Banning rubbish TV Quiz channels! It's not going to happen, is it?

Nobody wants them.

But the powers that be like the easy money.

So, this is a tax on people with more money than sense.

Say you can't sleep, and like to watch a few pop vids to pass the time.

Nope. you get some girl, excited to be presenting TV show, asking you to name "a famous british film" and if it's on her list, you get £200. If their switchboard decides to put you through as opposed to just taking yr money for nothing.

i nearly rung and entered the other night when i was drunk, fortunately my phone has some kind of premium rate block

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Keeping them to the channels that show them 24 hours a day would be fine. I'd still have to explain to my mates how they work, which gets frustrating, but there'd be music videos at 4 in the morning and channel % might put the trashy US/Aus soaps back on.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Erm, channel 5

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

They are the scourge of late night telly! There's literally nothing to watch after 1 AM any more, where at least you used to have some rubbish magazine show hosted by Craig Charles or something. Or Dial-a-Date!

On a similar note, has anyone seen "Gimp" on The Hits? While music videos play, a man occupying the bottom right corner of the screen performs whatever demeaning acts (of a non-sexual nature) the viewers text in and tell him to. It's extremely depressing.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

haha. when i saw it the clue was ?irthday and they were basically telling you the answer. the guy who rang in said "daylight"

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

i called one of them once. It was the first time i'd seen such a show, and i was drunk, and thought "wow, this question is so easy, there must be nobody watching it at this hour, i'm gonna be riched!" The call terminated, and i clicked...

Slumpman (Slump Man), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

yeah wtf @ the hits and tmf for being shitty quiz channels after midnight?

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

It's the logical conclusion of Shooting Stars innit.

"Name a junction off the M6."
"23."
"Sorry, it was junction 4."

Except now it's a legitimate question.

ITV need the money. Ant & Dec got drubbed by the Hoodmeister on Saturday, ratings-wise.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking of trying to work for one of them. I even reinstalled my digibox so I could watch them.

"Full Monty!"

three weeks pass...
News: Quiz Call (the first 'quiz' channel, started by Channel 4) is to GO! 15th November.

Off Freeview, onto Satellite, and out of my eyesight!

HRAY!

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 November 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Other news:

You know how "I'm a celeb" would be shown on e4 overnight, basically celebs wandering around, looking at each others spots, while the sound dips?

This year, that's not going to be on. Nope, just more quiz.

For once, I'd rather watch celebrities doing nothing much than some TVPresenter wishIwas getting overexcited about the british films beginning with "W".

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 6 November 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

I know - but the film is all about people being given White feathers and therefore someone (e.g. Mark) could get the title wrong.

So how will this be handled now?

"Hi, Chris Tarrant here! If you'd like to be a contestant on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, send five pounds to PO box etc...."

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

The industry rumour is this:

ITV have done this so that they can appear whiter than white whilst fucking up every other operator in the industry (many of whom have no scruples at all). They will be exonerated and the light will be cast on the other operators. The reason for doing it early in the week is they want to try get the lucre on saturday.

Ed, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Cast that light, baby!! Cast that light!

No they aren't. AFAIK a lot of the ones that do the content on other channels are going strong.

Ed, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

The reason for doing it early in the week is they want to try get the lucre on saturday.

And because their bad financial results were due out today, too.

Forest Pines, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

OK, so the ITV and Channel 4 ones are off-air.

How do the 'music channels' square the license to run their channels? DO they have a minimum 'music' content? (Meaning, TMF and the one on chanel 018, freeview) ?

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

God, it's a plague over here as well.

The answers are pretty stupid and far-fetched ("words beginning with WATER" : one of the right answers was COD - no, the word watercod ("waterkabeljauw") doesn't exist in Dutch either, I doublechecked because I almost didn't believe they'd do this), and the callers, I don't know where they find them, even more stupid (Looking for European capitals: "France!" "No, we're looking for capital cities! Try again!" "oh, sorry, I misunderstood. Norway!").

Great entertainment, I love nagging about the stupidity of the human race. :-)
