valentine's day

I find the whole idea of Valentine's day sort of embarrassing. Maybe because the only Valentine's day gift I ever got was a chocolate heart that that had been squashed on purpose.

Can this day ever overcome the commercial hype and mean something true and worthwhile or does the sentimental and (ew) faux-sexy aspect make it just too gross for words?

Do you give cards or gifts on Valentine's day? What is the best/worst thing you've ever received?

rainy, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I send cards out and I love to. I have never gotten a gift though only cards.

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This'll be the first time I'll be sending out Valentines in many, many years. Trick is: don't take this goddamn holiday too seriously. Many hearts have been broken, and many fights have been caused because of this arbitrary expection that's supposed to be raised THIS ONE DAY A YEAR... for reasons based in history that most people don't know.. BECAUSE IT'S VALENTINE'S DAY!! Sigh.

Instead, either A) treat it like any other day, or B) warp it to be an excuse for you to tell your closest acquaintances that they mean something special to you -- and if have a significant other, don't limit it just to that significant other.

rainy, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Speaking of the history of Valentine's Day...

Still though, I hate how the holiday has warped into becoming the Celebration Of Not Being Single, as opposed to Celebration Of Those Who Died For Love.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Woah! rainy bmac mindmeld

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BMAC?!

ethan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

here is the story of the only time i've ever done anything for valentines day: when i was in high school i was a wierdo and i stalked some guy and sent him a box of chockies for valentines day. he liked the chockies but he didn't like me, in fact he spread a rumour that i spread a rumour that hes gay. which i didn't do.

i've never received anything for valentines day.

di, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once gave someone a copy of the cd-single of "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston for Valentines Day. Seemed a bit silly after the very violent fight we'd had the night before.

No one has ever given me anything for Valentines Day but not many people do here - it seems to be considered pretty tacky and it's mostly bogans buying each other crappy little white teddy bears or red satin devils holding hearts. I think it's catching on more and more every year though. Yum, chocolate.

toraneko, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once gave someone a copy of the cd-single of "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston

And this was meant to show your affection??

Sean, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BMAC?!

Nickname given to me all my life -- even during changing social circles. I can't deny it anymore. I am one with BMAC

BMAC, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmm, it = licence-for-mentalism day

i sent [xXx] a big envelope full of dozens of difft kinds of cards, from weird to bland to sexy to silly to boring, and a note saying "choose the one you wd prefer to have got from me" (i remained anonymouse xcept not obv): i haf no idea how this went down, tho we were actual propah friends at that point and stayed so for some months, as NOTHING WAS EVAH SED. i am borderline embarrassed abt this...

mark s, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never really done the Valentines thing. Well, I did give a card to a girl in my class when I was nine but I don't think that really counts.

However, this year, I am going to the SEASIDE!

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my friends and i always run around being bitter and giving each other candy and hugging and the like. for the first time it looks like i'll actually have a date, who will be out of town for the week, so my tradition will not be disrupted.

in elementary school we all had to give out valentines to everyone in the class. one year i had the little aladdin punch-out cards ones and i spent a long time looking at the colors of each and deciding how they fit the personalities of my classmates. then we had lots of food and the afternoon off for a party. i wish school was still like that!

Maria, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

valentines day can eat. you hear me?

EAT IT.

jess, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Jessie :), you sound like maybe you have had some heart-break in your life? Valentine's Day is a beautifull day and should not eat it I don't think!! :)

ethan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I was in Form Two (twelve) this guy Brendan Paisley (I think that was his name) left a box of chocolates in my letterbox with the note 'To a fellow Pink Floyd fan.' Check it out, I wasn't that much of a Pink Floyd fan!

In the same class there was this guy with the nickname 'Smurf.' There was this poll and you had to write down beside your name who you most wanted to go out with. I wrote down 'Smurf' and he wrote down me so we started going out. It broke up after a few days, though.

Hey I've got a great idea. This should turn into a 'ILE Valentines Thread' and you can write an anonymous valentine to someone you love on the forum.

Or maybe we should have a poll like the one I did in Form Two. the girls who were conducting the poll ONLY BROKE MY ANONYMITY because me and Smurf wrote each other's names, so they weren't really betraying me, it was for love.

maryann, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i choo-choo-choose you.

ralph, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And what we should do is, Tom and DG should look at the anonymous IP addresses and if two people's love matches up, they have to go to each others country and get married. If they don't go to the country and get married, they are never allowed to go on ILE again except that there will be a thread to commemorate their love once a week and that is the only thread they are allowed on.

maryann, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plus burning matches under their fingernails.

maryann, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is beginning to give me the fear.

Anyway, last year I had someone to be Valentiney with, this year not. Ah well. Life continues!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's the day where you get voyeuristic and lonely and watch people cuddle on park benches. Giddy lovers are in your face and little things, like seeing 2 dishes together in the sink, suddenly become threatening. What do the not-single people do anyhow? Do they gush along with the chocolate and red construction paper?

Honda, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Play the game of love, Ned - or else!

maryann, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They should also have to take weekly quizzes to make sure they still love each other the same amount. If one person loves the other person a bit less, then somebody is not trying hard enough and should have to have a punishment of some kind.

rainy, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

skin them alive

maryann, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my not-single self is going to be doing the same thing she does every year, single or not:

pretend the chocolates and the frilly bits of paper and cheesy lingerie do not exist, 'cause valentine's day is lame.

nancy b., Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Nancy B. :), why are you so bitter and frigid about Valentine's Day? I think you need help!! :)

ethan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your armpits smell like minestrone?

("Meeneh-strony Meeneh-strony... {clap clap}... WITH... CHEESE!"}

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aww...Rainy that's just depressing. Poor food! Just wasted! Oh wait, I'm sorry it was purposedly squashed for you (oop...that didn't come out first, not on purpose ^_^*). I don't think this holiday can ever come over the commercial hype...nope. Christmas can't, Saint Patrick's Day can't...and certainly the day of amore won't. I personally only liked this holiday when I was in elementary school...it was a communist society where everyone got equal valentines, equal candies, etc. It was indeed, the utopia, though I don't think this should be applied to mass populations.

In any case, I usually give stuff on V-day though last year I skimped because I had a boyfriend (he was a little insecure let's just say...he didn't like me paying heed to other people, needless to say, we did not last). This year I will though, including my hospital coworkers.

Worst thing I've receieved (start off with the bad) was a single red rose. They're so commercialized, I grow them in my backyard, and he didn't even buy it himself! I personally am not really fond of roses but tulips instead (of which my best girlfriend bought me (in pink, an adorable color, and who also had to buy the rose for my boyfriend because he couldn't get out of his house...lame).

Best thing I received was a bouquet of 8 roses. Though I just said I wasn't really fond of roses (and still really aren't...at least not red, white, or yellow ones...unusual colors are kinda cool), this was a little different. This was my first serious boyfriend (I was in 8th grade, hah!) and my favorite number is 8. The guy was really sweet about it too.

But in any case, this holiday is a little infamous around me and my friends. No good has ever really come of it, actually, nope, never. It just makes the ones that aren't paired feel that much worse, and that's never good. Why are we celebrating love one day when it should be celebrated every other day of the year?

kimera, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always thought Valentine's Day was vaguely stupid...I don't think I've ever done anything special for it. It's not a bitterness thing, cos if I'm single I usually find someone to mess around with pretty quickly, but even when I'm in a relationship it's just like *shrug* hey, it's Valentine's Day. I've never been angry over being "alone" or happy over being "together". I don't want bloody chocolates or roses and I feel silly in the Frederick's of Hollywood dress up costumes, so it's not much of a holiday to me. I prefer St. Patrick's Day for useless holidays. Plus this year Valentine's Day is midweek! I mean what's the point?

Ally, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am embarrassed to admit that david makes an absurdly big deal about this in a rather tacky way , limos , roses , expensive dinners , jewelry , i just want to forget it .

anthonyeaston, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never received a Valentine before! Back in school, yes, we were forced to give out Valentine's, but ever since then..none.

Mandee, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel silly in the Frederick's of Hollywood dress up costumes

Hey, you're not the only one.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think its GREAT.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dislike Valentines Day. I have never sent or received anything.

jel, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still remember with fondness the year at college when the only card I got was from a mentalist friend who was sectioned not long after. Or the year when a mate sent me & another friend sympathy cards cos he didn't think we'd get any. All terribly romantic.

Emma, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let's all send Emma an e-card!

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HEY this is my first non single Valentines day and I intend to milk it. RIGHT, I want Buffy Season 2 eps 12-whatever video box set, all of season 3, four and go on, five, although I've not even seen all of it yet but what the hey. Lots of chocolate and I would also like a bottle of PORT, a bottle of RUM, a bottle of GIN, some cheese (stilton or a strong cheddar or krraft cheese slices), OH you know what I've not had for ages? FROSTIES I'll have some of those, oh I would quite like one of those zany new iBooks too, did I mention I have a wishlist at amazong.com? I can never find though CHIZ CHIZ but hey wouldn't it be fun to try??

Then again if I am still un-single after this post it will be a mirable. Emma, your story was touching.

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(I have only ever gotten a card from my dad)

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, I'll get you the Frosties then.

RickyT, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I get any e-cards I think I will have to spend the day in the ladies' alternately weeping or kicking the sanitary towel & tampon bin.

Once I had a boyfriend who gave me 2 cards - I knew 1 was from him but wasn't sure about the other. He said 'I gave you another card to see if you'd tell me about it'. Mind games! Madness!

Emma, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Despite having a poor record for receiving I usually give in a very good anonymous fashion so that no-one ever knows it was me. I usually succeed in this by send cards to people who don't know me.

Did anyone elses family always eat Lambs Hearts on Valentines Day? Hmmmm Stuffed Hearts.

(Oh - and stop stealing my minestone armpit routine).

Pete, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really resent Valentines Day. It reminds me of when you go home for Christams and all your relatives interrogate you about why you don't have a boyfriend except the *whole world* is doing it rather than just your grandmother. I also like to think if I was in a relationship with someone I really liked we would do things all the time rather than conforming to cliched hearts and flowers style things. (This is why I liked Sarah's request for cheese and Frosties) This could mean I am either a terrible cynic or a hopeless idealist, both of these things make me a terrible girlfriend.

Anna, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YAY Frosties!! With some Nice Cold Ice Cold Milk please. I will eat them from my BOWL. Mmmmm num num. I have emailed RickyT a picture of Rob Crow in his pants for HIS Valentines day present.

Sarah, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete you fool that minestrone armpit 'routine' was a COME-ON. Duh!

I don't actually think V-Day is great by the way. Love = fantastic. Some traditional signifiers of love = fantastic. 2-foot high Forever Friends ooshy bear card = not fantastic. Thorntons chocolates costing £4.99 for 'cupid's arrow' shape = not fantastic.

Urgent question for Dr C, Omar etc. - the parental question ladder of which Anna discusses the first rung. It starts with "Why havent you got a proper boyfriend/girlfriend?". It continues with "Why aren't you married yet?". It then presumably enters "Where are my grandchildren?". WHAT COMES NEXT?

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
