tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

Good heavens, terrible news...

I remember seeing the poster for 'The Unbelievable Truth' way back in 1988? - and being instantly smitten. That and 'Trust' are great, great films. I'm going to have get them both out on DVD now.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

oh my god. yeah totally out of nowhere.
she's absolutely *brilliant* in TRUST.

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Found hanged, apparently. Investigations still ongoing but it seems likely to have been suicide :-(

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Creepy. I'd seen her walking around Tribeca in recent times. RIP.

The Redd 47 Ronin (Ken L), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

all of what JtN said. RIP.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

god this is awful. trust was a huge fave of mine in hs, i always thought hartley needed her as much as she needed hartley, she definitely brought something to those films that his later ones don't quite have. anyone remember that spin cover w/ her and evan dando? that weirded me out so much at the time. rip ms. shelly.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

I liked her a great deal. She did a reading series I curated and was really, really funny. I just thought she was so, so sweet. There was always some sense of vulnerability about her and a feistiness that made her delightful to be around.

This is so f'ing awful. RIP, Adrienne.

Grey, Ian (IanBrooklyn), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

oh man the spin cover!

blount otm about hartley needing her

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

unbelievable

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

I cannot believe how many people have said they're going to watch 'Trust' this weekend. It's like everybody's first instinctual reaction on hearing this news.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

this is as good a reason as any to finally actually watch a hal hartley movie, i guess (if you're a schlub like me). RIP

joseph (joseph), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

AWFUL.

HUGE, HUGE TRUST/UN TRUTH FAN.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 4 November 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

Very sad. Fan of hers from the Hartley - days - esp. Trust. Any word from Hal on this?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

don't mean to sound callous, but this is going to be a L&O episode so fast

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

THAT. SUCKS.

BONERTIME! (ddb1), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

errr HOLY SHIT indeed

And slocki OTM about the future L&O episode

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

Just the stereotype construction workers didn't need.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 November 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

That is so horrific.

Beth S. (Ex Leon), Monday, 6 November 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus Christ.

I have no hesitation in citing the stereotype of talented and gifted people being killed by brain-dead barbarians. Send them all to fucking Iraq.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

This is even weirder than the Jack Nance thing. I loved her in Trust. RIP.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Adrienne actually did a L&O (like most NY based actors), she played a porn star linked to an insider trading scam.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, the poor construction workers! (Jesus, Ned.)

See, this is the kind of guy who should just be taken out back and have his skull crushed with a cinder block.

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

can we keep the fucking idiotic revenge fantasies off this thread

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

as long as we keep "oh no, now contstruction workers will be stereotyped" dribble off as well.

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

*rubs forehead* If you're dumb enough to assume that's what I meant by that line then that's your damn problem.

Everything about this situation is a classic example of humanity's endless capacity for horrible, destructive stupidity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

The reality about "humanity" is that the civilised have always been the minority. Venal barbarism rules, as it has always done. Sad but true.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

what the fuck. horrific.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

Shoot me if I'm turning into a Daily Mail columnist...I don't mean to sound like one, but this sort of stuff just depresses me beyond repair.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Venal barbarism does not rule. Sometimes it prevails.

There is a difference.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to think that the overnight results from America might prove that point. We shall see.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

Thank You All For Your Kindness and Support

As many of you now know, my wife, the beautiful, lovely, talented Adrienne Shelly, was brutally murdered in NYC on Nov 1. The events of the past 10 days have been tragic and devastating to me and my family, and it's been the outpouring of love and support from friends and family, and my friends and family in the Blogosphere, that's been a tremendous source of comfort. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your concern, kindness and, especially, your memories of Adrienne and how she and her work in film affected you and inspired you. I also want to congratulate you all for helping to change our great nation this week. It's the start of a new day, and now my family must begin anew as well. It will be a long, hard, painful process, but we will make it. And I promise you that the blog will back just as soon as I am ready and able to start writing again. My sincerest, heartfelt thanks to you. Keep up the fight.
Andy

Who?

Darramouss :D (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

dude, FFS. you've just been unbanned. learn one fucking lesson.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, what was the point of posting that? what possible reaction did you hope to stir up other than pissing off people who might genuinely be moved/upset/bummed out?

i'm not sure whether you're just a clumsy poster, a troll, a sociopath or an arsehole. either way, gonna sort it out?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

No I'm in the UK I've never heard of this person.

Darramouss :D (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

so? i'm in the UK too. i'm only very vaguely aware of her. however, i do have the basic capacity to appreciate that a) this is a fucked-up and unpleasant killing, and b) people are upset about it. so posting "who?" is a really fucking insensitive and pointless thing to do.

mind you, so is me bawling you out on this thread, so i'm going to stop :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

for future reference, here's a really handy link for you.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I sense the evil hand of Phil Collins is afoot here.

Darramouss :D (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, if you don't mind me asking, what *did* you mean?

I've seen Adrienne Shelly in three movies (Trust, The Unbelievable Truth and Factotum), but she somehow didn't really register on my radar at all. However, this just seems so pointless and wrong. RIP.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 November 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

eight months pass...

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,2126370,00.html

the film she had just been making is supposedly brilliant.

pisces, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

There's a deli on the corner of 8th Ave. near Bleecker St, just below 12th. The summer after I graduated from college I was there, and Adrienne Shelley was in line in front of me. She was buying a gigantic square piece of cake with white icing. I was so impressed to be in New York then.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

fourteen years pass...
