Well, a search for the illustrator brought up this, which is gorgeous:

Also this:

and this:

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2726/1471/1600/roberts2.jpg

Not done in the exact same style though. I know I've seen other stuff in that style before but can't place it.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 6 October 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

the style i'm talking about seems to be a '50s and early '60s american spin on italian futurism and cubism.

louise jaguar (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 6 October 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

this futurist piece from 1931 (ceramic tiles by Corrado Cagli and Dante Baldelli) is the exact same color scheme as the last cliff roberts piece you posted!

There's what looks like some Miro influence in the big full-color ones.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 6 October 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

Also maybe Matisse, Calder

(i'm cringing that your links are broken because i was going to post those too and i had uploaded them to photobucket because i knew blogger doesn't like hotlinking)

louise jaguar (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 6 October 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

i've always dug this illustration from the stage deli in nyc (it used to be on their take-out bags, which i know because i had one and kept it for many years). the restaurant dates back to 1937, and i think the artwork might too...

Gene Deitch, the American animator and illustrator (and father of underground artist Kim Deitch), drew in this style a lot in the 1950s(sorry the image is tiny + blurry, it was the best example I cld find on a quick search of google):

http://www.allaboutjazz.com/articles/gdeitch01.jpg

The good news is that Fantagraphics published a big hardcover of his jazz illustrations, you might even find it cheapish:

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 6 October 2006 05:24 (nineteen years ago)

Something similar by Mad's Maddest Artist Don Martin (from 1953!):

Is the earlier (1921 to 1945-ish) work of George Grosz too tenuous a connection or influence?

http://www.deutsche-bank-art.com/art/05/assets/images/k19860952.jpg

I'm thinking maybe the work of Grosz infused with American jazz and French existentialism.

gerald had many parents (including dr seuss), but deitch was one of the animators.

That top one really reminds me of something but I can't place what.

Has anyone said Jim Flora yet? There's a gallery of mainly album art here, or this is closer in style to the first image. Maybe not quite what you're after though.

Paul Rand also designed one of the most beautiful logos of all time:

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/4/4c/91px-UPSLogo.png

the fact that it has been replaced by this:

saddens and angers me.

There should be a thread on corporations ditching classic logos for newer logos that are duds.

paul rand was the ibm logo too, right? i love his stuff.

There should be a thread on corporations ditching classic logos for newer logos that are duds.

i've noticed that the gap has gone back to its old logo (the very round bubbly helvetica letters), which i've always liked much much much much better.

ram jam holder (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 7 October 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

Upon searching, my idea has been explored on several threads without a thread specifically designated to it.

Sorry to derail this thread. Carry on.

Xp guessing you want something less obvious/more trippy than yer average 19th C natural history illustrations but here's a link anyway:

Also GIS audobon.

i like all kinds of botanic and natural history illustrations, i just don't know the big names
this is really neat http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/art-nature-imaging/collections/endeavour-botanical/

I don't know names either really. Meant to link to the main collections page instead of Reeves specifically!

Did you know Edward Lear drew birds? I used to have two of his macaw prints on my wall, come to think of it I wonder what happened to them?

idk i found it by googling jazz puzzle

lag∞n, Friday, 3 August 2012 04:29 (thirteen years ago)

upon further inspection it does seem to be signed by flora tho

lag∞n, Friday, 3 August 2012 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, it's one of his - he was an innovative dude who pretty much paved the way a lot of other similar artists. one of my favorites.

Darin, Friday, 3 August 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

ledge i like the look of the second link just fine, but it's more art than scientific illustration. i like illustrations that are intended for taxonomic or otherwise dull scientific purposes, but look beautiful. haeckel is basically perfect. i like abstract prehistoric people too, like this

ledge, Friday, 3 August 2012 22:56 (thirteen years ago)

i admit that was a bit of a shocker, but i have been poring over old encyclopedias enough to find some pretty choice illustrations of the inner workings of people's private parts and it's initially kinda O_O but then you remember bodies are bodies and we all have one nbd.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 3 August 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

well yeah and i'm sure it's helpful for someone to read about! there is something highly appealing about the exemplary technique married to a purpose. went to the bp portrait awards and the level of detail was astonishing, there was a 4m square oil painting of a close-up of a face that was indistinguishable from a photo even on close inspection, the technique was absolutely unbelievable but to what end? it just seemed pointless. not with these illustrations - and of course they're beautiful too.

ledge, Friday, 3 August 2012 23:04 (thirteen years ago)

exactly. i like the combination of practical "this is how this thing works" or "this is what this thing you will never see looks like" illustration with artful shapes and colors and whatnot.

haeckel is basically perfect in this regard, but i was kind of just wondering if people hate him because of his bad science/he was a disgusting racist or whether people hold him in high regard for his illustrations or what. i haven't really found much about it beyond wikipedia and one blog post about darwinist dictators, so i thought i would ask here.

ledge, Friday, 3 August 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

Seriously, I could look at his illustrations ALL GODDAMNED DAY, which is why I was very curious about his scientific legacy and whether or not he is a reviled character or what.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 3 August 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

LL: from what I've read, Haeckel does seem to put in regular appearances in histories of science, if only for all his coinages. On the whole, I don't think he pushed evolutionary theory substantially forward, but on the other hand he did quite a bit to popularize it; his work as a naturalist was solid if not spectacular; his views on race were thoroughly awful but characteristic of many of his peers and predecessors. What he can probably be blamed most for as an individual is "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny," which I'm pretty sure I got taught without correction in high school.

bentelec, Saturday, 4 August 2012 00:33 (thirteen years ago)

Apparently he is also now a sex zombie.

bentelec, Saturday, 4 August 2012 00:33 (thirteen years ago)

hey LL i like this blog pretty well:

http://venusmilk.tumblr.com/

it has been following different tangents for a while, now, but used to near-exclusively post old botanical illustrations. if you scroll/archive all the wayyyy back to may they start appearing w/some regularity. there are some v much in the vein of the one upthread:

http://www.payer.de/amarakosa/amarak02208.jpg

& some at weird tangents in terms of interpretation:

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1m4oyYZ3h1qhtuebo1_400.jpg

i have some OG botanist illustration postcards that i got from the wellcome collection, in london, too, a place that might be worth checking out.

& the pomegranate dwg above is from this specific, hypnotic site: http://www.payer.de/amarakosa/amara205c.htm

http://www.payer.de/amarakosa/amara02399.jpg

lastly kinda related but not is this nice picture i found recently. i don't love everything else the artist did but this is so pretty & seems like a kinda thoughtful modern non-retro take on the above:
