US Scrabble Championships 2006 is on (a.k.a. "WHO THE FUCK SAYS 'ZA'?")

They just added "Qi" and "Za" to the scrabble dictionary and it's a big to-do. You can get like 60 points on one of them.

"Qi" is a another variation of "chi" in "tai chi"

"Za" is slang for "pizza"

Which brings me to:

WHO THE FUCK SAYS "ZA"?

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

Urban dictionary:

za

Abbreviation of "pizza".

"Let's call Domino's and order up some za."

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

I think that saying "Let's call Domino's and order up some za" is a legitimate reason to stop being friends with someone.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

my roommate (who's a total bro) likes using the word "sando" to refer to a food item of meat between two slices of bread.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Well za.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Alex,

I hate it when people use the word "za" for pizza. Drives me crazy. Can that be yr next project?

Thx

People actually say "za" instead of pizza?!?!?

I've heard it. Not in about fifteen years, but I've heard it.

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), June 16th, 2005.

Not people worth knowing...but yes, they do.

-- John Justen (johnjuste...), June 16th, 2005.

I don't know what to say.

-- Lingbertt (a...), June 16th, 2005.

way x-post: Pete, I will be at my wife's West High reunion (class of 1985) in late July! (Her brother, Dan D1Prim4, graduated in 1988. Know him?) If you come out for the alumni thing, gimme a holler.

-- Haikunym (zinogu...), June 16th, 2005.

Yeah, I remember Dan. Sure thing, let's get 'za.

-- Pete Scholtes (pscholte...), June 16th, 2005.

"qi" has been in the SOWPODS for as long as I've been playing Scrabble, which is a good ten years, and surely longer?

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just saying what they said on CNN.

Dude didn't even blink when he said "za"

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 1 October 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

This reminds me of the time I played scrabble drunk, and demanded to know what the fuck a "zo" was every time my turn came around, despite the fact it got patiently explained to me each time I asked.

And then I went to put my letters down and knocked all the tiles off the board.

Do not play scrabble with me.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 1 October 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

What the fuck IS a 'zo'?

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

Besides a Matthew Shipp/William Parker album of duets, I mean.

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

WHO THE FUCK SAYS "ZA"?

my friend j0rd@n says this all the time.

real savage-like (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently a zo is some kind of tibetan antelope, or something.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

So, a "zo za" would be like the greatest meal ever!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

A zo is the same as a dzo, right? It's one of those hybrid animals, if I remember correctly. You know, like a mule.

SOWPODS isn't the US list, by definition, right? Or am I forgetting? It's been a while since I turned my back to Scrabble.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 2 October 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

sowpod is the wordlist for international play

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

how about 'zzz' as a word. it's in there, now. what a waste, both blanks and the z for maybe 30 points.

jergins (jergins), Monday, 2 October 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

so do they still use a separate list for national championships, rather than sowpods? i figured they'd have sorted that out by now.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

so you're allowed to use slang in scrabble now?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

i hope they allow "innit"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

Who the fuck says za = my high school debate coach in northern Michigan?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

i remember the first time i heard za - totally flabbergasted.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

i hope they allow "innit"

It's certainly more culturally-sensitive than "eskmo".
