Footie Trivia Questions

I had to ask AQA last night if there had ever been a football game in which one of the keepers didn't get a touch of the ball.

There hasn't been, but Paul Robinson didn't have a save to make when England played Macedonia.

Now I want to know if a keeper has ever scored from a goal kick.

Any other vexing footie questions you'd like answered?

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Thursday, 9 November 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, loads of 'em. (note not all examples are goals scored direct from goal kicks, but there's a fair few anyway)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 November 2006 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

In fact, here's one from earlier this year.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 November 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

I have to ask... did Southend REALLY beat Man Utd, or did I dream it?

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yes they did. 1-0. I would've laffed, but I was too busy watching Celtic getting beat by Falkirk at the same time.

Here's one for ailsa:

Name the Celtic legend who had a loan spell at Rangers.

Alfie Conn?

I'm not really interested in football, but something I wouldn't mind knowing: which team had the best 100% record at the old Wembley Stadium? In other words, which team played the most matches there and won all of them?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

Is that a trick question?

(xpost to Onimo)

i take it you mean club team and not the England national team.

Yes. Although surely the England team must have lost some matches there at some point?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Name the Celtic legend who had a loan spell at Rangers.

Isn't this Kenny Dalglish, on a technicality? Had a scouting job of some description at Rangers (European Scout? I remember the jokes about him on golf courses in Spain)while he was actually employed by Newcastle?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

No, he was solely employed by Rangers, wasn't he?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Not a trick question. A Celtic legend who was loaned to Rangers late in his career (though as far as I know never played for the Rangers first team).

Not Alfie Conn.

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

Although surely the England team must have lost some matches there at some point?

of course, but their games to wins ratio would still be fairly high if too numerous to really compare with club teams.

Man Utd have 15 FA Cup final appearances at old Wembley and 10 wins there which is more than any other club but obv. that's only FA Cup finals.

2 american 4 u (blueski), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure, I just thought it sounded like the answer to a trivia question.

Wimbledon never lost a match played at Wembley.

But did they draw any? And how many did they play?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

xpost (blueski): isn't the question about undefeated teams? I've got no idea. I would have thought all the 'big' clubs that have won lots of FA Cups / League Cups have also lost several finals, so it's probably someone obsure with maybe one League Cup and one Sherpa Vans AutoGlass Pot to their name.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

The team I have in mind, incidentally, played 2 matches there and won both.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

Is it another country?

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

No. I was only wondering if there were any teams that had won more matches there without losing or drawing any.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

Swindon Town (OK, I googled a bit) have played 2, won 2

Wimbledon lost in the 1989 Charity Shield

Why were they playing in that?

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - there are varying and conflicting sources for the Tully story
(e.g. this Scotsman article states that he was at Rangers).

I'll go with the "old bloke in the pub who used to work in the Scott Lithgow's with my Dad" :)

The Celtic web site did state that he'd been loaned to them before Stirling but they seem to have removed all the old player profiles for some reason - only a shitty potted history remains saying "we won some stuff".

The wiki entry for Tully had him at Rangers until someone removed it as "unverifiable information" (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charlie_Tully&oldid=36956241http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charlie_Tully&oldid=36956241)

Eh seconded. You definitely can score from a goal kick.

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Look it up (NB a kick out of the keeper's hands isn't a goal kick)

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

I did.

LAW 16 – THE GOAL KICK
A goal kick is a method of restarting play.
A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick, but only against the
opposing team.
A goal kick is awarded when:
• the whole of the ball, having last touched a player of the attacking
team, passes over the goal line, either on the ground or in the air,
and a goal is not scored in accordance with Law 10
Procedure
• the ball is kicked from any point within the goal area by a player
of the defending team
• opponents remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in
play
• the kicker does not play the ball a second time until it has touched
another player
• the ball is in play when it is kicked directly beyond the penalty
area
Infringements/Sanctions
If the ball is not kicked directly into play beyond the penalty area:
• the kick is retaken
Goal kick taken by a player other than the goalkeeper
If, after the ball is in play, the kicker touches the ball a second time
(except with his hands) before it has touched another player:
• an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team, the kick to
be taken from the place where the infringement occurred
* (see page 3)

I hope you're not a referee.

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure that never used to be the case - you could score from a goalie's clearance but not a goal kick.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

A few weeks ago I saw a hilarious goal from a recent Argentinian league game. A defender cleared the ball, it hit the ref who inadvertedly kicked it straight to the feet of an attacking player who was one-on-one with the keeper in loads of space. He scored.

Anyone know what this game was? I want to try and track down a clip.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I saw that too. The keeper ran back to his line on the off-chance he could make a save rather than try to clear the ball. I'll see if I can find it.
