yeah i tried to take a picture already but my camera batteries were dead. STATUS: RECHARGING

ath (ath), Friday, 10 November 2006 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

Weird. I actually thought about starting a refrigerator picture thread for some reason, but my fridge was looking pretty ghetto and I never start threads, so I moved on with my life.

A Giant Mechanical Ant (The Giant Mechanical Ant), Friday, 10 November 2006 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

is that a giant jug of chocolate syrup?

Yeah, I bought two of them on a friend's Costo membership, THREE YEARS AGO.

Is it true that it's best to keep tomatoes out of the fridge?

derekerdman (Derek Erdmany), Friday, 10 November 2006 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

Weird. I actually thought about starting a refrigerator picture thread for some reason

double weird. I had the same thought when I was putting a jug of sangria in there a few hours ago (still on a sangria kick). just cause it looked all magazine-y with the sliced fruit floating around. i mean, the fridge looked hot.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 10 November 2006 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

the plastic bag contains several cups of yogurt (20 for $10 sale at ralph's). the bottle is bacardi añejo (aged mexican rum). the tea is in the fridge because i'm afraid of leaving food out (yeah, i should just put it in a sealed container).

Perfect description of a refrigerated tomato. For some reason, my girlfriend will never stop ruining my tomaters this way.

Scorpion Tea (Dick Butkus), Friday, 10 November 2006 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

Heck, my roomie keeps putting the BANANAS in the fridge - BLECH!

Scary, isn't it, rrobyn? But it's mostly an act - 1/2 of a shelf, one of the door compartments (the one with the mealworms and waxworms, etc) and a veggie crisper are all for the critters - gotta keep species diets separate and all that.

I know, it sucks so hard! I went there twice during their 3 day closeout sale. I've been getting by on the combination of Dominick's and the Belmont produce market.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Friday, 10 November 2006 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

(Ms. Laura's the one with two jars, not me!)

Yeah, but, um, you see ... that big jar just has a little left and you can't get to it 'cause then you end-up with all of the stale mayo on your knuckles (from where you've gripped the knife/spatula) so I went ahead and opened the new jar, hoping that the roomie wouldn't notice the new one and get stale mayo on his knuckles, while I use the fresh stuff. I'm devious that way.

Not that there's anything wrong with Jell-O. I just went through a phase when that was most of what I would/could eat. Don't ask.

The Cheerios are mine, and the extensive collection of teas, mostly herbal. Also most of the canned tomatoes, which I love to eat with pasta. I'm also guilty of the hot chocolate mix, the instant oatmeal and the orange juice in the freezer.

Otherwise, the buck stops otherwhere. :)

Hey Jude (Hey Jude), Monday, 13 November 2006 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

Mormons - On Storing food:
In 1832 the Lord told the Church about a yet future day before His triumphant Second Coming to the earth, "And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations." (D&C 87:6) Obviously, when these times come, there will be a universal breakdown in social order. In addition to this, the Lord has warned of distressing weather conditions; floods, hail storms destroying the crops of the earth, tornadoes and violent wind storms. Amazingly enough, there will be no rainbow the 12 months before the Savior returns to the earth. Yes, all of this seems quite impossible but yet the Lord has spoken it. People probably won’t be going to the store any more and if an item isn’t made by the family themselves or by the local community they won’t be able to get it. To prepare for these times the Church counsels it’s members to store a year’s supply of food, clothing, and where feasible, fuel.

I occasionally entertain the notion of not buying any new groceries except absolute essentials until I've worked my way through everything in the pantry, but we'd be eating things like barbecue sauce smoothies before too long, and, well, no thanks. I need to just donate a bunch of stuff to the local food pantry.

That Starbuck's liqueur is reeeeally good. (Or, possibly, looks a lot like what Jordan actually has in the fridge.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, that's exactly what it is. It goes well with the vanilla bean vodka in the freezer.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

And Coca-Cola! I know I've mentioned it a lot, but it's actually cheaper to fix up a Coke-and-Starbuck's than it is to buy a Coke Blak. Though it's less acceptable for breakfast, too.

I really dig that stuff. After going through a bottle of it, I picked up some Kahlua and was amazed at how syrupy-sweet it tasted in comparison.

The bright orange stuff in the container is the frozen pulp of a Hachiya persimmon. I was told they can be eaten like ice cream. I got about 20 pounds of them from a friend's tree and ate fresh or dried the rest.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

is that Harry and David's jam in the fridge, Nick?

As for persimmons, I love persimmon bread and pudding, but I've never tried them dried - do you eat them straight (like a dried apricot) or reconstitute them or ?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 09:00 (eighteen years ago)

Man, I'm so fucking jealous at people who have GIGANTIC fridges (like Teeny's which includes cute babyhead) and/or a pantry. But then I could never really manage to fill it. I would like to have millions of boxes/jars. But I just can't manage to do it even though I would love to have it. Doesn't make sense, I know...

It may be H&D, I think I acquired that through a gift basket deal. I don't normally buy H&D. And I couldn't tell you how it compares taste-wise with more common jams because I don't eat them very often.

As for the persimmons, I just eat them straight, like dried apricots or peaches. They are somewhat tougher than those, so it's usually a whole piece at once or rip a large piece in two before eating.

It is Harry and David preserves. Plum variety (I was at work for the previous answer so I couldn't check). I tried a bit just now and the sugar has crystallized some, but it still tastes fine. The jar behind it is some fig preserves that I made myself from some scrounged figs (neighbor of a friend).

(And I'm bummed thet nobody commented on the jack-o-lantern in my fridge.)

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

umm.. you have a work fridge that is FULL of beer? wow. i want that.

Because we forgot to get a fridge magnet from Vancouver?
if you are serious i can totally help you out with that.

i was always proud of my dorm room fridge. my staples were perogies, green onion, arugula, butter, capers, sour cream, and beer.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 07:41 (eighteen years ago)

there are 35 bottles of beer in that fridge. the norm is 10-15 but it was a busy week last week and extras were called in.

researching ur life (grady), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

Ah - I've warmed the H&D plum preserves and served them over lemon pound cake. As far as brands go, I've had reasonably good luck with their jams/jellies/preserves and they make some wonderful butters - not just apple and pear butter, but a killer pumpkin one and a delectible persimmon flavor, too. (I like the fruit butters on french toast.)

I'm not a big fan of figs - probably 'cause my mother loves them and every year she made fig jam and that's what I'd get on my pb&j when all I ever wanted was orange marmalade *sigh*.

I'll comment on the jack-o-lantern (actually meant to but then was distracted) - it's a rather interesting looking fellow - may I ask why he's being preserved for posterity?

Also, we just got a new fridge (in the kitchen behind our shop). I wished I had *pre-tested* it at the shop cause I'm not happy with the small freezer.
