You got me all wet for nothing there. I suppose I was a fool to think Blair would finally release a statement apologising for everything at 3 AM.

My alternative title was "I AM A STUPID FUCKING TWUNT", ADMITS BLAIR

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

"I don't have a fucking clue, never have!", chortles Blair at increasingly apethetic elecorate.

In an interview broadcast today, Mr Blair urges scientists to "pick their battles" over important debates like MMR jabs and stem cell research, rather than side issues like homeopathy or even the teaching of creationism in some schools.

At this point, a civilised society burns him in a 20-foot wicker Thatcher.

In the middle of Trafalgar square! That'd draw the crowds.

Would everyone hate New Labour quite so much if not for Iraq? Blair was reasonably popular right up until then, correct?

milo z (mlp), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

Not amongst former Labour voters, no.

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

Iraq would be a side issue if I were to list the ways that Blair had shat on the Labour movement.

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, among old Fabians and the Labour left I'd expect him to be unpopular (like the DLC here). I mean among the general populace, the people who elected him and supported the shift in Labour, but now put the Tories back in the running.

Has Iraq completely negated whatever legacy Blair/New Labour might have had among their constituents?

milo z (mlp), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm... Certainly more popular than he is now. But here was still plenty of discontent over the fact that Labour had failed to live up to the (admitedly unrealistic) expectations placed on the first Socilaist government after 18 years of the Tories. And there were some issues on which they seemed to be positively laughing in the face of the party faithful - university tution fees spring to mind.

[NB: Generalising wildly] The important part of Blair's constituency was a relatively small group of middle class former non-Labour voters in marginal constituencies, thanks to the vagaries of the British Parliamentary electoral system. New Labour's victory relied upon votes from socialist Labour members who believed either that the party would be more radical once in power, or that holding power was more important than implementing socialist policies. A lot of those suckers still support the Blair government out of a misguided adherence to one of those two beliefs.

Iraq has probly pissed off both sections of New Labour's support, but not enough of either section, thanks to the vagaries of the blah blah blah.

Iraq was when my mum, a lifelong Labour voter, finally gave up her party membership, but she had been expressing misgivings a good few years before that point.

Jack Straw being a racist cunt was when I finally gave up my party membership.
