It's supposed to be better for you than Green Tea so I just bought a bunch of tea bags and just had my first cup. The Clipper stuff is infused with a little blackcurrant to bring out the flavour and my, is it nice! Might have another.

You tried this yet?

Anyway, horrible.

What does white tea have to do with milk??

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Dear God, I was off to google to see if the use of white and black to mean with or without milk was an exclusively UK thing, and I just now discovered that white coffee is a type of tea! Mentalism!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_coffee

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

OK, that's messed up.

As far as I know, there are black, green, white, red (rooibos), and herbal varieties of tea.

The only time I put milk (and sugar) in my black tea was when I lived in the UK. I'm currently drinking a cup of decaf English breakfast tea, no milk.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

See I would classify that as black. Add milk, it's white. I am aware that there are also different varieties of tea labelled thusly, but I would also expect that the difference in which one I was talking about would be apparent in context.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

I love milky tea, and I love white tea. white tea is lovely and smooth unless you brew it too much, in which case it's vile. Also you can re-use tea bags. (I also like green tea and rooibos tea, but only if the rooibos tea has milk in it)

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

It's white tea because when dried the leaves are silvery

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Ailsa, I classify what I'm drinking as black as well. But not because it doesn't have milk, but because English Breakfast is a variety of black tea.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

So, to sum up, black tea can be black or white, while green tea is usually black and tea which is not green or black or white is tea which is not tea, right?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Nah,

Black tea, white tea and green tea are all tea are all tea but red tea isn't tea it is herbal tea, black tea can be white tea by adding milk but that isn't white tea, black tea is also fermented green tea and can sometimes be served black with a slice of lemon, green tea in unfermented black tea and ranges in colour from green to brown and all the way to black.

Is that clear?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

As clear as the day is oblong.

Is green tea usually drunk white in the UK, then?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

In the UK, most of the time we drink black tea, white with or without sugar

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I know that, but what when green tea is drunk etc?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, green tea is normally drunk green or indeed black (no milk)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

No milk in green tea, I put milk in it once when I wasn't paying attention and i didn't get as far as drinking it, it looked foul

Rooibos, is not tea in the strict sense that black green and white are, its a herbal tea.

And also YUCKY. I hate it. Or rather, I dislike it. Hate is such a strong word.

My mum used to laugh when my gran said she put lemon in her green tea. Then I had to explain that you can actually buy green tea + lemon in packages.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 9 November 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

I've recently got into drinking "fancy" black tea without milk, and it's a total revelation - no bitterness whatsoever. In fact I think I might have to have some second flush Darjeeling in a minute (n.b. I have no idea what "seconf flush" actually means).

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 9 November 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

An explanation of tea grades. Flush refers to which harvest the leaves were taken in a particular year, so second flush is second harvest, first harvest has the most tender leaves.

I'm a great fan of Ceylon Brunswick BOP which is a strong black tea that takes milk very well. Darjeelings are much lighter and are very nice milk free.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 November 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Brunswick Garangama BOP

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 November 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Assam also good without milk iirc. But as I only have about half a dozen cups of tea a year I'm no expert.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 9 November 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

Darjeeling is lovely without milk! I don't much like taking other black teas black, though, which is a problem because at the moment I seem to have become incapable of making a nice cup of tea with milk (i don't even understand how this is possible), but at least it means I'm working through my backlog of random teas bought on whim, plus lots & lots of oolong.

How does you pronounce 'ceylon'? I have this gut feeling that it's pronounced 'selon' (if u r posh like me) rather than 'say-lon' but little evidence to back this up.
