i was thinking adults dressed as children and bukkae really offend me and i would not be adversed to them being banned , but i belive in freedom , so how do you process this ?

anthony, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bukkae? *trots off to dictionary corner at 10.18* A NEW RECORD!

Sarah, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not on dictionary.com?! Ah. You spelt it wrong. Thank you Googles spelling check telling me what this is. I think I choose NOT TO PROCESS IT AT ALL!! Ew!

Sarah, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm slightly not proud to know that I think the word Anthony meant to type was "bukkake".

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know anthony to be honest, but i think that its ok for things to be contradictory within yourself

gareth, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After googling, I can now declare bukkake = EWWWWW!

RickyT, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bukkake is porn where dozens of men spoo over lassies faces, which most women in my ken find distasteful when it's only one guy, but despite that (or perhaps because of that) persists as one of the most predictable and ubiquitous male fantasies. It's a bit upleasant I agree, but really, there are FAR WORSE THINGS to get worked up about. It's not physically harmful after all, and the models are getting paid for their pains. Hell, it's not rape, it's not children or dumb animals. It's just about humiliation. Which isn't nice, but then porn isn't renowned for being nice.

misterjones, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe there's a market for porn that is nice? Sweetcore - it could feature lots of cuddling and kittens and bunnies and stuff.

Emma, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it's just a gender thing either; Gay porn utilises the same imagery (see this weeks' Savage Love column on the onion for illustration).

As for dressing as children, I dunno about that either. There's a million miles between a guy getting his girlfriend to put on her old school uniform before fucking her and someone abusing a child. A million million miles. And if pornographers were forbidden to use that imagery, do you think child abuse/pornography would also cease? I don't. I think people who actually abuse children would be a more suitable target for your ire.

misterjones, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sweetcore sounds a bit too much like sweetcorn for my liking. ewwww...

misterjones, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it bothers me when it is gay. I liek spanking so i am being a total hypocrite , and the people fdressign as kids i dont know its mostly aesthic

anthony, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bukkake = NOT A PLEASANT CONCEPT FOR A FRIDAY MORNING.

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, you have scuppered your chances of being accepted as an English gent with that remark, for it is the afternoon in England right now.

Emma, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adults dressing young and the spilling of sperm in high places add to life's rich tapestry. The Cambria List, a voluntary code of practice adopted by the porn industry in the US, is designed solely to keep big corporate porn-distributors like hotel chains, IT&T and Yahoo onside. To which our only proper response should be 'Poor is the man whose pleasures depend upon the permission of IT&T'.

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as always, if yr consenting and willing, who does it harm?

goeff, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DAMN DAMN BLADDY DAMN. (God, I need a diction coach.)

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was thinking adults dressed as children and bukkae really offend me and i would not be adversed to them being banned , but i belive in freedom

Personally, I find most distasteful in American porn the following:

1. Fake blondes and nothing but.
2. Silicon implants.
3. White stilettos.
4. Ferraris and Hollywood pools.
5. 'Gurning' facial expressions, as if playing electric guitar.
6. Dialogue of any sort.
7. Jane Fonda workout video aesthetics.
8. Complete absence of imagination or mystery.
9. Complete failure to show the 'otherness' of sex.
10. Mafia control of distribution.

I would not be averse to these things being banned, but I believe in freedom.

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Fake blondes and nothing but"??? Momus, what porn are you looking at?

Dan Perry, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My cat just did a really smelly poo - I'm about to bukkake him. Not really. Just wanted to use that work.

Porn is a very personal thing. I dislike:
silicon breasts
big, blonde hair
open mouths (you know how they all look like they are about to permit fellatio or that they are gasping in awe of the massive size of some penetrating tool)
stilletoes
tans
heavy makeup
shaved pussies
anything featuring a male person

I like the school- girl thing though and I acknowledge that others may like some of the things that I don't like (such as men or silicon) so I think that it's okay for that stuff to be available for others. I just wish there was more porn that I like available. I hate the fact than porn users are treated like an almost homogenous group, only allowing for variation in hair colour and tit-size (huge or xx-huge) preferences.

toraneko, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, but if the sperm spills on life's rich tapestry do you suggest machine wash or dry clean only?

Another bad porn flick thing: how everything's covered in baby oil or the like. The penii in these films therefore look like very angry bratwurst.

suzy, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The problem lies in the fact that it's an industry -- and a very successful one. They have make-up artists with the tan cream and the lube in tubes, location contracts for those samey poolside villas, semi-pro actresses who spend their solid earnings on more silicon and tattoos, so little by little it just becomes this huge boring cliche.

They not only have the usual disincentive of all successful monopolies to innovate (people like it how it is, why should we?), they also have John Ashcroft waiting like some grey ghoul for the slightest opportunity to prosecute them for his own twisted Christian-Republican-Authoritarian reasons. It's no wonder that the 'fetish' category (Anal, Asian etc) is the fastest growing in porn, at 30% and rising.

Personally I don't consume any American porn, it's ugly beyond redemption, and the only thing uglier are the fascists trying to ban it.

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I never knew the plural of penis was penii. Thank you Susie for educating me.

Emma, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops, and sorry for mispelling your name, I am in another world today.

Emma, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Momus and Toraneko not only make me laugh but share my porn distates.

Samantha, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't imagine very many people posting here would like any of the porn forms Nick and Toraneko are citing as awful.

Personally, I've never liked porn because I've never really bought the line of argument that says the women allowing men to spunk on their faces on camera are well-paid businesswomen. Yes, they may be well- paid, but they are essentially being rewarded for accepting the male's dominant role, and they often spend their earnings on plastic surgery and silicon which is really another way of showing their compliance.

I'd never go so far as to do a Dworkin/Mackinnon and say that porn = rape but I would say that hetero porn = inequality. Fetish genres are not very different in this respect, and people who say 'oh, it's just play' are probably quite privileged or have never experienced inequality due to race, sex or class on a social or financial level.

suzy, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think porn is really overrated. I mean I realise this alienates me from most other 18 year old males on the planet in the worst possible way, but well it's all a bit dull isn't it.

And along with all the things mentioned above theres the fact that hardcore porn all too often ressembles a fuckin anatomy lesson. Theres nothing sexy about sticking a camera up someones pussy.

I dunno, my imagination can do much more for me than porn. (That probably makes me sound like some kind of serial rapist, but I wasn't expecting this disclosure to be easy.

Ronan, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You should check out this interview with <"http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/ frontline/shows/porn/interviews/ashe.html">Danni Ashe on the PBS website, Suzy. She may not be your kind of businesswoman, but she made 6.5 million dollars last year and is aiming to make 8m this year.

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

La Ashe

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, WHY must these statuesque, perverted ideals of womanhood wear ungodly types of high-heeled shoes while engaging in various types of internal watersports & other athletic feats?

I'm continually on the fence re: porn (usually because I find myself either totally against it, or totally for it - there's some middle ground somewhere), but the pro-white-male standard (in US porn anyway) is a bit stultifying (to say the least) and if this Cambria List is any indication, things are not going to get any better.

The Spice of Life this week is Salt.

David Raposa, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...she also claims to be a feminist, though you may be tempted to get into the mud ring with her over that definition.

I think what she says at the end of the interview about prohibition having exactly the opposite of the intended effect (ie creating rather than suppressing 'unhealthy' appetites) is spot on, and it's exactly the point I make in my song 'My Kindly Friend John Ashcroft': 'Oh my kindly friend John Ashcroft this cannot be what you mean / To distill the very essence of obscene'.

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Cambria List, eg 'No menstruation topics etc'

What is this, fuckin' Deuteronomy? Neuteronomy, more like!

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Nick, she's not selling anything you want, either. She's just another capitalist, yawn-o. Tell me, why do you think jobs like model and porn actress are the only areas women earn more than men as a rule? Do you think these women are getting ahead at the expense of other women (no flippancy about the stuff being bought by men, please)?

Women are still, on average, still making only 82 per cent of boy money when doing the same jobs. I think the porn boom we've had since the 70s is male angst about equality, visualised. And corrected by showing the male in a dominant fantasy position. Maybe female angst, too? Who says the women producing porn would be comfortable with things being more equal, since a few profit from that inequality too?

suzy, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'no black man/white woman themes'???

ethan, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh! Mud-fight! Mind, she'd probably try to do pay-per-view netcam to keep her subscribers in softcore heaven. Anyhoo, my definition of feminism doesn't include exploiting male, ahem, shortcomings either. Which is what a lot of male chauvinists (even the ones with good Humanities degrees, Mis-ter Cur-rie) fail to realise.

suzy, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'No peeing unless in a natural setting, e.g., field, roadside'

Is there something missing here?

Graham, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One fairly basic question about porn and its relation to male desires and insecurities etc:

The men in porn films tend to have enormous dicks. The enormousness of these dicks is generally a key point in the narrative - they are why the men are desirable. Statistically speaking very few of the men buying or consuming these films will have enormous dicks.

If modern porn is in part about fetishising gender inequality, or assuaging male inferiority complexes in the face of increased equality, then why is this still the norm? Given that a man watching porn and having a wank will have confirmation of his beta-male status (in the porn hierarchy) right there in his hand! Why do porn consumers indulge in a medium which is consistently hammering home ideas about *their* inferiority as well as women's inferiority?

Tom, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dumb suggestion:

man has smaller dick => man feels he will never be able to have sex with real women => man continues to buy porn

Graham, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a very good question, Tom. Big dick = capitalist values system and aspirations toward. That's why Mr Chipolata watches the adventures of Captain Kielbasa and reconciles himself to the way of the world.

suzy, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm thats one explanation - and after all it's quite easy and helpful to pin yr problems in life on something biological that you can't do anything about (unless all those spam e-mails are right!).

OR on the other hand it might be that the porn consumer is cannier than that and understands the porn-world as a fictive system in which certain codes and roles are assumed which bear no relation to real life - that consumers innately understand 'porn logic' in the same way as kids understand 'cartoon logic', but would no more apply porn logic to the real world any more than kids would expect to be able to run in thin air for half a minute after sprinting off a building.

It's probably a bit of both.

Tom, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The big dick in porn is a disembodied cypher, a 'universal penis' that can, like a totem, represent all penises, big or small. 'Go on, give her one with The Big Dick!' shouts the masturbating porn consumer, as indifferent to his own inadequacy as he is to his own ugliness when watching the face of Tom Cruise in his non-porn movie (he is often heard at the multiplex shouting 'Go on, Tom, give her The Handsome Face!')

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some men consume this kind of het porn so they can dream themselves to be that girl ahem confronting that turbo-dick: it is a way of being fairly gay w/o being in the slightest bit gay, if you see what i mean

momus after all omitted a specialist type from his it's-on-the-grow list: asian&anal&gay (FWIW mainstream gay male porn is even MORE unvariant and alienating in scenario and mise-en-scene)

mark s, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like to use phrases like mise-en-scene when discussing porn. :-)

Actually, I think I've said this in some other thread, but I don't like American (gay) porn at all either. The hegemony of body types is really boring. Where is the dirty dronerock boy porn??

Sean, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And what about the big-butt, big-belly sports fan who shouts, at the ice hockey match, 'Go on drive that puck home with your lithe, trim, little-butty body (you cute fucking faggot)!'

Momus, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem. There was a thread a couple months ago about soccer (ok, football), where all the male posters were going on and on about how so-and-so was so beatiful, and did you see how the sun hit his golden locks, he looks like a god, I'd like to give him a big hug, etc, etc. I kind of sat the whole thing out (mostly cuz I know nothing about football, American or otherwise), but was amazed at this apparantly sincere talk. I have no doubt that many men look at porn in a similar way; they're not renting it to look at the guys, but having them there does perform a useful function.

Sean, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, this all probably goes hand in hand with the 75% of usenet postings these days that claim "You can HAVE A 10 INCH COCK... IN WEEKS!"

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to mention, whenever I log on to ICQ these days, I get literally a message a minute from anonymous bots or what not either plugging their sexxxxy new web cam or penis pumps. It's the main reason I rarely log on to ICQ anymore.

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You forgot one thing on the list that you don't like and I would likr to add pumped up lips to that list UGGGG !

Gale, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This discussion would benefit from a distinction between porn as "the practice of the mainstream American pornography industry" and porn as "the graphic depiction of two people having sexual relations". The two things are of course very different.

Phil, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So, Momus does not dig American porn? What is your thing? Japanese fecal porn? Japanese grope on a subway porn?

sonny tremaine, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More interestingly, I should get my friend Dustin posting on this question. He published a paper about porn with all inherent cultural references.

sonny tremaine, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was thinking adults dressed as children and bukkae really offend me and i would not be adversed to them being banned , but i belive in freedom , so how do you process this ?

if you believe in freedom you have to deal with being offended.

hamish, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was thinking adults dressed as children and bukkae really offend me and i would not be adversed to them being banned , but i belive in freedom , so how do you process this ?

By banning pornography you are stopping any meaningful criticism of the porn and the society that has produced it. A society that allows the dissemination of ideas that we find abhorrent would be more democratic than one that tries to stifle them.

hamish, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh, I've been lurking, and now Ned's advised me to take the plunge. Actually, I feel I've jumped onto this thread rather late. I was going to reply to Anthony's question last night, but I thought it was too easy.

Anthony, do what I do: Avoid those bukkake vids and do not participate in bukkake events. How is this a conflict of freedoms? Unless there are bukkake events going on in plain view in public places. Is Canada really so swinging?

Same thing with adults dressing as children. Avoid the vids, theme parties, and roleplay dungeons where such proclivities are entertained.

I have so far neglected to mention that as Ned and Momus both know, I know more about bukkake, fetish porn, and porn in general than anyone really cares because in my previous career I was an editor at the bible of the American porn industry.

I'm not so much disgusted by porn as just plain bored and fatigued. Ennui is the worst thing about porn. Oh yeah, I also dislike the fake tits and the dominant aesthetics of American porn.

Everything I learned about porn I learned on the job and in academia. And so far, I think the latter is way sleazier.

So, er Momus, how come you know so much about American porn if it turns you off? ; p (I wrote some of my reviews under the pseudonym Nikki Currie when for tetchy political reasons I couldn't give an honest negative review under my more recognized nom de plume.)

Melinda Mess-Injure, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could we discuss the vagaries of early porn. 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's porn?

It is fascinating stuff. To go from, as Momus points out, the facial expressions as if one is playing guitar from black masks and normal - 'camera in a room sex'.........

Any thoughts?

or ama, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More specifically (and this is off topic) - what were the events that led to porn of that era culminating into the mainstream. I know it would be America's sexual awakening but did that not start with Hugh Hefner's Playboy in the 1950's?

And out of my own interest: is there any bios on the people that did the porn of those eras? As it included some very hot (haha!) issues of that time i.e. gay porn and interracial porn from the 1940's and 1950's.

or ama, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Melinda! So, er Momus, how come you know so much about American porn if it turns you off?

Partly because I had cable TV in the early 90s in the UK and could see butchered versions of American porn, all featuring a guy called John Leslie. They were ugly and repetitive and aesthetically repulsive. But I've also gleaned a lot of my cliches from documentaries about porn like the one on PBS the other night, or even from essays by, for instance, Martin Amis, who went in location to the Hollywood Hills and did a typically Amisian report mixing fascination and disgust, but mostly based in his delight at being able to hit the classic Amis vocab and tone of scalpel-sharp disdain.

For my own tastes in porn, check out alt.japanese.neojapan.sakura. It's ultra-soft, there's hardly even nudity and certainly no holes, poles or pumping, but the girls are fresh as a daisy and demurely pretty. In the end, for me, beauty wins out over obscenity. (Cue thread in which everyone nominates their favourite porn newsgroup. Come on, be brave!)
