Alodovar's "Volver"

Really only his version of Mildred Pierce for the first 20 minutes, then veers off in unexpected tender, ghostly, wacky directions. Coulda been 15 minutes shorter and I was impatient with some of the lengthy conversation scenes, but a FAB vehicle for Penélope Cruz, who can't look working-class-oppressed anymore than Joan Crawford could. Lola Dueñas also super as her frowzy hairdressing sister. And he must've used the same sound effect for all the (female-to-female) kissing. *SQUAKKK*

fuckkk I wish I could spell early in the AM

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

I see your definition of early is the same as mine.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

yes, all of the AM

and there's a St Etienne song in the movie!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

So is that a rave, Morbs?

I objected to A.O. Scott's use of "luxuriant" in his review.

I liked it. It's sort of essence of Amoldovar: there are basically no men in it and the interest is solely in how women relate to each other. But this is a hard movie to talk about without giving away plot twists - I'll just say that there are some aspects of them that I didn't find terribly convincing (although I guess you don't go to Amoldovar for realism).

Hmmm... looks like I have spelling problems too

Revivalist (Revivalist), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Amoldovar was the creator of Kika and Flower of My Secret.

No, it's not a rave. I liked it (was sleepy tho).

Uhhh, Bad Education was male-centric -- was it lacking his essence?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Well, essence of one sort of Almodovar film - in any case throughout his career he's been way more interested in women and how women relate to each other than any other contemporary director I can think of.

Yeah, the basic plot was like something out of a TV movie starring Bonnie Bedelia. I guess the point was the lavish sensuousness of the whole thing though (not an approach I'm particularly a fan of, Almovodar generally leaves me a bit cold).

Sasha Frere-Jones with a funny take on Volver (BEWARE SPOILERS!!!)

Saw this yesterday and enjoyed it. Carmen Maura is just great.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

Heh, I thought things were going to go in the Sasha Frere-Jones direction and but then Penelope would've had to sing The Worst Pies in London or something.

re SF Jones, that is why I hear maybe two pop records a year.

wasn't one of the aims of the movie to emulate the TV soaps the characters were watching in it? i think this was very deliberate.

seven months pass...

saw this last night - it's weird how after watching an Almodovar movie I have the distinct feeling that I just watched a movie where nothing happens, even though that is usually demonstrably untrue. there's just some kind of fundamental LACK of drama/tension in everything I've seen of his.

has arlen specter never heard clarence thomas's laugh? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

agreeing with several of the posts upthread - definitely connected to soap operas and melodrama of the Crawford era. I really liked this movie.

xp i think one of his biggest motivations as a director is the tension in people's relationships, no matter what is happening.

penny is unreal in this

or the tension in a moment, as well. some ppl won't have the patience for this, certainly.

wow

The soundtrack to this is sublime. The end music that just booms in as it fades to the credits always blows me away.

yes. the one qualm i have with this movie is the dubbing for ms. cruz's performance of the title track. just a little off. it really bugs me because otherwise i don't think almodovar missed a stroke.

Re-watched this for the first time since 2006 with my dad a few nights ago; he loved it. Mom walked away, repulsed by how closely it mirrored her mom's relationship with her own mother, I suspect.
