Question for females of whatever species

Doesn't it somewhat slightly piss you off that the range of female sexual activity is limited to only 'catching' and not 'pitching'? I mean, guys can do both, they have a plug AND A socket. I'm not specifically talking 'penis envy', just 'range-of-possibility envy'

dave q, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What have you got against strap ons and fingers?

N., Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course biology = destiny, otherwise we'd live forever, right?

Oh, and to chicks who say, "Well YOU'LL never know what it's like to give birth", I take a massive dump almost every day, without having to carry it around for months!

dave q, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am more pissed off that I cannot grow a beard. (PS No 'funny' comments please)

Emma, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In case it was not clear, I am off the human species.

Emma, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma if you meant "of" rather than "off" there it was a v. good typo!

i am off dave q. however i have never been particularly on him!!

katie, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

must resist...

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes you bloody well must :)

katie, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I don't do typos very often so when I do I might as well do good ones. As it goes humanity is looking OK right now.

Emma, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why doesn't anyone ever take dave q's threads seriously?

N., Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But we do! We're just laughing too hard at the way he puts things, for he has the gift of the gab. :-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder if dave q is as versitile as he makes himself out to be.

Sean, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't help imagining Emma in Life Of Brian.

Ally C, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not really, i totally enjoy the action i am "limited" to, and if it did start to feel limiting i would buy a strappon.

di, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tongues are good too.

But taking Dave's question a bit more seriously, yes, sometimes I have wished that I had a penis so that I could have that sort of sex with a woman. What's far worse though is feeling lovey-dovey feelings for a boy and not being able to express them physically because he has no pussy to lick.

toraneko, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of the greatest songs ever written was by Chris Knox... it's called "The Women Inside Of Me".. off his first solo record "Seizure" (and also on the U.S. compilation called "Meat"). It's the only song I've ever heard where a guy admits he wished to feel what sex felt like as a woman.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To answer the question... well, fuck, I'm just jealous of dogs and cats because they can actually LICK THEIR OWN.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this openness kruschen salts attitude towards sex is driving me nuts. basically i think because i have been screeched at most of my life for being sexually active, at the same time that i'm accused of being a prude because sex bores me. frankly, it's about as interesting to me to speculate about what sex feels like for a boy as what it feels like for a hazlenut to get eaten. and as for whether pornography is legal or illegal, they might as well make climbing mt everest illegal, it would effect me as much. I'm not saying pornography doesn't have the pornographic effect on me, i painstakingly note. but what irritates me is this fucking sex talk, where was it when i was being accused of being a slut? it doesn't seem to add up to much.

maryann, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always make the most indiscreet posts late at night. Might have something do to with coming home from the bar...

No penis envy here, I'm well acquainted with the toy store and have no problem improvising. But...I sometimes envy men's ROLE in sex, I imagine (erroneously?) that it must be easier than women's...this is probably total bullshit, as about a dozen of you sensitive types will rush to tell me. Modesty permits no further detail, sorry if this isn't quite as clear as mud--have no clearer thoughts to offer as I'm muddling through it, myself.

Pyth, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry i didn't mean any of what i wrote (i say this to sensitive boys referred to by Pyth, for example). i only meant that perhaps one could be permissive silently. and perhaps this would be preferrable to openness which is not quite actually openness sometimes.

maryann, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Doesn't it somewhat slightly piss you off that the range of female sexual activity is limited to only 'catching' and not 'pitching'?
reading thus far, i thought surely you meant not that it *is* that way but that it tends to be like that, to have developed and be represented like that, but yr next sentence; I mean, guys can do both, they have a plug AND A socket makes it sound like you *are* claiming it's that way thru biology or whatever. I guess I just don't really understand. I feel too overwhelmed by this question, which brings up alot of things for me which are complex and "personal", but i would like to say that (even though you specifically de-centred this regarding penises), they seem too often (and here) to be given so musch weight, like as if it's only *really* penetration if it's done with a dick. I mean even to the insane degree that it's common for "sex" to mean "penis inside vagina". Why limit your questioning to women - don't you think men are limited by these (cultural) tendencies for defined roles, for limits for women, ie for women = penetrated/submitting/soft and men = penetrator/conqueror/hard ??? okay i guess it's because you envisage men as receivers (or whatever) ('cause they have "a socket"), but you really don't see that women can be (and often are) the "plugs"??? i mean it doesn't take much to penetrate a man's "socket", or women's "sockets", or mouths.....this is just an initial confused-ish response so please cut some slack with how terribly convoluted it is. or (/&) is it just from a place of miss-understandingness?

elizabeth anne marjorie, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

elizabeth said i should post here. i don't know why; i'm not a girl. i think Dave's question was very strange and it says more about what he considers to be acceptable sexual practices than the matter of biology he's pretended its about. girls have got lots of "plugs", as he calls them, but he only considers the male one to be of any value. Perhaps he needs a good fisting.

Very few of you have criticised him for this massive overlook. if i was a feminist studies graduate i'd say something like "this is a symptom of a phallocentric society" but i'm not so instead i'll say "most of you would be very boring lays".

hamish, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

assumption that [non-boring lays = virtuoso range of technique] = another symptom of a phallocentric society?

far as i can see, dave q asks a question which says (like many of his questions) "OK, here are my assumptions, i want and expect you to disagree w.me, to take them apart, to teach me where i am wrong if you can." DQ will hate me for saying it heh, but actually i think he is one of the most RESPECTFUL posters on the board, in respect of opinions or practices not his own, ie he is genuinely curious about them, not merely strategically and/or repressively pluralistic.

mark s, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[non-boring lays = virtuoso range of technique]

no no no no i'm saying [boring lay = making expectations about which sex should be doing which things based on what your culture has told you instead of what you want and thinking that female sexual activity is limited to only 'catching' (to use a Q-term)]

hamish, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can you consider *this* post of dave q's to be respectful????

i certainly don't, in fact i think it's an offensive view and it seems to be one he actually has. okay so it's good if he's up for (and expecting to) have his mind changed but even if that's so, it's still strikes me as far from "respectful".

dave q, why are women more limited as to sexual practices than men? i mean, women surely are confined or oppressed or restricted sexually, to a tragic degree but IT IS NOT because of our biology, which is how you seem to be framing it. I mean, do you envy being able to orgasm more often (& with less mess?), or whatever (ie. the many things female biology might mean that men can't experience the same)?

elizabeth anne marjorie, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think part of what Mark S is identifying is Dave Q's tendency to ask a question or make his point and then step back from it and not argue back. I find that quite admirable, and rare in someone so opinionated, though if everyone followed the same policy arguments would rather die on their feet.

N., Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would really like a response from dave q. ??

elizabeth anne marjorie, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, since you asked - being a straight male and all, talk of 'culturally-determined roles' is moot, as my perspective is going to be closely aligned with the dominant paradigm. ('Doing what society expects' - to paraphrase Barnes in 'Platoon', "I AM society".) Sticking your dick in something is significant because society says it is, meaning, even if you've managed to create a sort of utopian free space where such things are more fluid, you are going to be affected in some way by the dominant culture, of which I am part of. So if 'fucking' something, as opposed to fisting it, felching it etc., becomes important due to this self-fulfilling prophecy, then it becomes an acceptable metaphor for things, then life imitates metaphor, and anyone who can comfortably identify with this is happy because society is organised along lines (metaphors) that seem natural to them. So I want to know, what's it like to be outside the paradigm? I.E., men get to FUCK stuff. They can fuck you up, fuck you over, fuck your eyes out, etc. Recon, strike, leave a big mess behind. Literally, figuratively.

dave q, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I feel the patriarchal idea of woman-as-lack that dave q edges up to above in a cultural sense, or in relation to identity, empathy and representation, but very much don't feel it in relation to not being able to do the culturally loaded physical fuck. That is, I have no bodily or psychological sense of the absence of a literal penis, and to be honest I've never even wondered what it might be like to have/do in that paradigm. Maybe that's my personal lack of imagination, although I suspect not; just cause some phallocentric modes of thought have seen that binary as all-important doesn't mean it has to be operationally significant for any individual woman. Metaphorially, figuratively, though, it is socially/ideologically significant for Womyn/whatever.

Ellie, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

with all this clever talk of political meaning and gender roles and phallocentricity and whatnot, something massively obvious is being left out. that is, last time i checked, most women can't

1) have an orgasm from fucking someone with a strapon 2) have an orgasm from fistfucking someone 3) have an orgasm from fingering someone

and so on. there are some exceptions to 1), it's true, but very few to 2) and 3).

so it's a little ridiculous to talk about the power structures and so on when you haven't even talked about the fact that when a girl is fingering or penetrating someone, she's not getting the same kind of sexual feedback that a guy gets from having his dick in someone, while OTOH, guys can usually come from penetrating a vagina or anus, and many guys can come from getting penetrated up the ass if the circumstances are right.

"doesn't it s.s.p.y.o. that guys can often orgasm from getting penetrated or penetrating, but women don't usually have the option of orgasming by penetrating?"

one answer: "well, that's true, but women can often come by being penetrated and even more often by being stimulated clitorally, so it's a wash, innit?"

condiments, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus I would imagine that not all penetration is created equal. And have, in fact.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

when a woman is on top in a penetration-sexual-situation, is she still "catching"? cos it feels more like fucking someone than getting fucked, to me. engulfing, more than receiving.

di, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YOWZA

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes I think that maybe being outside the cultural meaning giving norm strata whatever just results in boredom, that's what it means when they say 'lying on your back and thinking of england', in the end everything is like a big 'so what' that goes on over the top of you. Sorry, tracer hand. I mean, even your body goes on over the top of you. but maybe that is just a psychological problem also experienced by men. maybe only by alienated, feminine men though bla bla bla bla bla bla

maryann, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure what you're apologizing about maryann? I meant that getting your coochie taken care of probably feels different than your butt would, so I'm jealous of that. But on the other thing - yeah, men can certainly get bored, too ("Word to muff" (c) Ramosi). Perhaps due to subtle "men do all the work" ideological capitulation from both parties? Oh I'm gonna get slammed for that one, but it happens.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm glad that you asked what i was apologising for. I was apologising for interrupting the afterglow of your yowza with my obviously fake jadedness.

maryann, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dammit maryann how many times since we were told to "get a room" have i told you not to interrupt my afterglow?!

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i was thinking about this subject on the bus yesterday (tho i hadn't seen this thread before) and questioning nature's logic. what if male and female could both give and receive in the same ways - if/how this would reflect on all species but particularly humans with regards to social behaviour and gender equality (sexually more than socially i suppose) - in turn reminded of Renton's quote in Trainspotting (still fresh in my mind from viewing the other week) "In the future there'll be no men, no women, just wankers - sounds fucking great to me". Did nature really drop the ball on this one?

(oh god, Mondays...)
