someone explain, please?

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 12 November 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

explain what, anthony?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Sunday, 12 November 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

you need eyes to understand

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Who's backing the Neue Galerie to the tune of $114mn to buy the latest?

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 12 November 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

me

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

although i might steal it from ronald lauder, cause i think it's cool to steal from my boss

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

As long as you're putting it to good use.

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 12 November 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

the cafe in the neue gallery is great.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Sunday, 12 November 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

so is the selection of the bookstore

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

well, in the last 6 months, there have been 3 paintings sold, one for 135m, one for 114m, and one for 80m...

its like tehy have come from no where, i mean these are monet/van gogh numbers, and klimt has never really been that far into the canon...

also the work is kind of baffling to me, visually at least

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 12 November 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

they came from somewhere

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 12 November 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

the art market at that end makes no sense anyway. art nouveau is really big now and people like klimts alot because they're beautiful.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 12 November 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

could you explain what you mean by baffling?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe goths got a lotta $$$ all of a sudden? Are a lot of Waterhouse and Ryden paintings being sold simultaneously?

Abbott (Abbott), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

klimt has been securely in the canon for quite a while in every way except for insane prices at auction. most people buying art at that price may like the art, but they are just buying it as a financial and social investment.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

also, prior to these recent auctions, he was probably just as well known for his landscapes as for his figurative work.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

(hint: his landscapes are his crowning achievement)

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

also, you need to see either the originals or very high-quality reproductions or to be on lsd for his work to look right.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

prior to these recent auctions, he was probably just as well known for his landscapes as for his figurative work.

this is not true at all!!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

yes it is! at least in my education!

i actually think he beats van gogh at his own game with landscapes

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

they look really great but i've never seen one. EVERYONE knows his figurative work.

xpost, ok maybe i've seen that one.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

here is a painter with a decent sense of composition thank god

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

his figurative work is what gets sold in college bookstores. those are beautiful, though.

these are great!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

i really wish i could find a good jpeg of that one on its side but google turns up nothing good, oh well, go to the neue gallery, they have a good postcard of it

if anything, dude has been undervalued until now

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:33 (nineteen years ago)

poor quality but you hopefully get the idea:

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

now go to the neue after they install what are undoubtedly their recent purchases and see them in person! you will thank yourself!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

another reason for the high prices as of late is that ronald lauder is just now getting the gallery together, and since it's in the memory of his dead friend who co-founded it, he is sparing no expense

Oh, apparently, not yet released in UK or US.

his landscapes are not bad, but i dont know, i find the love baffling, i guess

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 12 November 2006 07:16 (nineteen years ago)

and if its lauder, well hes always had conserative taste.

(thinking about this, i like some of the vienna seciession stuff, and some of his landscapes remind me of swedish, or canadian examples, i like much better, esp jeh macdonald, and his nudes just seem pretty for their own sake, and oddly asexual, the least sexual nudes in art history, perhaps?)

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 12 November 2006 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

i think hopper gets that award

have you seen the hotel room nudes by hopper?
they might be lonely, and isolated, but they reek of ennui driven, modern fucking...

i dont know, id sooner have romaine brooks or egon schiele or beardsly or byrne jones or kokoshka or even moser then i would have klimt

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 12 November 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't know i liked klimt til i saw some of his sketches recently, i never realized how huge an influence he was on egon schiele (my fav painter ever). i'll definitely have to give him a second chance.

the sketch jbr just posted is incredibly beautiful!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 12 November 2006 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

his landscapes are his crowning achievement

I dunno about that. Any of his nude sketches/drawings are levels above his landscapes, IMHO.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Sunday, 12 November 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't know i liked klimt til i saw some of his sketches recently, i never realized how huge an influence he was on egon schiele (my fav painter ever).

From the little I know: Schiele used to go to Klimt's studio as a young lad and show him his drawings. Klimt, at one pint, said something like "You're better than me!" and took him under his wing.

I have a favorite postcard with Klimt looking at the camera holding a kitten under his long monkish artist's smock.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Sunday, 12 November 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

s/b "at one point". I've had one pint too many tonite.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Sunday, 12 November 2006 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

a sketch is a sketch, i don't really see the point of comparison with a painting, landscape or otherwise

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

i don't really see the point of klimt

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Sunday, 12 November 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't mean that i don't see the value in comparing his sketches and his painting, but rather that i don't understand how one would compare them. apples & oranges etc

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

and if you weren't just being snarky, okay. art doesn't really have a point.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

it doesn't?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Sunday, 12 November 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

"to get the artist laid" doesn't count i guess

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Sunday, 12 November 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

that's the point of life, not art

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 12 November 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

Funny story...I went to a Schiele/Klimt exhibition at MOMA after driving all night to deliver a car from Martha's Vineyard to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and then taking the commuter train to NYC. It was LIKE I was on LSD... That tripping feeling when you're sleep deprived plus overwhelmed by being in an entirely different environment from the one that you remember from the last time you woke up.
It was amazing.
It was like everything in the universe had aligned to put me in front of those works of art at that moment. As i said, it was like being on LSD.
Pinkmoose/anthony - by Moser do you mean Barry Moser? he lives around here (western Massachusetts), and gets exhibited in a few local galleries quite frequently - so I get to see his stuff a lot, and I love it. I like his bible a lot. gave it to my brother, who is finishing up divinity school this year.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Monday, 13 November 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

nope, im talking about koloman moser, an amazing poster/print artist, who worked with klimt and kolokcka(sp) and sciele and company, in vienna

info here

pinkmoose (jacklove), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

and whose work has almost zero relationship to klimt and schiele

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, i would rather have work by robert barry than gustav klimt but that doesn't mean anything

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'd rather have Adele on my wall than A-Rod on my team.

hosting my party, rather

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 13 November 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Well, Barry Moser has zilch to do with Klimt, but he's a great illustrator? I guess? he does very intricate pen and inks, and he illustrated the bible ...i think his work is worth checking out, for anyone who likes art....but, yikes, I think this thread is for critics, not fans!
Koloman Moser's work seems connected to Rennie - that aesthetic - and is very beautiful.IMHO. Of course. carry on.
