damn those alienated homosexuals

banrique (blueski), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, doesn't affect us mainland youths.

"UK adults 'among the grumpiest in Europe"

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

But that was the illustrative picture in the "if you're going to pass out drunk, at least wear nice knickers" article in the Metro last month!

Dear Cafes of London (kate), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

They wear their ASBOs as a badge of honour!

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's one of those UK characteristics that we're proud to be ashamed of: the worst football hooligans, the worst stag parties, the worst troops etc.

Actually, we're just ahead of the curve in the UK and others will catch up in time.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

Is the word 'youths' ever used to describe anything remotely wholesome or good? I mean, no one ever talks about "the youths in the Choir of Kings College Cambridge" do they?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

those kids are fucking terrifying. decked out in surpluses aged, what, TEN? what must the choirmasters do to them?

;-)

I mean, no one ever talks about "the youths in the Choir of Kings College Cambridge" do they?

Not in a wholesome way, certainly.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

That illustrative picture could hardly be any more overused if it had a crying eagle in the corner

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

matt dc OTM re negative connotation of 'youths'. such a strange thing for the word to come to be used in this way at all.

banrique (blueski), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ah but you forget:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

this is fucking ridiculous. two weeks ago it was "WHY ARE ADULTS SCARED OF TEH KIDS? teens are so misunderstood blah blah blah." now, er ... more pointless scaremongering designed to make daily-mail-reading wanks cross the road whenever they see a teenager, thus ensuring maximum alienation for the next generation.

"today" interviewed some "youths" in north lanarkshire this morning. they were quite sweet, even when they were talking about "goin' up the hill for a scrap, like". as they said: "we're teenagers. of course we can get rowdy. and adults used to do the same things."

i fucking hate grown-ups.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

"youthful exuberance" is slightly less negative as it's usually describing a forgiveable non-granny-mugging kind of twattishness, but that's about it

At no point in the whole badge of honour furore has any ASBO-shackled kid gone "yeah, I can't go anywhere, it's boss"

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with grimly 100%. More propaganda to encourage old biddies who rarely see any kind of disturbance to get behind budget increases for the police etc.

everything (everything), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

I think teens need to see more of real life - too much time spent in that bizzare microcosm of school with their "lads" - too much worrying over them - send them out into the cold harsh world! MAKE THEM SEE THE TERROR!

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

BRING BACK NATIONAL SERVICE

CANINGS FOR ALL

The teenage KP's at work are hilarious though, they see no link between doing a shit job and getting shouted at, it's all "huh? why is this happening?"

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

The news feature on this last night had an expert in what looked like a demob suit, with the obligatory poppy, which all added to the feeling of watching a Brass Eye type parody.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

I got bored reading about it (it was even on the front of the Guardian) but as far as I could see it was only a magistrate who said the 'badge of honour' thing. I like the SEE ALSO section on the side of that beeb story...

I agree with the last one actually. 1985 was one scary year.

Agreed, let's all laugh at Daily Mail readers, but isn't there some truth in this bit?

Dadaismus (Takin' Funk to Heaven in '77) (Dada), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

what was 'community life'?

benrique (Enrique), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

xpost

Well that depends on whether you actually agree that UK youths are the worst in Europe or are worse than they've been in the past? Neither of which assertion I think has been proved by this report.

Having said that, I also blame Thatcher.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

ILX yellowcards should be renamed ASBOs.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

At no point in the whole badge of honour furore has any ASBO-shackled kid gone "yeah, I can't go anywhere, it's boss"

Yeah, mostly they go "fuck an ASBO" and do whatever the fuck they like anyway. The only way an ASBO will shackle anyone is if it comes with actual shackles.

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

Actually giving a fuck about where you lived and who you lived amongst
