Discuss ultimate necessity of e-zines as well as perception of same as 'poor relation' to print

Gosh, is this true? If so, it's a shame. (Not that I looked at Salon much in the last year.) I guess it had been coming for a while with all the Salon Premium business. But in its time I think it was the best online culture mag - it certainly employed some of my favourite writers (Marcus, Steve Erickson, Jonathan Lethem, David Thomson). I'm kind of baffled why no one can sustain this kind of enterprise... people are prepared to pay for all kinds of services (and send txtmsgs at 20p a time) from their mobile phones, (and pay real money for rubbishy newspapers) but not to pay to read articles online. Of course you can get so much content for nada from weblogs, e-zines, forums etc - but I don't think you can beat a properly commissioned and edited magazine (which actually pays its writers). Hmm.

I'd love David Thomson to start posting on ILE.

is there a new development of sorts?

dotcomscoop ran a pretty good overview of why salon's having so many troubles selling premium subscriptions.

While I wish David Horowitz and Camille Paglia a merry time in hell, and was never much impressed with Sarah Vowell, the loss of their writing on Salon should've been a warning sign to me that the site was suffering slow death. Looks like all their graphic designers have jumped ship, too -- recent artwork has been shockingly mediocre. That pic of Reagan morphing into Bush? Crimony! Even *I* could better than that!

Michael Daddino, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But it's not Sarah Vowell's writing I'm in love with, it's her squeaky hitchy voice. And her stories of marching band.

nine months pass...
Their Mark Fiore "flash cartoonist" is absolutely apalling. Worse than "Brent-physical satirist".

But anyway, they appear to be still going.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 November 2002 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark Fiore's everywhere - blaming Salon for him is like giving them credit for Ruben Bolling or blaming/crediting them for Tom Tomorrow.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be about Salon turning into a porn site.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well NASDAQ just kicked them out, so it seems their survival is still precarious. Most of their arts-related stuff is vitally important to my life (except their music stuff (except Marcus)). Their news isn't much use to me.

B.Rad (Brad), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought NASDAQ dropped them a while back. Anyhow, I'll miss it but not half as much as I miss Feed or Suck.

one year passes...

i thought this was going to be about the channel four ladyboy-staffed reality hairdressers.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

More places of business should be staffed by ladyboys.

The Seattle Weekly music section is not enough.
