Donate to save a kitty

Received a message from a photographer acquaintance (kylecassidy.com, I think) that he's trying to raise money for a group in Philadelphia, City Kitties (www.citykitties.org), to amputate the leg of an abandoned kitten they found, along with a pair of kittens found in a dumpster.

Kabuki was found outside of a restaurant after being hit by something, meowing for attention. He right front leg will have to be amputated and she has an infection from where it drags when she moves.

The two kittens each need surgery to have an eye removed after being found in a bag in a dumpster - they're both unphotographable right now, it seems.

City Kitties is accepting Paypal donations (info@citykitties.org) and there might be a few ILXors who can help out.

If we donate enough, maybe we can get him two amputa*runs away*

(anyway, these people are going to save him. What's taking you?)

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 28 October 2006 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

sorry dude, there are people dying all over the place.

emsk ( emsk), Saturday, 28 October 2006 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

but there aren't cats killing people all over the place
dude

hijch (hijch), Saturday, 28 October 2006 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Being married to a severely allergic person, I beg to differ.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Saturday, 28 October 2006 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

If, because of magic, your housecat was suddenly bigger than you—he'd eat you without a second thought.
Yet there are many DOGS weighing more than 100 lbs and only occasionally do they eat their owners.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Saturday, 28 October 2006 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

I cannot say no to that face.

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 28 October 2006 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

why u break heart milo z?

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 29 October 2006 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

There are people dying, yes, but the $50 I had left in my Paypal account was going to something frivolous and now it's not.

I don't think I can objectively prioritize charitable donations, these people are doing something good and it deserves my support.

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 29 October 2006 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

cats don't kill people severely allergic to them all over the place; obviously you're husband isn't dead!!!!!! if your "housecat" was suddenly bigger than you he wouldn't be your housecat anymore, and he would probably still be your friend anyway. "occasionally" big cats may kill people, but i doubt there are many of them that make hunting raids into the village.
the point is its more rational to put your resources into saving a sad kitten before you put them into saving a sad person, given that "human nature" in some part will domesticate a species and then subject it to human filth and excess. and i'm sure the vets who are going to collect the bill for these kittens would agree.

hijch (hijch), Sunday, 29 October 2006 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, whelll, in a VAGUE sense,
i obviously don't know the situation!!!!!!

hijch (hijch), Sunday, 29 October 2006 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

I already regularly donate to one of those, you heartless b*st*rds, do you?

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 29 October 2006 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

nothing's worse than ppl who pretend like anyone who cares about animals is "wasting" valuable compassion they could be saving for people.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 29 October 2006 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

We're just teasing. Jeez.

Super Cub (Debito), Sunday, 29 October 2006 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

I mean you can't have a "save the kitty" thread and expect not to get some kind of flak. Just a little teasing.

Super Cub (Debito), Sunday, 29 October 2006 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

tuxedo cat means 2x donation multiplier!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 29 October 2006 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

I mean you can't have a "save the kitty" thread and expect not to get some kind of flak.

Yes, you can. Or you should, but whatever.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 30 October 2006 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

For other kitties who need your help, the Oregon Humane Society set up a kitty cam to watch them.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, you can. Or you should, but whatever.

Ideally, yes. But no one was particularly mean on this thread. I think it's perfectly reasonable for people to voice their opinion that people charities are more worthy of support than kitty charities. It's a perfectly legitimate point of view. If they want to do it in a jokey way that is not particularly mean or obusive, then what is the problem?

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

b/c no one wants their opinion? The thread wasn't titled "is it okay to donate to save a kitty?" so why butt in?

UNSOLICITED OPINIONS ON ILX SHOCKA!

John Justen will insert a ship in your cat for no additional fee (johnjusten), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Pecking order for charities in terms of public affection (UK):

1) Sick children (British)
2) Sick animals
3) Starving children (foreign)
4) Old people
5) People with mental problems
6) Asylum seekers

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

xpost, yes, obv. I was just answering the statement above.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously. I'm sure there are throusands of message boards around the internet where everyone would be 100% receptive to a save the kitty thread. This is not one of them.

xpost

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Donating to save a bunch of kittens' lives >>>>>>>>>> donating to buy Andrew a new server (sorry Andrew) but I don't recall there being that many unsolicited opinions all over that thread. Seriously, dude, shut the hell up and go donate to one of the charities you recommended.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

At first I thought that the original kitty was having two additional kitties removed from it. The entire concept of a tesseract-kitty was very disturbing to me.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

have you not noticed the cat love on ilx??

Ok

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

on a related note, it was the American Humane Society's Katrina efforts that received the majority of what little I could afford to donate last year.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

save the chickens!

timmy tannin (pompous), Monday, 30 October 2006 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

I love to save chickens. . . maybe wrapped in a tortilla with a bit of guac on top.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

I did expect a few "SAVE HUMANS PLZ" responses, and anywhere outside of ILE or twee.net, they'd have been more vicious. ILX loves it some cats.

It's difficult to balance where money should go - if you donate to a local homeless shelter, should you be helping people worse-off elsewhere? Is it morally justifiable to donate millions for an art museum expansion, when people are starving down the street? In this case, it goes to a specific need and something I care about, so fuck the haters, etc.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

I was sent an update on the kittens with a link to photos and updates on the Pirate Twins.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

I think charity, like politics, is highly personal. Unless you're a ga-fucking-bazillionaire like Gates or something then you better be ready for some justifying.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

god, ilx is the cat-lovingest board on the net, surely. what's that crackpot upthread thinking?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

ilx luvs dogs, too.

especially bee dogs.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

what's that crackpot upthread thinking?

Something along the lines of "PHEAR MY MIGHTY PHALLUS!"

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

I already donate to the LA Mission, the Red Cross (money and blood, when tattoos allow), and to the ASPCA, but I'm totally willing to fork over a little more for kitties such as these. Go wash your hat.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 30 October 2006 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

i actually broke into a local homeless shelter to steal money to donate to these kittens. i like my charity to be zero sum.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 30 October 2006 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

too much effort. Just feed the homeless to them.

B-But ILX has always taught me that I can only save kittens' lives by not masturbating.

Shit, if I'd known that I could give money instead…

chris j (chris j), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

There appears to be a loophole in that god dude's theory: what if you donate some money to citykitties every time you masturbate?

To safeguard the planet for future generations of cute kittens we must all offset our emissions.

chris j (chris j), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

OH SHIT DUDES THOSE EYE-LACKING KITTENS ARE CUTE AS HELL.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Thursday, 16 November 2006 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

SO CUTE

i would definitely give money to kitties with hurt legs and eyes before i'd go buy a fake-motion backlit waterfall picture with a tiger. which is another reason i have no fake-motion backlit waterfall pictures with tigers in them. it's all REALLY for the best.
