Gosh, is this true? If so, it's a shame. (Not that I looked at Salon
much in the last year.) I guess it had been coming for a while with
all the Salon Premium business. But in its time I think it was the
best online culture mag - it certainly employed some of my favourite
writers (Marcus, Steve Erickson, Jonathan Lethem, David Thomson). I'm
kind of baffled why no one can sustain this kind of enterprise...
people are prepared to pay for all kinds of services (and send
txtmsgs at 20p a time) from their mobile phones, (and pay real money
for rubbishy newspapers) but not to pay to read articles online. Of
course you can get so much content for nada from weblogs, e-zines,
forums etc - but I don't think you can beat a properly commissioned
and edited magazine (which actually pays its writers). Hmm.
