What Are You Listening To: 2006 Santa Ana Winds + Election Paranoia edition

Midterm election chaos and the giant brush fire in the San Jacinto Mountains got me listening to:

Quartz - Satan's Serenade
Acid Mothers Temple - Power House Of Holy
Klaus Schulze - Cyborg
The Long Blondes - Someone To Drive You Home

But really what I want to hear is the new Tom Waits album...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Melvins and Big Business set from their current tour. Loud and pissed-off, ergo great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

3 by An Pierlé - Helium Sunset & Live Jet Set With Orchestra & Mud Stories
&
Various - The all Angels Concerts (rec. 1999, 2000, 2001).

The latter's improv.
The former(s), Belgian pop-rock.

Morning listening involving works by Anthony Pateras "Chromophore", Gloria Coates setting Celan to music (no surprises there, but ok) and "Still Life" mp3, to be found alongside this feauture, really does something (just a feeling) terrific with what should be, by now, forms that are tired/spent.

It was "Warzone". I think it might grow on me if I give it a chance.

Ian pace (piano) rocking it on Richard Barrett's 'Tract', and further works by Ferneyhough, Chris Dench and James Erber.

'Music is a better noise' by Essential Logic.

Bit rub 'Poesie pour pouvoir' for 3 orchestras and electronics by Boulez contains that slightly annoying fetish for icy surfaces that creeps in the 1980s on works such as 'Repons'.

More from Heinz Holliger - he is an oboist and the piece for that instrument is one of the highlights.

Brian Ferneyhough - "Missa brevis" for 12 voices - good, but not as good when I first heard it on a radio broadcast. Makes me think how the static really enhances..there's a (prob boring) ilm thread in here somewhere.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 20 November 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

The Sweetest Power Hits 2CD - The Sweet

This is, in parts -- particularly parts of the first CD where the big hits are! -- one really weird sounding compilation. I mean, the second CD with mostly hitless (though frequently rather rough sounding) material evidently is The Sweet,
now as for the first CD... huh, I do wonder! The instrumental parts of the songs (though *sometimes* somewhat-sorta different from how I remember them:) ain't too weird all the time, but the lead vocal does frequently feel, like, "this just cannot be Brian Connolly?!!"

Well, well. It sayeth on the cover: "(p)2001 TIM The International Music Company Ag, licenced from Carinco AG, CH" ...
...and now I take a closer look, heheh, track 10 on CD1 is credited thusly: "Love Is Like Oxygen" (Jean-Michel Jarre).

tiit (tiit), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

A different Sweet compilation today. 'For a change'!
16 tracks, the hits, early Chinn-Chapman ones as well as a 6:52 version of "Love Is Like Oxygen" (credited on this CD to Scott>/Griffin, 'for a change' ha) -- yesyesYES, these sound precisely the way I remember them from 30+ years ago...
