Eeep sorry Cabbage I didn't mean to offend if I was going that way - it's just that it makes me angry the way some people have been treated and... well let's just say that there was a time when if anyone had said to me 'it's just a mailing list' I would have laughed - and now I've reached the time where that's JUST what it is and it's a big, BIG relief.
Then again I am constantly in an existential crisis! What fung!
But I guess it would have to have been an indie advice column so I was mistaken all the same.

sidethread. 73 is the year of the Ox- I know a story about how the chinese years got numbered - Rat comes before Ox. I haven't got a clue what happens after that. what I got told is that Buddha called all the animals and asked them to come to him, like a race. So Ox, being all strong and that, is making great headway and looks like he's going to win when, at the last, he comes to a river in which is the island where buddha sits. Ratty hitches a lift on Ox's shoulders, and hops off on the other side and so wins the race. I like this story cos I love all things Rat, but I'd like to know the rest of it. I am sure each animal has a story relating to where they came in the race. If anyone knows it I'd like to hear.

But it's such an inbetweeny year for music. Even my beloved Tom Waits broke off his album-a-year tradition to wait for 1983's Swordfishtrombones. I never could get into the whole post punk thing and it seems all the important stuff got going about 1981/82 anyway.

which is great because monkeys are the best! intelligent, mischievous, influential, but um, easily confused. also if you are a rat (1972, 1984) or a dragon (1964, 1976) we should get together and have sex because we get along well. but if you are a tiger (1974 or 1986) it means we should not get together or have sex because we are incompatible. sorry markc

Patrick Ewing born on August 5, 1962
Jonathan Silverman born on August 5, 1966

Odd.
I find, increasingly, that I'm part of an in-between generation that:
a) is old enough to have grown up on our parents' classic rock recordsb) is young enough to have embraced house, techno, hip-hop, indie, grunge, punk, etc.(Check all that apply.)c) is generally overeducated and underpaidd) is the prototype for a certain kind of "all-about-me" middle-class cluelessness that is even more prevalent in our younger brothers and sisters
... all of which would explain why I hang out online as much as I do.
Anyway, cheers, Pears.
― Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 21 January 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)
Not a great virtue, but still better than "all-about-me" upper-class viciousness.
But yeah. I'm right there with you.

Kind of sort of. I don't remember the decade, but I remember some things from the 70s -- I remember waiting in line for gasoline, and riding my Big Wheel around the driveway while they talked about the hostages on the radio, although I guess that was actually 1980 -- and of course, in the early 80s the half of daytime television programming that wasn't soap operas was made up of syndicated 70s television. So I grew up watching The Courtship of Eddie's Father and The Hardy Boys and whatnot.
And my parents were in their late 30s when they adopted me, so the kids I spent most of my time with when I was very young (my parents' friends' kids) were all much older than me, so I was exposed to a lot of Shaun Cassidy posters and got hand-me-down Keep On Truckin' T-shirts and whatnot.
