Lodge Kerrigan's film "Keane"

absolutely superb. wonderful acting from Damien Lewis and the best child performance i think i've ever seen from Abigail Breslin as the seven year old Kira. the wired, paranoid mood is wonderfully sustained: 75% of the film is a head and shoulders shot of Damien Lewis playing out the inner life of the character. only 2 or 3 scenes tip over into unbelievable.

Kerrigan very subtly sets up sitations where you expect the worst only to confound your expecations and let them play out relatively innocently. i don't want to go into too much detail here for anyone who hasn't seen the film but there could and will be assumptions made that instil a sense of dread in the viewer which kerrigan deftly turns around in a completely non manipulative way.

I saw this, jed. It was good but I don't think I liked it as much as you did.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 9 November 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

damien lewis played some character named "jonesy" in this terrible stephen king movie once and for some reason i have known him as such ever since.

It's proficient, but Kerrigan certainly pushes the first half-hour as hard as he can -- I've never seen a more insistent Begging for an Indie Spirit Award performance than Lewis's at the start. And ultimately it's as sentimental and cliched as a non-handheld white elephant Lost Child melodrama. I was two scenes ahead of most of the second half. Clean, Shaven better.

Also, I'm amazed at Soderbergh's clout at shooting THAT much in the Port Authority Bus Terminal, which I passed through most days of my life between 18 and 30. (I think even PA security would've gotten wise to Keane after a week or two.)

Slight derailment, but Damian Lewis was excellent on Have I Got News For You on Friday.

I would like to see Keane, but I appear to have missed the boat.

you guys heard about this, right?

"Between "Claire Dolan" and "Keane", he directed a feature film titled "In God's Hands", starring Peter Sarsgaard & Maggie Gyllenhall, and executive produced by Steven Soderbergh. Although fully wrapped, the film is never to be shown because of extensive negative damage."

horrible!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

my friend had a similar thing happen... only the lab actually THREW IT OUT.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

my bro-in-law was all set to work on that one too and then, yeah, it is horrible. it must take you a while to come back from something like that if you are a director. like a death in the family.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

the lab guy actually called my friend in TEARS. it's one of the only time anyone's heard of that happening... i think he settled for enough $$ to make his next movie, too!
