I think it's from the 80s. The joke is basically about how teachers make it really obvious who the smart and dumb kids are, and it's something like: "Jenny, Irene and Thomas, you'll be in the gold group. Matthew, Phillip and Margaret, you're in the silver group, and Jim, Tony and Ashley, you'll be the brown group."

"when i was in sixth grade, they told us when we got to junior high, we'd be either in track 1, track 2, or track 3. track 1's the smart kids, track 2's the normal kids, track 3's the dumb kids. AND WHADDYA THINK I GOT? HOW DO YOU THINK IT FEELS TO BE TOLD THAT YOU'RE DUMB, IN INK, WHEN YOU'RE ELEVEN YEARS OLD?"

That joke showed up in a 1980s "Life In Hell" strip, but I don't know if Groening invented it. it's from the series where he details what each grade is like, from the elementary school years.

No it's from Freaks and Geeks. I was just wondering whether she transcribed it from memory or not.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what it is - I think I'm remembering a friend telling me about it, which is why I remember it as a comedy routine.
