Plz 2 show me how to wear scarf

The weather finally turns to cold and bitter, and so two nights ago I went to the shops with the intention of buying a warm and pretty scarf, I enthusiastically barged my way through the Oxford Circus madness and into a shop, and laid my hand on a possibly suitable scarf.

As I picked it up, and walked in front of the mirror to try it out, a thought flashed through my head: erm. how the fuck do i wear this thing?

Do you just wrap it around your neck and let the bits hang out? I've seen people do some kind of knot thing which seems to work well with thick scarves which is the kind that I intend to buy.

Tips appreciated!

Best bet: grab scarf by the middle (length ways), and fold it in half accordingly. Wrap it around your neck (still flat until it hits yr skin) then hook the loose end through the loop now made.

dommy p is alright WHICH IS A LOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY ABOUT A LOT OF PEOPLE (Dom, Friday, 3 November 2006 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

If it's long enough, fold it in half, wrap around neck and thread the two loose ends through the loop bit in front of your throat. That way, it doesn't fall off. (The scarf that is, not yr throat)

there you go, perfectly clear.

i thought this would be a g-kit thread.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

Or you could put the centre of the scarf across your throat, throw one end of the scarf over each shoulder, swap them over at the back and have each end trail jauntily back down the front of your jacket.

I hadn't realised before how difficult it was to put scarf fashion into words. We definitely need pictures.

C J (C J), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

Loose ends though loop = the fulham knot! I prefer cravat style - start like tying a tie, one end of t'other and then up through the hole in the middle - then straighten/spread out that bit, button jacket over top, congrats on yr new ponce look.

according to this diagram, it goes around that part between yr body and yr head.

how do i wear summer scarf

wordy rappaport (EstieButtez1), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Fold it in half and pass it to a girl.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

If someone had told me when I was 13 that I could tie a tie without thinking about it but would still be bested by a scarf twenty years later...

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Friday, 3 November 2006 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

if it's a very long scarf, you can wrap it around your throat repeatedly, and then let the ends trail. but if it's windy and keeps coming off that way, button them into your coat.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 3 November 2006 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

Or secure it with a pretty brooch!

C J (C J), Friday, 3 November 2006 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

thanks guys!

OK the fulham loop: when you hook the loose ends through the loop, where in relation to your head/neck should the loop go? one side? in the middle? and how tightly should you do this?

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Friday, 3 November 2006 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

and how tightly should you do this?

It depends on whether you're into autoerotic asphyxiation or not.

C J (C J), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

The loose-ends-thru-loop method has an added benefit for knitters: you can make very long scarves, knitting on and on like a mental patient.

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Friday, 3 November 2006 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

I dislike that fold-it-over, end-through-loop thing. It looks fat and stuffy, and doesn't do nearly as much to warm you. Keep in simple and straightforward -- just wrap it around your neck with the ends trailing down the front.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 3 November 2006 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Nonsense.

Fold-it-over, end-through-loop is the warmest way.

However, this way only looks good if its portuding from a buttoned up coat or jacket. Otherwise, its the worst-looking way to wear a scarf.

researching ur life (grady), Saturday, 4 November 2006 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

Insanity. Dressing for warmth is all about layers, so wrap the scarf as many times as is practical around your neck, stuff the ends into the front of your jacket.

no TS: scarves v snoods? i don't think i've seen anyone in a snood since the early 90s. not that i look to check out what the scarf like neck protecting thing is on passers by.

Not counting the shirt, sweater, jacket, blahblahblah. Your trunk should be fine without scarf enhancement. You best proteck ya neck!

i love scarves. i was just shown the double up and loop through the hole thing for guys, i like it

does that make sense as a desciption?

Surmounter, Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

i think i'm wearing it correctly. it kept neck warm but feels weird

carne asada, Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

I will occasionally do the double-up loophole thing, but I'm still ... against it, somehow. It's very pat.

My scarf is extra long but if I don't wrap it around my neck in boa constrictor fashion its two ends stick out the bottom in weird saggy breast fashion.

ooh pashmina type things are fun

Surmounter, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

No, pashmina type things are a symptom of the existence of the Upper East Side. Shawls of a variety of types are fun.

Laurel, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

I like those scarves with pockets on each end, though nobody seems to care to take notice of this

o-ess, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

tbh i'm not even sure what a pashmina is exactly. ther are those like wide scarves they have downtown NYC, and then there are those thin shawl like things that are sooo silky on the neck. my aunt wears/used to wear those all the time. they're elegant and delicate.

what? pockets?

Surmounter, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Hey look, I was right! The UES can shrivel up and die.

Laurel, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

pashminas can be ok if you are not a douchebag.

i lost my scarf at bar last week :( :(

tehresa, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

oh no! losing scarves is bad cuz i get really attached to mine. i have so many too! for some reason i hardly ever lose them

o-ess, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

Surm, "pashmina" is really any textile made frm a certain kind of goat (basically it's a kind of cashmere), but since there was a giant vogue for the scarves/shawls, it has mostly become the name for those particular items. Quality varies WIDELY since there's no set standard and for a lot of people the concept of having a "pashmina" took precedence over anything else.

They are pretty indicative of a certain kind of NYC self-categorization, which is unfortunate, because a giant square of really warm material is super useful if you actually use it for something besides accessorization.

gabbneb, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

I lost a scarf my secretary got for me last weekend :(

gabbneb, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

i need one of those nine-footers knitted by someone with ocd. then I can double up a couple times, wrap around my neck a few times, toss over one shoulder all devil-may-care like the rake i am, anything i want. My current scarf knot options are limited by their sadly standard length.

kenan, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

u have a secretary?

thanks Laurel... i bought one of those cheap scarves in Soho once, this houndstooth print, and it's actually become a throw for my couch. works nicely as a warm bed for my kitty =)

Surmounter, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

my mom knitted me super long scarf but it's not wide enough u_u

tehresa, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

I used to buy men's scarves cos ladies' were too little to put over yr head properly. Now I just buy shawls.

Laurel, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

Well to be precise people have given me two shawls in about three years and I just keep wearing them.

Laurel, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

I love scarves. Here's why, check it out:

gabbneb, Thursday, 3 January 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

Like Laurel, I buy shawls more if possible. Standard men's scarves are too short.

Michael White, Thursday, 3 January 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

Aren't shawls a bit like blankets?

o-ess, Thursday, 3 January 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

how can this thread be completely free of passantino references?

electricsound, Thursday, 3 January 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

Please refer to babushka kitty upthread for my shawl-wearing preferences. Over the head, around the neck, pulled down over the eyes in snow/wind, etc. Something that just covers your head and shoulders would make a v small blanket, tho.

Laurel, Thursday, 3 January 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

From now on we should all just drop out of bed, wrap our comforters around our heads/bodies, and go like that -- maybe it could become a trend
