Not entirely, since I've only DL'ed half of it so far and the dude I'm getting it from has a bit of a drag-ass queue. Early impressions is that her voice was pretty much made for Timbaland production and she can do justice to both '01 futuroid R&B&E and old-school Marvin Gaye covers.

Here's the thing about Scott Glenn's portrayal, and some background -- at the time the film was made, my dad was the second in command of the Point Loma sub base in San Diego; filming for the concluding fight sequence was done using some boats from the base, and the filmmakers and actors were down there at the base for a while. When I saw the film, I thought to myself, "Jeez, did Glenn hang around my dad or something?" It's not that my dad's like that in everyday life, but on duty he was very much a combination of consideration and no-nonsense just like Glenn did the character. So I asked him and he said no (which makes sense -- my dad was after all essentially keeping an eye on the official business of the whole base and was essentially deskbound/land-based), but he mentioned the captain who Glenn had shadowed for a while to get a sense of how to do his portrayal. So what you're seeing in Glenn's role is actually as close as you'll ever get, I'd figure, to a good portrayal of what a lot of sub captains in the US fleet were like for many years -- there's definitely a certain type that the Navy focuses on and cultivates. This was especially the case due to the influence of Admiral Hyman Rickover, who essentially ran the sub fleet as his private fiefdom for decades and ensured that only the officers he thought could fit his very particular mold got the nod -- I'd say it's very, very much a Cold War thing in particular as well. So besides the other personal connections I have to the film, I'll always like that my dad and a lot of his fellows got a bit of immortality that way -- and I have to say a lot of the casual joshing around on the US boat strikes me as true too, especially Courtney Vance as the sonar officer. Those guys DEFINITELY know they're good.

mctiernan is A+ at getting that kind of realism, espesh with HFRO.

lesser flicks would have dispensed with the bit of humorous backstory CV's character was given in the opening scene on the sub.

Yeah that intro scene was SO perfect as three Navy character types -- know it all zinging the new kid, senior officer cuts in but in a way that nobody's feathers are really ruffled and there's lots of good humor and bullshit, along with a classic example of a crazy/random old sub tale. I'd seen or heard variants of all that for years beforehand.
The sub fleet REALLY sees itself as almost the only fleet; they keep quiet and will deal with you on a need to know basis. The running joke for their surface fleet compatriots: "Target practice." I do strongly suggest reading the book Blind Man's Bluff for as good an unclassified history of the post WWII fleet through the Cold War as you can find; a number of officers mentioned after a certain point were either colleagues or classmates of my dad, or fathers of fellow students on mine when I lived on an actual base (Mare Island) for two years.

scott glenn's glasses in this movie own
― LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Saturday, 8 December 2012 00:36 (thirteen years ago)
Rickover was a classic example of monomaniacal focus and political savvy. He cultivated Congress brilliantly to ensure he got his share of the pie and pretty much told successive Secretaries of the Navy to butt out. John Lehman finally got the better of him in the Reagan years and kicked him upstairs to ensure there was more direct control of the sub fleet (understandably so). The story goes that in Rickover's office he kept a photo portrait of Lehman -- turned around to face the wall.
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 December 2012 00:37 (thirteen years ago)
Those glasses! Just as perfect. Definitely not the standard issue horn rims my dad remembered from the sixties when he was a young officer --as he put it, "We called them 'birth control glasses,' because if you wore them, no woman would want to look at you."

one of my favorite moments, vv subtle, is when baldwin and JEJ are making small talk about baldwin's family when they first meet at langley, and mctiernan does a slow tension zoom in on both of them, bc clearly baldwin just wants to get to talking about the submarine.
