it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a new nbc tv show called Heroes

yeah, so nbc sucked me in with The Unit and now they're doing it again with Heroes. who would've thought?? but after watching 3 eps of this show, i'm sold. oh, it totally steals from Lost, aesthetically and otherwise - has many plotlines and characters, has a "mystery" element at its core, jumps around in time, lots of hot people, bit of violence, bit of gore. plus, regular joes all shocked about their cool SUPERPOWERS! i like it!!

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

they've even incorporated a comicbook into it. and japanese subtitles. by which i mean, i am also intrigued by its use of the mid-2000s cool-geek culture.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

We gotta thread going in the comix board, too. It took three weeks to really drag me in, but finally they're hitting their stride. I'm even starting to give a half a shit about the junkie oracle art fag.

I think the comicbook is the most amazing thing about it so far. Normally, if you have a comicbook in a superhero setting it brings up all kinds of questions that get left unasked and drive me crazy. This time they're actually asking those questions. Like the kid with the red towel around his neck watching the nurse jump off the jungle gym.

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

ah, i thought there had to be a thread somewhere, but i never check comix board, tho i do like comix, just not super 'into' them. i guess i will have to read and maybe participate on that thread though! yeah, totally otm about them finally hitting their stride this week. and the comic book within the show is fascinating stuff.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

I watched the last half of this show last night with my dad. I want more! He said that cheerleader girl jumped off a building and shoved her ribs back in!!! The guys following the comic/destiny are my favorite storyline though.

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

DOWNLOADED ALL EPISODES - WATCHED ALL BUT EPISODE "00". SO GOOD.

Hiro is definitely my favorite character, not just because he has the way coolest power. Wants-to-fly guy is totally not going to fly until the season (possibly series?) finale, when all HOPE is LOST. I kind of can't believe this show is on network tv, I mean, that person was PEGGED to the wall with like SCISSORS and MARKERS and shit, blood everywhere!

QUERSTOINS:

Does anyone think "Sylar" is actually "Las Vegas Niki" or whatever (mirror girl) when she blacks out?

What's up with the black man who the pilot from LOST couldn't mind-read? Is he blocking it? Does he know who he is and is just all zen-like mind-blanking it? WTF.

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 October 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

shit this sounds like something i should start torrenting now... damn.

Roz (Roz), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Last night's episode was kind of slow, but I think I like floaterboy now that they seem to be implying that he's not a floater so much as a mimic, or something.

Also, I'm pretty sure cheerleader's dad is Sylar, who I'm also pretty sure is eating the brains of the sub-X-Men or whatever we want to call them, to take their powers. If he eats her brain though this is bad news because he will be indestructible.

Did anybody who watched this get the impression that junkie artist guy is actually going to somehow CAUSE the nuclear boom? Cuz I did.

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Milo Ventimiglia=most unappealing actor in the entire universe

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed, and not just because of whatever's going on with his lip.

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, his whole "and I'M gonna save us" thing at the end seemed a bit too ominous...

ah, yes, emo-hair guy is a mimic! so he would also be able to see/draw the future if with junkie artist guy.

if sylar is claire's (adoptive) dad then why doesn't he eat her brainz? b/c his caring-father role seems to be a ruse. perhaps he's a henchman.

yeah.

but in a way, it's a pretty good call

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

I think my favorite thing about this show is it's subtle lack of subtlety. HINT HINT at guy being able to mimic other abilities by having him SAY "I think I can only do it when others are around" + later OMG TIME STOPPED CONVO w/ ill-advisedly facial-haired Hiro.

I loved that, after Hiro in last(?) episode was like "a hero doesn't use his powers for monetary gain", goes on Vegas gambling spree, only to get DECKED. NBC be karma policin'.

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Milo Ventimiglia=most unappealing actor in the entire universe

Yes. He reminds me of a creepy older brother of one of my friends from middle school. He never showered and ended up going to a juvenile detention center for beating up a girl in his class.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

subtle lack of subtlety: i love this! it's a tone that suits the show's subject matter, i find. haha, and it let them put hiro and friend in rainman suits and do the escalator shot n everything. it's like "well, this is obv too easy but it would still be great! hell, why not - this is a show about superheroes!" over-the-top tv = the best tv.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

OH! Did you guys notice in the "previously on Heroes" bit that they changed the face of already-dead Prof. Chandra Suresh from inexplicable random famous guy to some other not-famous guy?

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure if I should be posting to this thread or the ILC one!

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

i did not notice that b/c i missed the first 5 minutes :(

yeah, i'm having the same dillema... ilc one started first and there is comix talk, so i think i'm going to go with that for the most part.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

ILC thread also has more pictures of soul patches worse than Hiro's.

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Hi ILE, last night's episode of Heroes was really exciting! I said a bunch of stuff on the ILC thread, so I'll be brief: psychic cop regaining powers through being a pimp w/ his wife - cuet, Rep Nathan Petrelli D-NY is the Superman of the show, but Hiro is still my favorite.

polar bear flashback episode (nickalicious), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

N Petrelli also great for zing-pwning blackmailers by getting 2 more million of their dollars! total superman smile too.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

also: the paradox of white contact lenses - always cheesy yet always effective!

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, do I post here or on the comix board?

Anyway, I just caught up with all the episodes - first three were a little bland but set things up nicely and this last two were awesome!

The latest one is grebt - flying future Congressman and setting up connections and so on. Also, the less I see of documentary-voiceover Indian scientist and his art-school neighbour the better.

About cheerleader's dad - why clean out telepathic cop's memory over just 2 days but not his powers? I'm not sure if he's as devious as he seems. He might turn out to have been working with Chandra Suresh - we already know his research went into some pretty extensively.

I don't think Nikki's husband is a teleporter - it kinda seems like invisibility to me. The kid probably has powers too and keeping it a secret. He seems to know too much, but that could just as easily be due to him being a boy genius.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't been reading the thread much, because I haven't been watching the series, but HEROES THE TV SHOW over on ILC is large and bountiful, yes.

There was this reeeaaally long commercial for Friday Night lights right before the last like 6 minutes of show, and I was all "this better be kickASS" and okay then! There's no way Niki's dead, Micah the kid did this laying-on-hands looking thing in the preview? I mean, both of his parents are badasses!

polar bear flashback episode (nickalicious), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

I am bored, so here my friends is a list of plot points oh-so-sneakily hijacked from LOST:

*vaguely ominous group of others who are aware of our heroes
*junkie trying to make right
*infiltrator (Eden vs Ethan)
*black father/son duo, reunited after being separated & mom who unjustly kept them apart
*"daddy issues"
*waivering faith in their mission (Mohinder and/or Hiro vs Locke)
*comic book in earliest episodes used as foreshadowing device

polar bear flashback episode (nickalicious), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I'm thinking now maybe Cheerleader Dad is NOT in cahoots w/ Sylar and is maybe some kind of extreme anti-Sylar task force leader? Something.

polar bear flashback episode (nickalicious), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

ooh, great episode! so much happened! one of my favourite things about this show is HOW IT LOOKS - all the comic-booky angles and how the colours and textures seem both rich and kind of flat at the same time. it's pretty amazing and really adds to the tone.

i like it when nick gets bored and makes lists.
yeah, i couldn't help but compare it to Lost too, for sure. i find it way more fun though, esp the hiro storyline (i still love Lost though, in a dif way.)

re: cheerleader dad - yeah, at the end when pixie girl told him that the message was 'save the cheerleader', he seemed surprised/worried, so who knows who's side he's on...

i'm stoked on seeing what mica's powers are.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Bah! I missed this last night :(

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

it's LOST lite

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

i would've agreed with that 2 weeks ago, but now i totally disagree! its mystery is perhaps less heavy than Lost's but it's only just begun and yeah, maybe it has less potential for creepiness than Lost does, but it's a different kind of show and i don't think it's following the same tone that Lost does. which i think exempts it from being called 'lite' - while Lost could be argued to be heavy in a kind of psychoanalytic way, this is heavy in a pop pyschology way - it's comicbooky! perhaps it's more like Lost alternate dimension, with more exciting camera angles.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Add to my list of LOST rip-offs above:

*wheelchair twist

This was a good episode, although I think it's weird they never adressed psychic cop pilot-from-LOST guy's freakout at the convenience store. Also was a little disappointed Hiro & Ando and DL & Micah didn't hook-up & travel together.

Prediction: that painting Peter is trying to get from Linderman (Isaac's painting) will tell them where Claire is (maybe a pic of her uniform w/ high school's name on it?). And I am warming up to Milo Ventiwhatever as an actor, based mostly on the dinner w/ press guy scene.

ps press guy seemed vaguely Benry LinusGale-esque, like the director said "talk like that new bad guy on LOST".

diebold with a vengeance (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and I'm not sure if what Micah did to the phone was a physical reaction thing or if he is like communicate-with-machines-Neo kid? Whatever, I like him, and wish he hadn't told "Jessica" where he was (although I am looking forward to DL squeezing her haert again).

diebold with a vengeance (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm enjoying this a lot more than Lost lately, Lost has had too much bunny-shaking go-nowhereness.

Beth S. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

I tried to watch this for about ten minutes and changed the channel to an infomercial.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

MORE L O S T similarities:

- white robed funeral on beach
- accelerated introduction of new characters while leaving many mysteries unanswered

This episode was kind of slow but still very watchable. The whole Hiro/girl in diner/Sylar bit was really excellent (that kid that plays Hiro is awesome, I love him), and it's nice to finally understand a bit of what Cheerleader Dad Guy is all about. Also OMG waif-girl is apparently a mutant/whatever also! And it is so obvious new radiation guy is going to be involved in the big nucyoolar explosion. But what happened to Hiro, did he save that girl? And will Hott Indian Guy come back to America now, and will his dead sister come with him? And what is Isaac painting this time?

Hooray for fun show!

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I loved how psychic cop & radiation guy were all "big bald badass Haitian" rather than "big bald badass black guy", even though he like never speaks.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

I guess they didn't want the slower audience members to think DL/wall-walkin-thru-guy was sinister baddie.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

That was my thought, too - DL is clearly NOT Haitian.
