I am liking him as the revenge-seeking Devil's-Island-escapee-in-drag in Tod Browning's The Devil Doll and I seem to recall enjoying him in other films, Grand Hotel, It's A Wonderful Life, and I can't remember what else. All I can tell from the archives is that Alfred hates him. Is it because he is able to see through the schtick?

one year passes...

He's fantastic in the otherwise kind of trifling You Can't Take it With You but that film has a dizzying age dissonance. Lionel Barrymore's 'sons-in-laws' and 'daughter' look like they could be his fathers and mother respectively, i assume it's a comment on something.
