A) The Rodney Dangerfield film featuring a young Robert Downey Jr: Classic or Dud?

B) I'm going back to school to finish my degree: sign that I've lost my shit completely judging by past comments on school, or smart move?

Ally, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

going back to school is great.

jel, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The hardest part of that film to watch is that guy who plays Rodney's son. Yick. Thumbs up for Paulie playing the chauffeur.

Going back to school = wise b/c the economy has already lost its shit.

SCHOOOL IS A TIME TO LOAF ABOUT LIEK THE TART YOU ARE. KEEP EM CLOSED PELASE

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say it's a smart move, if only because it makes it easier to switch jobs/demand raises. But then, I would say that.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Ally, but here would be as good aplace as any to mention that my wife got into a local opera program. This fall, she's going back to school, too.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If the government sends me a letter saying I'm a sucker (i.e I don't gets the job I applied for) I may likely go back to school too. In something useless, as I already have a useful undergrad degree and it doesn't do me any good anyway.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats to both Ally and Dan's wife, I hope you do wicked.

Me, I have no hope of improving my station in life because I'm a chronic daydreamer, always have been. Back to school = impossible. These days I'm so lazy it's like.....

Let me put it this way: I'm so lazy I don't even wipe my ass anymore...I just visualize it and walk out.

Ramosi, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Too stressed by three assignments due in five days to answer this question reasonably. I feel like saying "Argh! Nooo! Don't do it!" but really it usually isn't all that difficult or bad. And it is a smart move.

Nicole, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm going back to school as well, i'm excited about it. i can't wait to be an eager little geek again.

di, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I'd dropped out of elementary school so I could go back and finish it now.

Kris, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A) Classic for the farting armpits on the diving board & Sam Kinison (of course).

B) Classic because it's what I'm doing, after going thru the motions (go to college because it's What You Do After High School --> get booted for being stoopid --> try out the real world --> figure out that finishing school is where it's at --> suck it up & go back --> get degree --> get Real, Satisfying Job and a Sense of Accomplishment via the degree). At least, I'm hoping that I am able to achieve that final thing.

So, yeah, it's all good. A lot of work, sure, but ultimately very, very good. (Which reminds me - need to do some homework!)

David Raposa, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a friend collecting unemployment checks from his apartment on the Upper West Side. Such are they benefits of being "fired."

bnw, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you already know what I think about school, Ally, but I'm happy to hear you're finishing.

Josh, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can someone help me straighten out my Longfellow?

, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Other great line: "I'm so out of shape, I'm going to leave my body to science fiction".

I must admit I only know of Dangerfield through this film. What else has he been in? And who is the guy who plays the evil English teacher? ("i have one question. In 93 parts" or whatever it is).

Regarding the second part of the question...no, I wouldn't consider it now. Other people think I have a great ability to retain concepts and facts but I know that my mind isn't as sharp as it used to be. Pretty scary considering that I'm just 31.

MarkH, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Caddyshack
2. Simpsons episode with Burns' son.

Josh, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and now that awful Sum41 band have nicked the denoument of Back to school for one of their videos, the bastards.

That Longfellow line is one of my favourites evah!

chris, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes! Billy Madison is clearly the best of the back to school genre.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave, you never told me you're going to FINISHING SCHOOL! You ponce.

Josh, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
this was on tv tonight. I never noticed before that finnegans wake is first on their reading list (though I thought I saw an apostrophe on the chalkboard!). which makes it not only the best back to school movie, but the best james joyce movie!

someday the critical community will recognize jess's vision.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 16 June 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
i'm thinking of going back to school in sept, as i just found out that if i am a quebec resident (which i am of course) and i become a full-time student i can go to photography school for free! should i?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I would go if I could go for free!

El Diablo Curmudgeonbotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, could be fun! Just get that side job at least.

I admit I was sorta hoping Rodney Dangerfield had googled himself or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe his clone will?

El Diablo Curmudgeonbotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw yeah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

this is kind of exciting for me, i've been thinking about going back to school (for somethign a little more academic), but this is a very nice opportunity. i mean it's free! plus i get to learn all about the technical side of photography (the program is very hands-on/technical), which as a self-taught shutterbug with no darkroom access is very cool.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
1. s1ocki, I didn't know this!!!!

2. I would like to go back to school, please.

3.Revive!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I must admit I only know of Dangerfield through this film. What else has he been in?

The woefully unappreciated Meet Wally Sparks (also starring Debi Mazar in the Fran-Drescher-in-UHF role and David Ogden Stiers as the uptight southern governor).

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago)

EASY FUCKING MONEY

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago)

the only thing that I remember about meet wally sparks was the fact that the movie posters had to be altered to make rodney dangerfields eyes look white, rather than the glassy red-eyed stare that he always has.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Best scene in the film: Robert Downey Jr. heckling divers with air-horns and mirrors.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago)

"Dad, you can't get NASA to do your astronomy homework!"

Back to uni in 3 weeks! Can't wait, one whole day away from work! Another MA! yay!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago)

i didn't go to photography school but i am considering applying to do a master's next year.

also best scene in meet wally sparks--dangerfield to squirrel that's just run up his pants and bit him: "get your own nuts!"

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:20 (twenty years ago)

back to school!!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Calculus not as difficult as first suspected. Got a really good professor for that one. The other class is crazy, I am not sure exactly what we're supposed to be learning except that the instructor is a very strange, strange guy with a ludicrous resume and a lot of weird shit in his house.

Thornton Melon: What's your favorite subject?
Bubbles: Poetry.
Thornton Melon: Really? Well, maybe you can help me straighten out my Longfellow.

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 August 2006 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

i stand by meet wally sparks.

someday the critical community will recognize jess's vision.

the jokes in back to school are on par with any of groucho marx's best lines.

el borracho (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 August 2006 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

six years pass...

My oldest kid is going to the first year of elementary school. OMG
Also, she already reads books on her own. OMG
I am scared. OMG

Nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 30 August 2012 14:30 (twelve years ago)

one year passes...

Lol. This year she skipped the second grade. Went straight to third grade. I am so proud. She didn't get the "brilliant gene" from me.
Now my youngest is in the first grade.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 12 September 2013 08:12 (eleven years ago)

six years pass...

took about 5.5 years to get to my final final exam, which is in two hours. my first real degree at the age of 52. i will miss what has been a regular part of my life lately, but can not wait to actually be a working registered environmental health specialist

such perseverance! congratulations

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 19 March 2020 20:01 (five years ago)

That's great. I find degrees later in life very heartening (like the mom in Hoop Dreams).

clemenza, Thursday, 19 March 2020 20:09 (five years ago)

thanks y'all. as great as it feels being finished, it is really odd not being able to celebrate with anybody. Sister was coincidentally going to be around this weekend, but now will not be. Can't go out and meet friends, obviously. I did get a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rosé that i'll have to crack open i guess. a month ago i thought i was gonna vacation somewhere like Eastern Mexico, but now i'm just going to apply for jobs and see if i get any nibbles.
