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I know. But like I say, things are moving forward now!

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Have you got a location for said festival? ? If so I know a man with a Rig.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

a rig?

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Is that like a big truck?

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's a like a big sound system.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, can we redefine "festival" as "night", which is slightly more accurate. As for locations, there are a couple to consider.

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

Can't we do it on the back of a truck in the Cambridge countryside?

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

We should do it at the big sound system, no?

Hey, maybe to distract myself I might post the date of the next Poptimism...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

The big sound system moves around and requires a venue in which to be set up.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

tissp and his gf were total treats - so did you ever make it hitchin or were you wandering aimlessly through arlesey?

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

We got to Hitchin eventually. About 3.30am or something if I remember correctly!

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)
